ODAC Season 24 title game

Guilford 69 Lynchburg 65 (OT)
Guilford nabs #1 seed and relegates Lynchburg to the PI

Guilford continued its strong play without starting small forward Royal Kraft by holding off Lynchburg in overtime to grab its league tying 5th conference tournament title. With the win, Guilford also earned a #1 seed in the big dance. Meanwhile, Lynchburg saw its hopes of making the NT dashed and will try to make a long run in the PI to show the voters they made a mistake.

Guilford was lead by James Warren (21 points, 10 rebounds) and Joshua Adams (13 points, 10 rebounds, and 3 blocks) in the paint and Louis Bailey (15 points, 3-7 from 3) from beyond the arc. Lynchburg kept it close with strong performances from Robert Hinnenkamp (20 points, 5-10 3s) and Terry Lambert (13 points).

The first half saw Lynchburg jump out to the early lead at 9-3 on a Todd Nathanson putback. The Hornets extended the lead to 15-7 on a Hinnenkamp three and then a Nathanson bucket to go up 19-10 at 9:01 in the half. Hinnenkamp answered a short run by the Quakers that had trimmed the lead to 5 by hitting a 3 and completing the 4-point play to go back up by 9. Then Guilford took over. Kraft's replacement Curtis Gamble hit 1 of 2 free throws, Adams blocked a shot, Bailey hit a three, Lynchburg's John Gregoire turned it over, and Warren scored to cut it to 26-27. A steal by Warren lead to 2 FTs and Guilford had retaken the lead with 1:17 to play in the half. Lynchburg got a James Puzinski bucket, but it was answered by another Bailey three to go into the half up 31-29.

Despite squandering its lead, Lynchburg came out fighting in the 2nd half as a Lambert tip in followed by a Hinnenkamp 3 put the Hornets back up. Then Guilford's D took over and nearly put the game away. Gamble hit 2 FTs, Chuck Bitner picked off a pass, but Matthew Smith was called for a moving screen, then Nicholas Planas picked off a pass and converted, Frank Pilgrim got a steal, but it lead to nothing. Lynchburg had weathered the mini-storm. A Lambert three and a John Lee layup put the Hornets back in front at 42-41. Once again Bailey responded with a 3 to tie it at 4 with 7:51 to play. The lead changed hands many times before Guilford, down 2, got an Adams bucket to tie and a steal and bucket by Bailey to take the lead. Michael Smith knocked down a big basket to tie it with 55 seconds and held off the Quakers to send it to overtime tied 58 apiece.

The extra session began well for the Hornets. Lee won the tip and Lynchburg sandwiched a Warren basket with 2 threes to take a 4 point lead. Guilford seemed to struggle early in the overtime, but the Hornets could not take advantage. Adams got fouled and converted 1 of 2 free throws with 2:06 remaining to trim the lead to 3 at 64-61. Todd Nathanson, who played big all year, then made crucial mistakes down the stretch. First he took a very quick shot, 5 seconds into the offensive set, and missed. He got the rebound but had his putback blocked by Adams. A Gamble 3 tied it at 64 and Nathanson went to work this time getting stripped by Gamble who converted the layup to go up with 1:17 . Nathanson then had his shot blocked by Adams who then scored at the other end to go up by 4. The teams traded FTs down the stretch and Guilford escaped with the 69-65 overtime victory, ODAC crown, and a #1 seed.

Guilford will face Bates, winner of the NESCAC conference tournament and #16 seed. Lynchburg earned a #4 seed in the PI and will face #5 seed Finlandia of the MIAA.

