We likely have one more season of mediocrity ahead, and then hopefully in Year 3 I'll have enough of my guys in to sniff the postseason.

Time winding down in the season, looks like 6 vying for a spot in the postseason.
NT: Guilford (RPI 7), Eastern Mennonite (8), Washington & Lee (22)
Bubble: Virginia Wesleyan (53)
PI: Bethany (87)
Out: Lynchburg (102)
Glimmer of hope: Washington & Jefferson (140)
So far I have not seen a team move up from the mid-100s to postseason status without winning the conference tournament. Still, I hold out hope for W&J to potentially make a run and get back in the hunt.

Lynchburg needs a win, but should still gain in RPI due to a tough opponent. W&J needs a win to stay alive, but will now need to long run in the CT. Bethany continues to benefit by not playing. VW may be hurt by the poor opponent RPI, but at least it is road game. W&L may need a win to solidify their chances and improve their seed. Mennonite and Guilford are now playing for the highest seed they can get and bragging rights.

W&J - I'm leaving you in there simply because you have a chance to face Guilford in the second round and either E.Mennonite or W&L in the semis which could boost your RPI enough.
Bethany - The 2nd off day hurt, but you landed in the right bracket to make a run although that 2nd round game may not help you much. Can't afford a loss early.
VaWesleyan - Got be feeling good about your spot except that dlwkmack seems to have gotten much stronger at the end of the year. A run to the final looks promising as you've got the best RPI on this side of the bracket. You may need it to gain the NT bid.
Lynchburg - Huge win over hoosier earns the bye and pushes the big dogs to the upper bracket. Sets up a potential rematch with VW. Looking solid now for the PI, but is eyeing a finals berth and a spot in the NT.
E.Mennonite, W&L, Guilford - already locked it up and now have a battle royale to survive to the final.

Maroons leave Eagles Red-faced
In the opening game of the ODAC tournament, the Roanoke Maroons led by Senior swingman Andrew Clark (16 points, 4 rebounds) and Junior guard Christopher Parikh (13 points), ousted Bridgewater, avenging their loss to the Eagles, who upset Roanoke in the first round of last season's tournament. Clark, a 3rd team performer last season, was coming off one of the worst games of the season in a loss to Virginia Wesleyan to close out the regular season. In that game, he was 2-11 from the field. In last night's game, Clark was an efficient 6-8, including 2-3 from 3 point range in leading Roanoke to the win. The Maroons held Bridgewater to 14 first half points and 36% shooting for the game, while forcing the Eagles into fourteen turnovers. Roanoke advances to play West division co-champion, Bethany in the quarterfinals.
Virginia Wesleyan 83, Hampden-Sydney 70
Marlins closer to landing a NT bid after win
Virginia Wesleyan raced out to an 11-point halftime lead behind Edwin Hebert's 15 first half points and knocked out Hampden-Sydney in the first round of ODAC conference tournament action for the second year in a row. The Marlins were led by Hebert, who finished with 23 points and 5 assists, and senior center, Shawn Burton who posted his sixth double double of the year (16 points, 10 rebounds). The Marlins saw their RPI move to 55, solidifying their bid for a NT bid. Although the Marlins are still a bubble team, a win over Lynchburg in the quarterfinals should drop their RPI even further and move them closer to realizing Coach bnys' post-season dreams. VW stands at 19-8 and are one win closer to their first 20-win season in 19 seasons. Hampden-Sydney (10-17, 4-12) got double figure efforts from four starters, led by Jeff Bruce's 14 points, 6 rebounds. The Tigers were haunted by a 10 turnover performance from PG Tim Oakman.
Eastern Mennonite 54, Randolph Macon 41
Royals swat feisty Yellow Jackets
Third seeded Eastern Mennonite (18-9, 10-6), a lock for the national tournament heading into the ODAC tournament, got 12 points and 8 rebounds from junior center Donald Black and 5 blocks from his front court mate, Michael Abney to send the Yellow Jackets packing. The Royals used a stifling defense to force the black and yellow clad Jackets into 15 turnovers while holding them to 38% shooting. In addition to a 35-23 rebounding edge, the Royals outscored Randolph-Macon 18-6 at the charity stripe. The Yellow Jackets end their season at 8-19 after a brutal schedule which was a top 25 SOS all year long, a task made more difficult with no senior leadership on the squad. R-M returns their entire squad next season and with only 2 seniors next season will still be one of the younger teams in the conference. Eastern Mennonite moves on to face West co-champion Washington & Lee in the quarterfinals.
Washington & Jefferson 61, Emory & Henry 51
Presidents march on during Election Month
In the third first round re-match of the night, Washington & Jefferson College (15-12, 7-9) held onto their slim post-season hopes with a huge second half rally to end Emory & Henry's season. Down 31-15 at the break after a dismal shooting half (38%), the Presidents responded to Coach jreitz's plea for better shot selection and outscored E&H by 26 to close out the game. Washington & Jefferson shot 69% from the field in the second half but didn't take lead for good until back-to-back jumpers from Charles Cook at the 5:50 & 5:18 marks. Cook's baskets were his first points of the game and he added two free throws in the waning minutes to finish his night with 6 points. The Presidents were led by Steven Jeanlouis' 14 points and 7 rebounds. Emory & Henry closed out their season at 9-18, 5-11 in conference play. Washington & Jefferson moves on to face #8 Guilford in the quarterfinals.

