Can someone use another player's protected player if he qualifies in another position? If, for instance, Honus Wagner was not a wild card draft pick but rather protected by the Pirates SS owner, could I still use him in the OF?

Not the commissioner's answer, but I think the wild card is exclusive with respect to name + franchise. I'm pretty sure position is only relevant for automatic protection. ( For example, if you drafted Pitt outfield, Honus would be protected for the rest of that round only if he has at least 5 seasons as an OF)

I would expect the answer to be "yes, you can use him as an OF". This is related to the Lou Boudreau scenario shown in the rules. I have this situation with Frankie Frisch. I have the Giants 2B and the Giants 3B. Frisch qualifies at both positions, so I expect to be able to use one of his 2B qualifying seasons in one league and one of his 3B qualifying seasons in another. I believe the rules say I just can't use them on the same roster.

Is position irrelevant with wildcard players?

Question #1:
Let's assume I choose John Smoltz, Braves as my wildcard player. Do I get to use both his SP and RP seasons?

Question #2:
Both the Red Sox SP and Red Sox OF's have been selected. If somebody selects Babe Ruth, Red Sox as a wildcard, does he get to use both SP and OF versions of Babe Ruth? And if so, do both people (Red Sox SP and Red Sox OF lose the rights to Ruth)?
Great questions.

1) You need 5 qualifying seasons at a single position and must id the position and team. You could then use Smoltz how you see fit.

2) Same as above except only the team/position you id when drafting Ruth would lose his rights.
The answer to #2 above is also part of why expect you could use Wagner as an OF. It states that a wildcard (or, I assume, a protected player) is exclusive based on both team and position. This implies that he can be used as long as either the team or position does not match.

This is also why I took the Yankees 1B and protected Ruth as a Yankees 1B. He was already protected as a Yankees OF, but qualifies as a 1B in 10 separate seasons. Theoretically, someone could have taken him as a wildcard as a 1B for the Yankees.

If you acquired Wagner as a Pitt outfielder and he was not a WC, you should be able to use his of eligible seasons at any position you want, including ss. If he is a wc at ss you would still get to use his of eligible seasons and play him at ss if you choose. However, the guy who drafts Pitt ss wouldn't be able to use him at all.The only logical reason for specifying the position of a wild cards is to clarify which team loses the rights to him. It doesn't.mean that team can continue to use him at a secondary position. What a nightmare tryng to police this across 5 Leagues to be sure they are never used at their wild card position

if both Yankee of and first basemen had been chosen but neither player protected Ruth, then the person choosing Ruth as a wild card would determine which player lost their right to use him. The other player would keep their rights to him and use him where ever they want. In our draft, Ruth is not a wc, only protected as a Yankee outfielder, since Schwarze acquired him by drafting.a different position he should be able to use him where ever he wants. I know I plan to use Musial at 1b I if the need arises, even though he is also "protected" at that position by another player.

I am assuming once a player+ franchise is protected by anyone, he is off limits as a wild card pick, so it is not necessary for both teams who drafted him on a particular franchise to protect him. So Schwarze doesn't need to protect 1b Ruth, and I don't need to protect of Musial because they were protected by other players.

For example, I choose Chipper Jones as a Braves 3b, so by my understanding of the rules someone who drafts Braves ss would acquire the right to use him in any of his ss eligible seasons, but they could choose to play him at third base if they want to. But the team that drafts Braves 3b couldn't use him at all.

I'm not sure if that conclusion is correct. Also contained within the rules is this statement:
  • If a player has played multiple positions with multiple franchises, and you select both franchise positions he qualifies for, you may use that player at each of the positions he qualifies for, but not in the same season. For example, using Babe Ruth as a Yankees OF and a Red Sox SP is allowed in separate seasons. *However, for example, using Jimmie Foxx at Catcher and 1B for the A's in separate seasons is not allowed (unless chosen as Wildcard).
To me that implies that you couldn't use both 2B Frisch - Giants and 3B Frisch - Giants, but you could use Frisch twice if you had 2B Frisch - Cardinals and 3B Frisch - Giants.

If my understanding of the rules is incorrect, I'm screwed. Because I drafted Cardinals of with the expectation that I would be able to play Hornsby at
2 b, Musial at first, and Simmons at catcher, provided nobody stole them from me by making them their wc choice. The fact that those 3 players are protected by other players should only mean I don't get to choose them as my wild card. It shouldn't mean that I lose my right to play them at the position of my choice.

But I admit I'm kind of nervous as I await the commissioners ruling...
