1st round CT recap
Bridgewater upsets Roanoke
Simon Harvey scored 20 points in leading Bridgewater to a 68-47 win over Roanoke. The Maroons were held to 1-12 shooting from beyond the arc and only managed 2 points over the final 8 minutes of the 1st half as Bridgewater pulled away in the middle of the game. The Eagles built a 27 point lead early in the 2nd half. Roanoke responded and cut the deficit to 14, but ran out of gas. Bridgewater advances to the quarterfinals to face Lynchburg.
Guilford blasts Randolph-Macon
Guilford assistant coach ulcardfan unleashed the hounds on the Randolph-Macon cruising to a 89-59 win. The Quakers shut down player of the year candidate Anthony Cannon holding him to just 6 points. They also got strong performances from their quadruplet of centers lead by Joshua Adams' 16 points and 12 rebounds off the bench and Kevin Haddix' 15 points and 11 rebounds. Guilford was lead by Irving Smith's 19 points and rolled to the win behind an 18-0 run and a 16-3 run both in the 1st half. The Quakers move on to face Washington & Lee in the quartersfinals.
Washington & Jefferson rolls to win over Emory & Henry
Larry Hatten scored 21 points and added 12 rebounds and 3 blocks to lead the Presidents to a 85-56 win over Emory & Henry. The Wasps' got a quality performance from Ralph Donlon providing 14 points and 12 boards, but its other leaders did not produce when needed. All-conference hopeful Michael Cardella struggled to a 3-10 from behind the arc and William Wellington was held scoreless going 0-8 from the field and was hampered by foul trouble. Fouls were a key in the game as Emory & Henry was whistled for 32 fouls compared to Washington & Jefferson's 9. Ccook19 keeps his hopes alive of fulfilling whunt's prediction/expectation of a W&J postseason and will face West regular season champ Bethany in the quarterfinals.
Virginia Wesleyan romps over Hampden-Sydney
Virginia Wesleyan advanced to the quarterfinals by pulling away from Hampden-Sydney for a 70-49 win. VW was lead by Shawn Burton's 19 points, 11 rebounds, 2 steals, and 2 blocks and got 4 key three-pointers from Tony Hinnenkamp off the bench to finally secure the win. The Marlins jumped out to an early 14-3 lead and saw it trimmed to 5 in the 1st half. VW built it back up only to see it cut back to 8 midway through the second half when Hinnenkamp began working his magic to seal the win. Virginia Wesleyan will face Eastern Mennonite in the next round.

Lynchburg advances but loses starting center
Player of the year candidate Derrick Hertel scored 24 points and added 15 rebounds to lead Lynchburg to a 98-75 win over Bridgewater, but the big story was the injury to starting Hornet center John Lee who partial tore his rotator cuff midway through the 2nd half. The loss could be devastating to Lynchburg's postseason hopes. Todd Nathanson played well off the bench scoring 6 points late in the 1st half to extend the Hornets lead that later was opened to 15 at the half. However, Bridgewater put up a good fight lead by Minh Chinn's 22 points cutting the lead to 1 midway through the 2nd half but Thomas Nichols heated up from deep and the Hornets sank their free throws down the stretch for the win. Lynchburg will face Washington & Lee in the semifinals.
Washington & Lee moves into lock status
Washington & Lee, perhaps angered by their "bubble" status, took Guilford behind the woodshed rolling to a 90-59 victory. Guilford got a very balanced, but unspectacular attack from its starting five. The Quakers kept it close early and managed to tie the game @ 19 on a Kevin Haddix jumper to complete an 8-0 run, but Alex Hoffman and Joseph Lee answered with back-to-back threes to re-establish the lead. The Generals never looked back as Edward Boyle scored 21 and Victor Burrier added 20 points to key the win. Washington & Lee moves on to face Lynchburg, a team they beat by 13 during the regular season, in the semifinals.
Bethany moves closer to first ever NT bid
Bethany, the team of destiny, continued on its course to the national tournament defeating a game Washington & Jefferson 87-84 last night. Neal Crockett scored 21 points and Dan Abbott added 16 points and 8 assists, but it was Sean McGavisk who came up with the game-winning bucket and late steal to seal the victory. Albert Ripley poured in 25 points and Larry Hatten continued his strong play with 13 points, 15 rebounds, and 3 blocks. Bethany answered a late 1st half charge by taking a 10 point lead early in the 2nd half, watched their lead trimmed to 2, then jumped back up by 15 on an Abbott three. The Presidents didn't quit fighting back to take the lead late in the game at 81-80 on a Ripley three. Crockett responded with a three of his own, but Ripley answered again with a three to lead 84-83. That's when McGavisk took over hitting a 15 footer with 23 seconds then got the big steal at the buzzer to keep Washington & Jefferson from getting a last second shot off. Bethany will face reigning CT champion Eastern Mennonite in the semis.