Guilford 79 Bates 51
Guilford rolls into second round with easy win
Guilford advanced to the second round to face a very talented Adrian team by defeating the Bates Bobcats 79-51. Matthew Smith (13 points) and Joshua Adams (13 points, 9 rebounds, 4 blocks) lead 5 players in double figures as the Quakers overcame poor free throw shooting (57.1% on a 24-42 effort), but proved too much for the 16th seeded team from the NESCAC.
Bates struck first and held an early 6-2 lead, but Guilford got the big boys going using a 12-0 run midway through the first half to take a commanding 27-14 lead. The Quakers maintained that lead to the half as they lead 40-26 at the break.
The second half looked much like the first as Bates came out swinging. The Bobcats scored the first 5 points before falling flat as they only managed 2 points over the next 6 minutes. Guilford struggled over the same stretch and managed to hold an 11 point lead with 13:47 to play. Guilford had plenty of chances, but found more rim than net from the line and had difficulty putting Bates away leading 54-42 before finally finding their groove. The Quakers went on a 11-0 and 12-0 run down the stretch to finish off the Bobcats and advance.
Washington & Lee 99 Austin 84
Hot shooting Generals upset Kangaroos
Washington & Lee scored on their first 3 possessions en route to an early 16-6 lead and rode their offense to a 15 point victory over Austin. The Generals shot 50.8% from the field and 50% from deep for the game lead by Lee Houston (16 points on 4-7 3pt shooting), Alex Hoffman (15 points, 3 steals), and Curtis Bessler (14 points, 8 rebounds, 10-10 FT).
Houston knocked down a three midway through the first half to take a 29-13 lead and Hoffman later scored to make it 38-20 before Austin mounted about their only challenge. The Kangaroos trimmed the lead to 9 at both 5:23 and 3:03 in the first half, but W&L responded re-establishing its lead at 54-40 at the half.
The second half provided lots of scoring, but little excitement as Austin never was able to get back in the game. The Generals responded to nearly every basket scored by the Kangaroos after seeing their lead cut to 11 early in the second half. W&L extended the lead to 20 at one point and cruised to the win and a second round appearance.
Pittsburgh-Greensburg 66 Eastern Mennonite 47
Bobcats claw to victory over Royals
Former Bridgewater coach illinirock (alias xcal) resumed his dominance over the ODAC winning an ugly game over the Royals of Eastern Mennonite. Brian McDonal and Willie Duprey paced the winners with 11 points apiece and the Bobcats got 31 points from their bench, but it was the defense that stole the show in this low scoring affair. Pitt-Greensburg held Mennonite to 35.7% shooting and forced 27 turnovers despite only 6 steals to eliminate the #6 seed.
Tim Clontz set the tone early for the Royals by committing turnovers on their first two possessions and yet Mennonite still held a lead over the first 6 minutes. Greensburg then began to set the pace as Brandon Schild nailed a three followed by a David Manley steal and basket to take a 21-12 lead. The Bobcats held that advantage to the half leading 28-19 at the break.
The second half did not prove much better for Mennonite after an early bucket by Michael Abney cut the lead back to 9 at 17:32. Greensburg steadily pulled away from that point and Mennonite could not get anything going falling 66-47 ending a rather disappointing postseason after a solid regular season.

Lynchburg 81 Finlandia 61
Lions no match for hot Hornets
Lynchburg continued its strong play by easily defeating Finlandia 81-61. James Puzinski lead the charge with 17 points and 10 rebounds off the bench and Todd Nathanson added 16 points and 12 rebounds including 9 offensive boards as the Hornets were not seriously challenged by late in the first half.
The game started a little slowly for Lynchburg, but Todd Nathanson, who struggled in OT against Guilford in the title game, redeemed himself by jump-starting the offense scoring six straight points to take an early lead. Finlandia battled back to cut the lead to one at 13-12 before Lynchburg took command behind Puzinski and Terry Lambert sparking a 7-0 run for an eight point lead. The Hornets would extend that lead to 39-22 at the half.
The second half saw starting PF Brandon Longoria pick up two quick fouls to give him 4 and severely hamstring the gameplan of the Lions. The second was not close as the Hornets pushed the lead to 34 before settling in for an easy 20 point victory. Lynchburg moves on to face #1 seed New York City Tech in the second round.
Virginia Wesleyan 47 Alfred 41
Marlins defense keys victory over Saxons
Virginia Wesleyan leaned heavily on its defense to advance to the second round by holding Alfred to 28.9% shooting from the field as they won 47-41. Ivan Foulks poured in 16 points off the bench as the only Marlin in double figures in the low scoring game.
The game looked well in hand after an early 11-0 run lead to an 11-3 lead. The Marlins rode Foulks stellar bench play in the first half as he scored 11 of their 28 points as they lead 28-15 at the break.
The second half got off to a good start as Wesleyan opened a 15 point lead before a lid was placed on the hoop. The Saxons went on a 17-0 run from 14:04 to 6:21 to go from down 34-21 to up 38-34 and seemed to be on the verge of putting the Marlins out of the postseason. However, Wesleyan would not give up and fought back for the 47-41 win and a second round appearance.

