It hit me last night when I saw that Face had died at age 97. Elroy Face was one of the very first autographs I ever got. He was hired for a promotion by a new furniture store in downtown Pittsburgh between the 1959 and 1960 seasons. Of course, the upcoming 1960 season, which I will be using, led to a totally unexpected WS championship. Along with him were Dick Groat and Ron Kline and I can still vaguely remember the event. This was just before my 7th birthday. I went on to do a lot of autograph-collecting during that period.