Maroons corral Bison
The ODAC quarterfinals kicked off with the biggest upset of the tournament as Roanoke, the sixth seed in the West, stormed back from a seven-point halftime deficit to upset top-seeded Bethany, who finished the regular season as co-champions in the West.
The Maroons, who won only four games in conference play prior to the conference tournament, used a balanced inside/out attack to lasso the Bison's bid for a second consecutive bid to the national tournament. Roanoke center Jerry Barton and guard Christopher Parikh each poured in thirteen points in the decisive second half as Roanoke overcame Bethany's 58% shooting percentage in the opening stanza. As good as they were in the second half, the Bison were just as bad in the second, shooting only 39% from the field including 22% from behind the arc after hitting five of six shots from downtown in the first half.
When Roanoke SF Richard Handel drained a three from the baseline at the 15:42 mark of the second half for his only points of the game, it marked the first time Roanoke had knotted the game since the score was tied at 18 with just under nine minuted remaining in the first half. Over the next eight minutes there were nine lead changes or ties, the last coming when Barton made the second of two free throws to put the Maroons ahead 53-52. Bethany had a chance to take the lead on the next possesion when the Bison's All-Everything big man, Phillip Hartig stepped to the line for a one-and-one situation and clanged the free throw off the front iron. Roanoke's Patrick Williams grabbed the rebound and the Maroons went on to pull away for a seven point victory.
Roanoke improved to 11-17 on the season and moved into the semifinals where they will meet cross-state rival Lynchburg, a 24-point victor over Virginia Wesleyan. The loss sends Bethany (17-11, 11-5) back home, lamenting the fact a bittersweet 1st place finish in the West likely won't be enough to even get the Bison into the PIT.
Eastern Mennonite 78, Washington & Lee 72
Royals fight off hard charging Generals for semifinal berth
In the most anticipated quarterfinal matchup in recent ODAC memory, the Eastern Mennonite Royals withstood a brutal physical assault by the Washington & Lee Generals to march on in their quest for a league record sixth conference tournament title.
The Generals, who posted a dramatic home win over the Royals on Curtis Bessler's layup with 1 second remaining during their regular season tilt, got no such magic this time around. Washington & Lee committed 27 fouls and were outscored by 21 points from the charity stripe as the Royals went 30-37 from the foul line. Eastern Mennonite missed three free throws in the final minute of the game but Washington & Lee was unable to capitalize.
The Royals were led by Michael Abney who finished with 18 points, 14 rebounds and 5 blocks. Joseph Lee paced Washington & Lee with 17 points, including 15 in the second half.
Eastern Mennonite (19-9, 10-6) moves on to face league champion Guilford in the semifinals. The Generals (17-10, 11-5) will wait and see where the WCAA selection committee sends them for their first round NT contest.
Guilford 68, Washington & Jefferson 54
Quakers strengthen their bid for a #2 seed
Eighth-ranked Guilford overcame a sluggish first half against the pesky Presidents, in which they swindled a 13-point lead with six minutes remaining to go into the break tied at 25.
The Quakers were led by James Warren and Louis Bailey with 12 points apiece. Warren also added 9 rebounds and 2 blocks. Washington & Jefferson also got 12 points from Steven Jeanlouis.
Royal Kraft, the Quakers' senior SF, went down to an ankle injury in the closing minutes of the game, and his return for the remainder of the season is now in question.
Guilford (22-5, 13-3) solidified their quest for a #2 seed when the NT begins in a few nights. Washington & Jefferson, under first year coach jreitz finishes its season at 15-13, 7-9. Rumors have swirled around Greensboro all season that long-time Quakers coach, colville would not return for what would be his 15th season in the Gate City. However, colville announced after the game that he had inked a one-year contract extension that will almost ensure he grabs his 300th victory at Guilford next season, as he currently stands only 14 victories shy of that elusive mark.
Lynchburg 67, Virginia Wesleyan 43
Hornets sting Marlins to move closer to a NT bid
Three nights ago the Lynchburg Hornets went to Hampton Roads to take on Virginia Wesleyan in an ESPN Bracket-Busters matchup and were hassled into a 34% shooting night. In last night's quarterfinal matchup it was the Marlins who were stung by dismal shooting as they finished the night 14-48 from the field (29%).
Lynchburg's collapsing zone surrendered only 3 trifectas for Virginia Wesleyan while the Hornets nailed 11 of 22 attempts from behind the arc, including a 9 for 16 performance in the first half when they raced to a 19-point lead.
The Hornets got double figure nights from Todd Nathanson, Terry Lambert and Michael Smith who each posted 13 points in the win. The Marlins (19-9, 10-6) got 8 points from John Jackson. Lynchburg, still clinging to national tournament hopes, saw their RPI lowered to 68, 5 spots behind Virginia Wesleyan, who now must wait and see if their 63 RPI will be enough to bag an at-large bid to the Big Dance. A win over Roanoke in tonights semifinal contest may not do anything for Lynchburg's bubble status, so Coach barretchap has instructed his troops that anything short of a tournament title is unacceptable.

