Well, we managed 11-16 in one of the toughest conferences out there. Maybe this season we can get the winning record.

Roanoke Season 24 Recruiting Analysis
PG - Ernest Rudnick (Suwanee, GA) - Rudnick is a 5'10" true point guard out of Collins Hill HS in Suwanee, GA. He has pretty good ball handling skills and a good court awareness. He can generally find the open man and get the ball to him. He's not much of a scorer but can knock down an open jumper when needed or use his speed to drive to the basket. He has a good work ethic, which is important because he's going to be asked to learn a lot in a short time. Rudnick will compete for the starting job right away because returning senior Antonio James has threatened to transfer and that doesn't sit well with the coaching staff. [OFF-MOT / DEF-23Z}]
PF - Jerry Kline (Potomac, MD) - Kline is a 6'5" lanky forward out of Winston Churchill High in Potomac, MD. He's an outstanding shot blocker with some pretty good low post moves. He's also a strong rebounder who can bang the offensive boards to pick up some garbage points. Don't expect him to take his man to the hole or pull up for a jumper though. His lack of ball handling and passing skills pretty much limit him to post up moves. He can get burned sometimes on defense so he'll have to expect plenty of help from teammates in Roanoke's zone defense. With two more experienced players above him on the depth chart, he'll have plenty of time to better learn the offense and defense before he's expected to make major contributions. [OFF-MOT / DEF-23Z]
C - Donald Bacher (Floyd, VA) - Bacher is a 6'5" center out of Floyd County High in Floyd, VA. He has rebounding and low post skills rivaling almost any other DIII recruit in the country. He makes up for his lack of defensive fundamentals with a pretty good shot blocking technique. The Roanoke low post will be solid for the next few years with him anchoring it. Don't look for him to take his man outside too often; he's the classic back-to-the-basket player. He may start out behind incumbent center Jerry Barton this season, but don't expect him to stay behind for long. His talent is just too good to keep on the bench. [OFF-MOT / DEF-23Z]

Emory and Henry recruiting analysis
Well, it was interesting ... I'm definitely not used to getting stiff-armed by mediocre recruits. We're going to have to work on that C- prestige and in a few years be able to get some kids that can play with the big dogs. But considering the circumstances, this should be a solid first class.
PG - "Dandy" Randy Perry (Ottawa, Canada) - Perry's a nice all-around guard, and projects to be a three-year starter. Had probably the best def/sp combo of the guards who would actually talk to me, and his other categories were strong enough. I've given him two weeks to lose the Canadian accent, otherwise he'll be running suicides for every "eh" he mutters during practice.
SG - Terence "7-11" Brooks (Spartanburg, South Carolina) - Dangerous from the outside, Brooks never met a shot he didn't like. Defense is a little lower than I'd like ... but somebody's gotta score for E & H. Will form a fine backcourt with Perry for seasons to come. His profile picture looks like he has gray hair, so I'm a little worried that he may have used up his eligibility and be about 45 years old.
SG - Nelson "Yabby" Yablonski (Kersey, Colorado) - No sf's I liked would talk to E & H; Yablonski rebounds like a sf (and doesn't have the passing ability of a guard), so he is going to be our sf. Should bring nice sp/ath to the position, though he may get beat up on the boards for the first couple seasons. His 20 durability doesn't worry me, despite the fact that he's currently missing practice with a hang nail and pink eye.
C - "Fat" Albert Ayotte (Greenwood, South Carolina) - Ayotte was the first player to buy into our new "40 Minutes of Unpleasantness" defense, and he will be a force inside in a couple seasons. He's agreed to take a redshirt, and much of that year will be spent working on his 2.0 gpa and getting him up to a 10th grade reading level.
C - Robert "Never Nervous" Sturgis (Loveland, Colorado) - Big Rob will get significant minutes up front as a freshman. I usually don't sign many high we players, so I'm hoping a departure here might pay off. I'm also intrigued by a 6'8" center with 25 shot blocking ... word on the street is he actually jumps out of the way of opponents' shots to avoid getting a piece of them.

