So what is it that makes Altuve 'barely better than Donaldson'?

He gets a lot more hits, while making outs at the same rate and hitting for, essentially, just as much power.

He also adds more value on the bases and plays in a tougher home ballpark.

Donaldson is significantly better than Altuve. Altuve is a mediocre defensive player with no added value who is much less patient and much more lucky. WAR is deeply flawed and this is a good example. Hell, Dozier and Cano are better overall contributors. Altuve is having b a good year, but he isn't as good as those other players.

I just don't see the "significantly better" part. Altuve is hitting something like 344/406/553 and Donaldson is hitting something like 292/406/567.

Donaldson is better defensively but Altuve is better on the bases.

Altuve's added value on the bases trumps Donaldsons significantly better performance at 3B - a tougher position?