Guilford 54 Eastern Mennonite 48
Quakers Churn Royals

In a battle of the titans of the ODAC, the Guilford Quakers stood tall in defeating the Royals of Eastern Mennonite 54-48 last night. In a game marked by solid defense by both teams, the Quakers leaned heavily on the inside tandem of James Warren (10 points, 10 rebounds) and Joshua Adams (6 points, 10 rebounds) to pull out the win. Guilford also got solid work in the backcourt by Frank Pilgrim (10 points, 6 assists) and Louis Bailey (9 points on 3-8 3pt shooting). Mennonite was lead by its own big man duo as Michael Abney and Donald Black combined for 26 points and 21 rebounds.

The first half was dominated by the Royals. They got an early 3 from Jarrett Andrews to go up 11-6 and held the lead for the half, even extending it to 6 on a Gerald Williams bucket. Unfortunately for the Royals the lead was trimmed to 4 before the half at 20-16.

The second half provided slightly more scoring punch. Guilford battled back into the lead 29-28 at the 13:08 mark on two free throws by backup center Nicholas Planas. The free throws were the result of Donald Black's 4th foul putting the star Royal center in trouble. However the Royals didn't quit. An Andrew Gholson three tied the game at 39 with 6:34 to go and Black hit 2 FTs to seem to retake control. A Steve Elliott three put them up 44-40, but Bailey responded with a three to tie it again at 45 at the 3:20 mark. Guilford took command on a Warren 3 point play the hard way and he followed that by crashing the boards to keep the play alive and was rewarded with a Curtis Gamble bucket to increase the lead to 51-48 with just 29 seconds . The Quakers converted on 3 of 4 FTs down the stretch to hold off Mennonite who will now have to await their seeding fate. The Quakers advance to the title game to face Lynchburg.

Lynchburg 58 Roanoke 40
Roanoke's run comes to an end against Lynchburg

Lynchburg advanced to the ODAC title game keeping its hopes for a NT bid alive and ended Roanoke's cinderella run. The Hornets were lead by Michael Smith (12 points, 5 assists), Robert Hinnenkamp (10 points on 3-6 shooting from 3), and Todd Nathanson (10 points, 9 rebounds). Roanoke provided the early fireworks, but could not keep the hot streak alive.

The first half began with Maroon stars Frank Kovach (14 points, 8 rebounds) and Christopher Parikh (10 points) leading the way to a 7-2 lead. Lynchburg answered quickly though with a Hinnenkamp 3 and a John Gregoire 2 to tie it. The lead then changed hands until Lynchburg finally took control of the game with a Hinnenkamp 3 plus a FT followed by a Nathanson tip in, and then a lay in to go up 23-18. After another Kovach bucket, Smith extended the lead with a lay in, 2 FTs, and a steal with an assist for James Puzinski's lay in to make it 29-22 at the half.

The second half was dominated early by the refs as the Maroons picked up 4 quick fouls including Kovach's 3rd. Roanoke was whistled for two more fouls to put Lynchburg in the bonus with 16:45 to play. The teams battled and Roanoke appeared to be in prime position to make a run after Kovach hit to cut it to 9 at 40-31 with Kovach at the line, but he missed both. To make matters worse, he picked up his 4th foul. Lynchburg drove the nail in the coffin with a 7-0 run to take a 47-31 lead and cruised to a 58-40 victory and a place in the title game opposite powerhouse Guilford. The Hornets continue to need a win to have any hope of making the big dance while Guilford is fighting for a possible #1 seed.
