Page will be redshirting, and should be an outstanding player for Fordham after I'm gone. He will contribute next year, as well, off of the bench.

Chad Jones was the guy I was pointing out would make a good redshirt for just about any DI team. He is nice. Daniels was the other one. Army has pulled in a nice class for the Patriot League.

Richard Rains is the SF I wanted to redshirt. He's considering Northwestern and Pacific. Originally he was considering just Pacific.

Dial was a guy among a group of undecideds last year who I thought I'd see how many of them, out of ten, went JUCO. Just one.

I've got:

Might as well document this. Cyben has been nothing but a gentleman, unlike myself:

Message:Josh,

I'm an '04 grad myself. I went to a ton of football games freshman year...I remember coming in Lamont Jordan had a ton of hype but there was no supporting cast so he had a largely disappointing season. Getting Fridge was a huge boost for the program. He got people interested again.

I still have more than half my budget but I sure as hell don't want to put all my eggs in one basket. I'm actually surprised that I have these three considering me like this. If they all sign I'll have the stress free job of trying to find a redshirt candidate.

Apology accepted, you've got that recruit fair and youve done a hell of a job building that program...that's something I respect. Hopefully you can have a good season and move on to a better job...somewhere far away from the Army campus.

Ben,

I graduated in December of 2001 (one extra semester). I was living in Texas during the title run, had to watch Kansas games for the first two rounds, it was incredibly painful, but I knew we'd win it all that year. I did get to be present for Fridge's first season. I had been going to the football games before that but only for the experience. Suddenly I was excited about the actual games being played.

Looks like you've still got your three remaining recruits to yourself. You seem like a decent guy so I apologize for resorting to fighting dirty. Hopefully you can sew them up fine, but I should tell you that I think with my $30k and prestige advantage, the rest of your resources should go elsewhere for that last slot. The Final Four berth did a lot for me both in terms of funds and clout.

Josh

Two more quick things...Firstly, thank you for retracting those. THAT is good sportsmanship. Secondly...I noticed you're from Maryland and are a Terps fan. I graduated from College Park and was there when Dixon and Blake led them to the title. They we're a fun group to watch...and let me tell you, that was a great time to be on campus.

Message:Fair enough, and I certainly wouldn't expect you to drop out.

As far as scare tactics...my view on that is there is a right way and a wrong way to do it. In a situation like this I probably would start in on the other persons recruits...get them considering me. When he drops off my guys list, I'll let them go. Or I'll just pump in more money and knock him of a guys considering list...most people stop at that point. As far as asking others to do the dirty work for you...that is no longer a scare tactic in my opinion. To use a political reference...think of the cold war...no action was actually taken, it was all posturing and one upmanship...that is a scare tactic. Besides, if I stop recruiting this guy, what do you think will have made me stop...the forum post or the fact that you poured more effort in and knocked me off his list all together?

As for why I went for him...reaching high is part of what has made me a good recruiter. Usually I will make an initial push after the guys I have as prime targets. If they are considering someone else thats ok, often times that someone else finds a better target. One season in DIII there was a really nice juco guard...good speed/ath & bh/p. I offered a start and some minutes. He was considering me and 3 or 4 other schools. Suddenly a DII school swoops in. The other DIII schools drop out. DII school eventually signs someone else. I got a guy ready to step in at the point for around $500. I guess bottom line is...I'm not afraid to go hard after a guy even if I might not win. And in all my seasons, this will only be the second battle I've lost. Enjoy him though...his FT is very nice, to say the least.

Glad that we could discuss this civilly.

Ben

for the record, I'm not dropping out of the battle with him. I have two guys I'm committing everything towards because I targeted them from last season, and I like 'em as guys for my team needs.

This is the first time I've tried an open call for reinforcements, and I've never tried a closed call. I have tried to warn away a few people, and one guy who I had helped before I basically told if he kept it up it would be the nuclear option for me. That's documented in my Crum thread.

I've taken down any identifying information for you. Those are good recruits and you do seem to be a good coach. But there's nothing overtly wrong with a scare tactic now and then when respect alone doesn't keep people away from my targets. You may disagree, but like George W. Bush, I will not swear off of invoking the red button when I feel it's warranted.

Why did you not just look elsewhere after seeing I was on the guy, anyways? Whether you had him marked as "high" or not, you had to have some Plan B.

Josh

You know...I don't know whether I should be flattered or ******.

For what its worth, all the guys that I have/had considering me all started considering me in the same cycle of recruiting. Our mutual recruit is one of two guys I had listed as high when scouting potential recruits, so of course I was going to go after him...even though I figure to lose unless you drop out.

Would you mind taking down the post in your tracking thread in which you essentially recommend that people try to battle me? I had respect for you as one of the better coaches in Allen world, I'd hate to think it comes more through collusion/intimidation than gameplanning and shrewd recruiting. That too, more than anything, will get people to leave your recruits alone. Beat me fair and square for a recruit and you damn well better believe that I'll remember that.

I hope you don't take any of this the wrong way. I have no desire to argue and fight. We're both good coaches and recruiters; we should respect and treat each other as such.

That said...I do like a nice gentlemanly rivalry...up for a game against Army next season?
---------------------------------------------

I exaggerated slightly about my remaining funds. Let's call it "rounding up."

I also said "fair enough" and did what he asked right away before sending my second response, which is in this post.
8/16/2007 8:47 PM
I expect this to be a very good year, so I'm going to document it in detail. That means no boxscores for any game that I think I should win and then do win comfortably. Every other game I'll probably put up for posterity.
Oh, I should mention, whiteshadow gave up on HD...and everyone who's interacted with him smiled a little.
[edit: 9/11/2007:] I've been documenting every game. Maybe I'll eventually cut 'em out, but it feels nice to post the dominant wins.

Every year you complain about how this game is nothing but chance. Just quit already, because obviously you have no desire to learn anything, either from my mistakes, your own, or anyone else's.
God forbid you took on a challenge; Yale was one of the 10 worst teams when I took over.

As expected, you just exposed your true colors, counselor.

Survey Says: you're a jackass...
8/20/2007 12:07 AM
that excuse only lasts for the first four seasons or so, shadow. How about the challenges of publicly acknowledging your mistakes while consistently improving?
It wasn't exactly a cakewalk over here, either.

Granted, this was against two ranked teams, but both games were played at home and my perimeter defense was obviously terrible. The losses of Goines and Carroll don't really explain that, which is a drastic change from last year.

Looks like the same problem, except I packed it in against him on purpose. Rebounding and FT shooting carry us, as does getting fouled more often than we foul.
Why did Fanelli shoot so much? I turned his distribution down, not up.