Eastern Mennonite dominates boards and Virginia Wesleyan
Craig Monzo scored 13 points, had 5 rebounds, and 4 assists, Donald Black added 12 points and 13 boards, and Michael Abney contributed 10 points, 9 boards, and 5 blocks to lead Eastern Mennonite into the semifinals beating Virginia Wesleyan 62-43. Defense was the name of the game as the Royals held the Marlins to just 13 rebounds and no players in double figures. Virginia Wesleyan was down just one at 5-4 after a Mickey Muller three-pointer, but Mennonite steadily pulled away to take a 39-18 halftime lead on an Abney lay in at the buzzer. Wesleyan found themselves down 29 before finally making a late run cutting it to 19 but time ran out. Eastern Mennonite will face Bethany in the semis as all the top seeds advanced.

Washington & Lee rides hot shooting Houston to title game
Lee Houston scored 24 points including 11 straight early in the second half to lead Washington & Lee to a 99-88 win over Lynchburg to advance to the title game to face Bethany. Victor Burrier chipped in 19 points and James Western added 11 points and 14 rebounds as the Generals seemed to be in complete control for much of the game. Lynchburg got 25 points and 10 boards from Derrick Hertel, 16 points from Thomas Nichols, and 16 points and 7 assists from Peter Hickey, but the trio also combined for 14 turnovers. James Puzinski contributed 7 points and 7 boards in place of the injured John Lee.
The first half was controlled by Washington & Lee as the Generals flirted with a double digit lead for much of the half. They finally broke the barrier on a 3 by Burrier followed by a steal and layup by Edward Boyle to go up 12, but Lynchburg responded cutting the lead to 1 at 41-40. Washington & Lee held a three point edge at the half. Nichols opened the second half with a big 3 to tie the game, but Houston responded with 11 unanswered points in 1:30. The Generals would roll from there, opening a 23 point lead midway through the 2nd half before Lynchburg made one last run. The Hornets scored 13 unanswered points to trim the deficit to 9 but could get no closer. Washington & Lee has not won the conference tournament in 10 seasons and will play a Bethany team that has not won it in its history.
Bethany secures bid and advances to championship game
Bethany is in unchartered territory. The Bison knocked off Eastern Mennonite to advance to face Washington & Lee in an all West ODAC final. Gary Willis lead the Bison with 21 points, 11 rebounds, 2 steals, and 3 blocks and came up big in the second half as star Dan Abbott struggled with foul trouble. Bethany had a very balanced attack from the rest of its starting five. Eastern Mennonite, lead by Craig Monzo's 17 points and Michael Abney's 13 points and 9 boards, seemed to be in good shape leading by 3 at the half. The teams battled early in the second half until Willis took over to extend Bethany's lead to 7 with 10:45 to play. Mennonite answered with a 10-0 run to take a 49-46 lead and upped it to 4 shortly thereafter. Bethany scratched its way back in it lead by Sean McGavisk's 4 straight points to go up 56-53 and Willis added two free throws to provide some cushion. The Bison did well converting their free throws late to hold on for the 63-58 win.

Season 23 CT Title Game
Bethany secures 1st NT bid with 1st CT title in double-overtime thriller
The Bethany Bison earned their first trip to the big dance by outlasting the Washington & Lee Generals 132-131 in double overtime. It was a game of attrition that saw 8 players foul out including 4 Washington & Lee starters. That would play a huge role in this game as free throw shooting made the difference.
The Bison got a Herculean effort from 1st team All-Conference performer Dan Abbott who was the unofficial MVP of the tournament. Abbott led all scorers with 38 points on 7-11 three-pointers and added 9 assists. He was aided by Philip Hartig's 23 points and 11 rebounds, Neal Crockett's 22 points, and Gary Willis' 20 points, 9 rebounds, and 5 blocks. Bethany survived losing starters Sean McGavisk and Crockett to foul trouble. Washington & Lee was led by Edward Boyle's 25 points and 10 boards, James Western's 24 points, and 13 boards, and the much-maligned Victor Burrier who had 19 points on just 4-14 three-pointers. Burrier would be remembered more for missed opportunities however as he converted only 3 of 11 free throws on the night.
