Agreed..."******" isn't the right word...just kind of uninspired. Like everyone checked whatever edge or authentic voice they had at the door and just hammered out some songs. But I'm not the biggest Oberst fan to begin with, and I'm really hit and miss with M. Ward, too.
The group started like three years before they released the album, and they were collaborating in between somehow. I figured most of the songs would come across as a mash-up, so the fact it was somewhat fluid was a surprise. I also didn't expect anyone to use their best material on a gimmick album.

Oberst is someone I appreciate more in spite of the aesthetics of his songs. I'm not hopecorrupts, but I think his lyrics and volume of work are pretty impressive.

I think M. Ward has popularized himself somewhat which might not be the worst thing to ever happen to him. But I get the feeling he's spread pretty thin at the moment, anyway, and he wasn't really contributing all that much to the group.

Are you talking about the Chris Knox cover "Sign the Dotted Line"?

True fact.

That's a cover. I was hoping for lyrics similar to In the Aeroplane Over the Sea.

rlahann, want to cowrite a Mangum P.I. webseries where Jeff Mangum gave up Neutral Milk Hotel to become a detective? It'll be funny to exactly five people.

gin should have his wife come up with a mixtape playlist for his online friends.

I fully expect her to include "Box of Rain" in there somewhere.

You wrote it once...but that's not happening. Dude went insane and churned out the perfect album because he had some talented people around him who kept him just enough in check to let the genius get through. Best you could hope for would be On Avery Island.
