Topic of the day: Hawaii legislature has proposed a bill that would raise the age to buy cigarettes to 100. Is this government overreach? Why or why not?

cccp, you do realize that not being in favor of every thing Israel does is not necessarily the same thing as being anti-semitic, right? Israel has done some things I was not in favor of, but I am not anti-semitic.
Some sure but do you believe it is an evil and oppressive regime?
So just to clarify - if you do believe that the Israeli government is at least oppressive, would that make you anti-semitic? I'm not sure I'd say that, but I don't think it's an unreasonable response to the historical treatment of Palestinians under Israeli rule. Would acknowledging that fact make one anti-semitic? Does pointing out that the crusades were a wildly unnecessary waste of human life make one anti-Christian?
Because in the Middle East you have terror countries like KSA, Iran, Iraq, etc. who are the MOST oppressive and treat women worse than dirt, kill dogs and kill gays. The safest place for a Moslem woman to live in the ME is in Israel. So all this BDS crap is just a disguise for antisemitism. No one is proposing BDS vs. Turkey are they?

I AM dying on this hill. Happy to debate this ALL day.

Well, I'm a federal employee, so I can't overtly debate politics at work. And I don't disagree with you that condemning one bad government and not another is likely to be a cover for ulterior motives.

What I am saying is that somebody else being worse doesn't have to make Israel good. Again, I'm not even embracing a position on the Israeli government here. But this is the same logic as replying to criticisms of Trump's character or questionable actions by attacking Hillary and Obama, an extremely popular debate tactic of the far right in recent years. Ultimately, it doesn't matter if somebody else is worse. That doesn't excuse Israel, Trump, or anyone else to do whatever bad stuff they want as long as it's a least one level below their peers in the eye of some beholder.

I would not characterize the Israeli government as evil or oppressive. I can see why someone might. And that doesn't necessarily make them anti-semitic.

that's a stupid law in my opinion. Why not just make cigarettes illegal? But hey, if someone wants to give themselves a good chance of dying of cancer, it is not the government's job to stop them.