The game was mostly controlled by the Generals who took an early lead and pulled away to a comfortable lead late in the first half and lead 56-44 at the half. The second half seemed to be much of the same as W&L extended the lead to 15 when the fouls started piling up. Abbott silenced the whistles with a big 3 to trim the lead to 8 and an Israel Stiles 3 cut it 5 with just under 14 minutes to play. W&L built the lead back to 11 on a Burrier three and continued pulling away as they found themselves up 17 with 8 minutes to play.
Then came the turning point. Victor Burrier was fouled while shooting a three with 7:27 to go and a 15 point lead. Burrier missed all three free throws. Bethany stirred. The Bison whittled the lead down to 10 when Abbott nailed a three and converted the free throw for the 4-point play, then trimmed the deficit to 2 with 1:20 on another Abbott bucket. James Western scored to go up 4 and W&L had the ball with under a minute to play in regulation. Burrier missed two free throws and Neal Crockett hit a big three to tie the game and send it to overtime.
After falling behind early in the 1st OT, Bethany took their first lead since 15:42 remained in the 1st half with 3:34 to go. The Generals answered the bell as Burrier came through with a three to send the game to a second OT. The teams traded buckets and free throws until Joseph Lee hit a three to put W&L up 3 with 2:04 to go in the game. Both teams struggled until David Battista hit 1-2 free throws to put the Generals up 4. Willis scored for Bethany to make it 129-127. Burrier hit 1-2 FTs and Robert Mark hit 1-2 free throws for a 4 point lead with 14 seconds . Abbott drained a three to cut it to 1. Mark was fouled and was unable to convert either shot from the charity stripe. A Philip Hartig layup with 3 seconds to go put Bethany up 1. Burrier missed on the desperation shot at the buzzer to end one of the best games in ODAC history.
Both teams move on to the national tournament where Bethany will face 11th seeded La Verne and Washington & Lee drew 9th seeded North Park.

1st round recaps
Lynchburg runs out of gas, falls to Franklin
9th seeded Lynchburg fought hard against Franklin but was not able to produce when it needed it most. Thomas Nichols lead the Hornets with 13 points, Derrick Hertel added 10 points and 10 rebounds, and Todd Nathanson chipped in 11 points and 7 boards in his first start. Franklin was lead by William Joseph's 18 points, Harold Kinley's 15 points, and player of the game Theodore Williams' 11 points and 13 rebounds.
Lynchburg fell behind early 9-1 and repeatedly battled back eventually settling in for a 28-27 halftime lead. The second half was a more even battle and neither team could pull away. Lynchburg finally got a cushion after Hertel hit two free throws, Nathanson hit 1-2 free throws, and a Hertel tip in lead to a 55-49 lead with 5:42 to go. Edward James came off the bench to hit a three and Williams got a tip in to trim the lead. After two Hertel free throws, Joseph hit a big three to tie the game at 57 with 4:37 to play. Lynchburg was not able to score again as Franklin scored the next 8 points to move on to the second round with a 65-57 victory.
Eastern Mennonite rolls to second round
Eastern Mennonite had very little trouble with Blackburn routing them 69-39. The Royals were lead by Craig Monzo's 16 points, Peter Sletten's 15 points, and Michael Abney's 11 points. Blackburn had no player to score in double figures and was lead by Michael Lozier who only managed 7 points.
The game was close early as Mennonite seemed in control but could not pull away until late in the first half. An 11-2 run to finish the half resulted in a 32-19 halftime lead. The second half was simply an extension of the way the first half ended as the Royals locked down Blackburn's scorers and steadily pulled away. The final score was also the largest lead of the day as the Royals won easily 69-39. Eastern Mennonite will face #2 seeded Bluffton of the Heartland conference in the next round.
Washington & Lee falls to North Park
Foul trouble again was the story for Washington & Lee as four starters again were repeatedly whistled and the Generals fell in the first round 92-85. Arthur Shick lead the victors with 22 points and George Cousar added 19 points and 17 points as North Park overcame 25 turnovers by dominating the boards and the foul column. Victor Burrier bounced back from a poor performance to lead the Generals with 17 points, James Woodson and James Western added 14 apiece. Once again, the Generals were scrambling at the end of the game as 4 starters fouled out.
Washington & Lee found themselves in a hole early down 9-2, but stormed back to go up 10-9. Things were looking up for the Generals as they pushed on to a 22-15 lead and were holding that lead until a 9-2 run by North Park at the end of the half lead to a 43-43 tie at halftime. The second seemed to pick where the middle of the first half off as the Generals got back up 51-47, but an 11-0 by North Park put them down 7. The teams battled back and forth until Curtis Bessler scored 4 straight to help W&L regain the lead with 9:24 to go. The teams fought hard and kept the game close as North Park was up 80-79 with 2:14 to play after two Lee Houston free throws. From there North Park pulled away using an 8-0 run to extend the lead to 88-79. W&L mustered two late threes but could not close the gap enough and fell 92-85.
