some SIM enthusiasts dig playing the open leagues and finding the best possible cookie cutter combo team that can optimize performance given the parameters of the game.  others of us would prefer the challenge of theme leagues with different caps and strategies to make things less repetitive and hopefully more interesting.  to each his own.  fluctuating salaries might be an interesting way to make open leagues more variable and interesting, but they're certainly not a blanket solution to anything.
And then there are some of us who play in and enjoy both.  Fluctuating salaries would hurt theme leagues more than it would help open leagues.  That right there is enough to make me immediately stop playing should it ever happen.

On a similar and perhaps easier to implement note, they should put in a mechanism for doing an auction style league.  The way to do it would be to nominate players (let's forget about which season and just nominate players like you would do when drafting a theme league) in the order that you want to auction them off (alternatively, the commissioner can just come up with a list to start off with and then at the end of the process, anyone who still has a budget can nominate other guys), and then set times for each auction to end (in order) and allow people to set their maximum value for each player (which you can adjust right up until the end of the auction) - kinda like bidding on ebay.

It might not be ideal, but you could have a new player auctioned off every 10 minutes or something and you could easily get through 60 or so players a day (like I said, you could just set a bunch of the max values you'd want to bid ahead of time, maybe even setting some rules on your client-side about how many minutes of PG to draft if you still haven't drafted a C, or that kind of thing).

Seble is at the Greenwich B & G Club. He said the players will be in the system after LeBron announces where he is going.

Noble work you're doing, Seble. I'd say you're due for a raise.

ummm... some LONG-time wis-players are dropping out of LONG-time theme leagues/progressive leagues.  They're citing the delay of this release as the proverbial straw.

One guy has given us a deadline date.
He has two teams in our progressive league that's ran like 18 seasons.

This is going beyond annoying some people.

Just cruising by to see if anything has changed about the old site - sad to see it's not so

seems like old seble is well able to stir up plenty of animosity and contempt all on his own without any help from me

I have no idea how you guys could put up with this nonsense - the season ended in April - too sad to see such a great site fall apart like this

but I guess they have no one but themselves to blame

I've had some ticket requests to provide an update on the release.  As of now there really isn't anything new to tell you.  I'm still waiting to hear back from our outside stats guy to see if we can come up with a workable solution for position effectiveness.  It's proven to be much more difficult than expected.  That's the hold up right now.  If anything changes on that front I promise I will post it here.  Since tinmanpb left us we no longer have a full-time stat analyst to do this type of work, so it will take longer than it used to for things like this.

I hope there will still be guys to play with when the changes get made.

You could always do something kind of generic:

If their listed position is C, make them 100% at C & PF
If their listed position is PG, make them 100% at PG & SG

If it's SG and they're above 6'5", make them 100% at SG & SF.
If below, make them 100% SG & PG.

If it's a SF and they're above 6'8", make 'em 100% at SF & PF.
If they're below, 100% SG & SF.

If it's a PF and they're above 6'10", make them 100% at PF & C.
below, 100% at SF & PF.

Then make a couple of exceptions (probably less than 20 players) that play 3 or more positions.... Magic Johnson, Oscar Robertson, Lebron James, Michael Jordan (88-89 season), Rasheed Wallace, Kevin Garnett...

Bam.  Much more flexible PE.  Some players will ***** and moan about it, but there always will be those doing it.  A less exclusive player-set is much better than the current one, and it should be relatively easy to set the parameters.

Yes please please make a simplifying assumption as opposed to trying to rediscover gravity here.  I am as big a proponent of realistic position effectiveness as the next guy, but it just doesn't have to be that complicated.  Use ash's idea above and fix it later if your guy comes up with a better formula.

And if it's going to take that much longer to fix PE, let's have the 09-10 players using the existing criteria.

I agree with bkeyser.  While I've kvetched maybe more than anyone on this site recently about position effectiveness, in my book it could take a decent backseat to:

1) timely availability of the 09-10 player seasons
2) increasing the relative cost of offense (more efficiency than volume)
3) tweaking any defensive ratings that are clearly out of synch with reality

I'd hate to see position effectiveness continue as the sole holdup.

You know I bet some ppl here would do the work for free.  Results could be posted and discussed in a thread, and when all looks good, forwarded to WIS.  New players only of course.  Just an idea.  Any thoughts?

Totally inexcusable and unacceptable "service".  Get you sh!t together while there are still 24 (and not many more) guys who even care.  If this game is dead, then just be honest and tell us, so we can move on, instead of waiting for something that's never coming.

apparently WIS lost their full time Basketball SIM stat guy, who did the work to post new players and assign all the somewhat subjective WIS rankings/ratings before the new batch was released.  they're trying to get an "outside guy", which makes it pretty clear that they don't have the budget and/or executive support to hire a new internal guy to focus on basketball.  so we wait, until they get things sorted out with a contractor.  no real target date yet, since I'm guessing they don't even have a deal with the contractor to do the work - still figuring out exactly what the work is that needs to be done.

unfortunately for us, ever since FOX took over, the clowns have been running the circus

all3 makes a great point in the 09-10 + 50 greatest theme league thread - he thinks this is the end.

if they don't give us a new batch of players, how can we even pretend that there is a semblance of integrity in this SIM? i know we ***** about the game play all the time, but it is still enjoyable and makes us all think (especially clever theme leagues). there are flaws, but for the most part, the engine has remained relevant.

if we don't ever receive 09-10 players, the SIM becomes dated and certifiably useless. i pray that doesn't happen - WIS hoops is my favorite hobby.

the way things are looking, we might be SOL. which is just f-cking vile. throw us a ******* bone, site staff. lords knows we throw you enough cash. GIVE US OUR NEW PLAYERS!!!!!!

is this due to the lock out I keep hearing about being supposedly immanent as the new sim cba is negotiated?

just kidding, I'm new around here - is this kind of wait for new players after a season ends the norm? I checked the NHL sim forums and they didnt seem to have this issue