Lynchburg Recruiting Analysis Season 24
Assistant coach David Hodges hit the trail early and often for the Hornets and helped bring in a quality class that is literally short on defense. These guys will be on the rack getting daily stretches and drinking their "protein" shakes to beef up. I think I have a solid class, but there is one player out there that I might have preferred to wait on. [To be edited later with that player's name and destination]. EDIT {He didn't get on any rosters so I have a shot at him again so the name will have to be repressed for now.} That player....Herbert O'Bannion (PF) now suiting up for Guilford. I'm expecting very big things from him.
PG - Bryan Kelly (Valley HS, Sacramento, CA) - We were seeking a solid point guard to handle the ball, limit turnovers, knock down free throws, and maybe chip in the occasional double digit scoring night. In Kelly, we may have gotten a better scorer than anything else. He is lacking in speed which will hurt if he doesn't improve quickly since he isn't all that wonderful on the defensive side of the ball. In the zone though, his low D won't hurt, the low speed will. He will be running a lot during his freshman year. He will be slimmer than his 6'1" 178 lbs frame by the end of the year. Highly unlikely candidate for the redshirt especially since he is expecting to see 10 minutes of PT. My wise Asst Coach says, "avg defender, mediocre student, avg rebounder." Oh and he could be a DIII all-american.
SG - Ricky Matranga (Westminister Catawba Christian Academy, Rock Hill, SC) - We were looking for a solid perimeter threat as last season's SG was really targeted for the PG position and with two seniors leading this year's team, any recruit coming in will need to score and pull the defense away from the basket. With some work, Ricky will be that man. His biggest problem may also limit his ability to become the every day player down the road. He's a 30 watt bulb in a 120 watt socket and the switch is on dim. He barely qualified to play DIII ball. That will likely limit his improvement as he spends every waking hour running suicides for not being able to get the concept of a zone. He has his positives: good speed, athleticism, work ethic, ball handling, and passing. He is an adequate rebounder, FT shooter, and perimeter player. He lacks defense and durability (is that really a negative?). The 6'2" 202 lb SG could be looking at a redshirt season. The Sage David Hodges says, "avg defender, superior passer, needs work on contesting shots, great speed, below avg student in class and on court." Oh and he could be an All-American.
Paul Dever - (Pius X HS, Bangor, PA) - With only one small forward on the roster, this was a position I was looking to potentially fill if the right guy was out there. I like Dever, but I think the guy I want is still out there. Dever is a very good all-around player who is great on the boards which is key to this swing position. The beefiest of my recruits at 6'5" 215 lbs, Dever excels at rebounding and is good in the post, speed, athleticism, and work ethic categories. He is adequate/improvable at perimeter, ball handling, and passing so he won't hurt me too bad there. He severely lacks defense, but hopefully he can overcome that deficiency with speed and rebounding. The gift from the Magi, "Dever didn't start in the 4th quarter and still was cheering his teammates on." Sounds like a team player who might be willing to accept the redshirt to become a real stud by his senior year. More gems, "superior athlete, pretty good shape, great job at altering and blocking shots, superior ball handling, fantastic passer, and very hard to stop inside." Oh and he could be an All-American.
Christopher Godinez - (Grand Rapids HS, Grand Rapids, MN) - "Christ God" is not as religious as one would think, but apparently his coach thinks he has all the self-confidence that any kid his age would have. Thank you Philip Johnson. For our last recruit, we intended to find a big man for the future. Godinez looks to be solid all the way around other than his small stature. At 6'5" 208 he is undersized to say the least. We have faith in him. His biggest weaknesses are philosophy and religion, but he is a strong player in a number of categories. For a big man, he has good speed and athleticism. He is solid in rebounding, low post, shot blocking, and passing. He has adequate ball handling and perimeter for a center and has improvable defense so he won't have to hide behind other players. Unfortunately his work ethic is a little low and his durability is a little high. He will make his free throws, he is confident of it. My #1 prophet claims this kid has "an inconsistent outside shot, is an above average student, in pretty good shape, great speed, and an average ball handler." He was also considering Westminster (PA). Oh and he could be an All-American.
So that's four All-Americans in this recruiting class. That leaves one for the rest of you. Good luck finding him. He's the guy that will be listed above unless he decides to go DII/EDIT or Juco.

I'm tempted to include more teams in the postseason because I believe Virginia Wesleyan is close and the new coaches are definitely wildcards, but we've been putting too many schools in and haven't lived up to the hype. I'm trying to be more realistic this year.

East Mennonite Recruiting Analysis Season 24
PG - Steve Weber (Rockport-Fulton HS, Rockport, TX) - He made it known that he wanted to be part of the Royals. We were happy to add him to the squad, but think that he needs a bit of seasoning. He will mostly ride the pine this year behind starter Jarrett Andrews and backup Robert Shoup. While he learns how to run our offense, Steve will focus on improving his ball handling and passing skill. He needs to also improve his jumper, but we are excited to have him and expect him to be all conference by the time he graduates. Steve will redshirt this season.
PF - Glen Patterson (Westminster HS, Westminster, MD) - A late find that was not getting attention from the area DII programs, probably an overlooked gem. We believe he will be a star and can play small forward and power forward. The current plan is to redshirt Glen since he is behind a deep squad in the post. He needs to improve his post play and rebounding. After talking to his folks, Glen decided that a redshirt was not good for him. The coach was very disappointed in his decision and mumbled as he the room. . ."I guess Glen likes the bench."

Washington and Jefferson Recruiting Summary

The Staff put in long (and pretty effective hours) on the recruiting trail this off season, and I'm pretty pleased with the results. I would second dalter's observation that low prestige makes recruiting really tough...I spent a lot of time getting home visits refused and campus visit tickets sent back. And then there was the OFFER THE SCHOLLY debacle...but the Presidents are getting ready for the new season with 4 recruits on campus.

We came up with 2 priorities this offseason...we needed rebounds from our bigs and speed at the point. I decided to look for a SF or C to redshirt.

First off...PF James "Untie This" Knopf. My assistant describes Big Jim as a superior athlete who runs the court very well.
Unfortunately he's a lousy student, so I expect him to struggle to learn the off/def sets. He was a last minute signing to make up for the PF to whom I forgot to OFFER THE SCHOLLY. He'll major in arriving at class at the last minute.

Next, starting at the PF this season is
Steven "Sacre Bleu" Jeanlouis. This most patriotic Frenchman is a strong rebounding power forward who my assistant sees as being in pretty good shape and able to knock the outside shot down if open. Equipped with a reasonably high work ethic, he should contribute right away. His major will be remembering how good he was in high school.

The speed at the point was significantly upgraded with the signing of Charles "The Chef" Cook. With speed to burn, The Chef will begin the season frying up opponents as the first man off the bench. The coaching staff expects to place an order for him to start later in the season, based largely on his defensive ability. Notes from his scouting report included the fact that he works harder than most and is an above average rebounder. He'll major in the culinary arts, with a special emphasis in setting the table (for easy baskets!).

And finally taking a redshirt season is Wayne "It's Cold Outside, Put On Your" Choate. He'll be the starter at SF in season 25.

That's the season 24 recruiting wrap.