Bethany advances to round of 32 in thriller
Bethany's dream season continues as they survived a furious comeback to beat a tough La Verne team 111-108. The Bison were lead by Dan Abbott's 28 points, Neal Crockett's 20 points and 7 assists, Sean McGavisk's 17 points, and Philip Hartig's 16 points, but the biggest contribution came from the bench as Phillip Blais added 11 including a huge three to provide the final tally. La Verne got great efforts from Tracy Kinzer, 25 points and 11 rebounds, Dean Grayson, 19 points, and DeWayne Halsey, 19 points, 12 rebounds, and 5 blocks off the bench.
Bethany controlled most of the first half and lead by 8 on two Abbott free throws then upped the lead to 12 on a Crockett three. La Verne answered to cut the lead to 8 at 62-54 at the half. The Bison continued to be in control in the second half and managed a 11 point lead with 9:56 to play when Grayson took over for La Verne trimming the deficit to 5 with 9:17 to go. Bethany was able to hold off La Verne until Ralph Miskell buried a three to cut the lead to 1 with 1:50 to play. John Leach hit a three to tie the game with just 21 seconds , but Phillip Blais came up big nailing a three with 2 ticks to provide the winning margin 111-108. Bethany moves on to face Ozarks in the round of 32.

Round of 32 recaps
Bethany ousted by Ozarks
Bethany's inaugural trip to the big dance was ended by 3rd seeded Ozarks 87-74. The Bison had a very balanced attack, but did not get the usual good shooting from long distance that had been the hallmark of their winning ways. Sean McGavisk lead Bethany with 13 points and 7 rebounds, Philip Hartig added 12 points and 9 rebounds, and backcourt duo Neal Crockett and Dan Abbott had 12 points each. Ozarks was lead by Russell Connor and Jeffrey Macek who each poured in 22 points and got 10 points and 10 assists from Gerald Rey.
When Ozarks needed a bucket it was Macek who provided the spark. Ozarks got two early threes from Macek to take a 10-6 lead that they maintained for most of the first half. Bethany battled back and finally broke through on Gary Willis' two free throws to take a 32-21 lead. However Macek answered with two late threes to provide a 45-37 margin at the end of the first half.
The second half was a continuation of the first as Ozarks maintained its lead, then Macek provided the spark again to make it larger by hitting two more threes back-to-back midway through the second half to go up comfortably 74-56. Bethany mustered a late comeback capped off by a Crockett three to trim the deficit to 11 with 1:07 to play, but it was too late as Ozarks finished off the Bison 87-74. The loss wraps up a successful run for seniors Dan Abbott, Gary Willis, and Sean McGavisk who introduced the postseason to the Bison program.
Second half collapse, free throw shooting dooms Eastern Mennonite
Eastern Mennonite looked good through 20 minutes against 2nd seeded Bluffton, but their free throw shooting failed them in the second half as Bluffton eliminated the Royals 62-58. Craig Monzo scored 18 points and Donald Black added 15 points and 9 rebounds in the losing effort. Bluffton was lead by Jason Hamilton's 14 points and Bob Pyne and Carlton Mullins added 13 points apiece. The difference in the game was seen at the charity stripe as Bluffton converted 16-19 free throws while Eastern Mennonite managed only 10-17.
Mennonite got off to a great start opening up an early 16-7 lead on a Donald Black lay up. The Royals built that lead to double digits late in the 1st half on Gerald Williams' bucket in the paint and went into the locker room feeling confident with a 36-27 lead.
Bluffton made a charge early in the second half that Mennonite was able to hold off until Hamilton scored to cut the lead to one with 12:22 to play. After Michael Abney hit 1 of 2 free throws, Mullins hit a jumper to tie the game at 43. After Black hit 1 of 2 free throws, backup center Mark Hammett hit a long jumper to put Bluffton in the lead with 8:21 to play. The theme of poor free throw shooting continued as Abney missed the front end of a one and one. The teams then traded buckets until the charity stripe proved costly again. Down 52-50, PG Jarrett Andrews missed the front end of a one and one. The Royal defense stiffened and they got another opportunity at the line, but Abney could only hit 1 of 2. Craig Monzo broke through hitting both of his free throws for a 53-52 lead with 3:08 to play, but Bluffton quickly responded and extended its lead to 58-53. Mennonite battled back cutting the deficit to two on a Monzo three with eight seconds , but it was not enough. Late free throws definitely made the difference as Bluffton hit 8 of 8 in the last 2:47 to hang on for a 62-58 victory.