Guilford 83 Adrian 68
Bailey's hot shooting helps Quakers reach sweet 16
Louis Bailey decided it was time for the perimeter players to take over a game by hitting 8-10 three-pointers and scoring 26 points to lead Guilford to a 83-68 victory over a very strong Adrian Bulldogs team. Centers James Warren (16 points, 8 boards) and Joshua Adams (10 points, team-high 12 rebounds) continued to provide strong post-play, but took a secondary role to Bailey. Michael Anderson lead the Bulldogs with 18 points who were hurt in transition by a 21-11 differential in points off turnovers.
Bailey opened the game with a three and Warren scored 6 straight to get the Quakers off to a strong start, but Adrian battled back to lead near the end of the half after being down by 7 and 8 in the 1st half. However Matthew Smith came off the bench to nail a three before the half to give Guilford a 40-38 edge at the break.
The Quakers got off to another quick start in the 2nd half as another Bailey three lead to a nine point lead. Adrian refused to go away though, tying the game at 57 on two Kevin Brown free throws with 7:15 to play. Bailey answered again with yet another three then added two more two minutes later to extend the lead to nine with 4:12 . This time the Quakers were able to pull away and hold onto the lead downing the Bulldogs and advancing to the sweet 16 to play Transylvania.
Wilmington 91 Washington & Lee 81
Quaker starting five too much for Generals
Wilmington held off upset-minded Washington & Lee as their starting five outscored the Generals' starters 84-50. Melvin Carter and Michael Galgano lead the Quakers with 19 points apiece and Michael Phares and Robert Lingle each chipped in 16 points to overcome a solid effort from the W&L bench which kept the game close. Lee Houston (16 points), Donald Allen (14 points), and Curtis Bessler (12 points) paced the Generals in the losing effort.
The game began well for W&L as they scored the first 7 points and lead 10-2 early. The Generals held the lead or were tied for the first 10 minutes of the game before it began to unravel. Wilmington's powerful starting five finished off the first half with a 15-4 run to take a 49-39 lead into the half.
The Generals put up a good fight in the second half cutting the lead down to five, but the Quakers found themselves at the foul line for much of the middle of the half hitting 20-25 FTs for the game to keep the Generals at bay. The Generals made one last run at Wilmington after finding themselves down 87-74 with 3:10 to play. W&L scored the next seven points to trim to deficit to six with 1:08 , but Wilmington was able to answer the run and put the Generals away.

Season 24 Postseason Invitational Tournament 2nd Round
Lynchburg 89 New York City Tech 50
Hornets power into quarterfinals of PIT
Lynchburg proved too much for #1 seed New York City Tech as the Hornets romped to a 39 point victory over the Yellow Jackets. The Hornets got a very balanced effort lead by Michael Smith's 14 points. Todd Nathanson struggled for much of the game shooting 5-17 from the field, but ended the night with 12 points and 10 rebounds, John Lee chipped in 11 points and 10 board, and James Puzinski added 11 points and 11 boards off the bench in the win. Joshua McTiernan lead the Yellow Jackets with 10 points as Lynchburg's defense held NYCCT to 29.5% shooting from the field.
NYCCT drew first blood on a John Parker three, but that would prove to be his only contribution as he was held to 1-10 shooting from beyond the arc. Lynchburg quickly responded with a 12-0 run to take control of the game. The score went back and forth until a 19-12 lead became a 34-15 advantage on 3 three-pointers by Michael Smith, 1 by Robert Hinnenkamp, and 1 by Terry Lambert. Lynchburg cruised to a 44-31 lead at the half.
The second half was the Lynchburg Hornet show. After two free throws by Joshua McTiernan, to complete his output for the night, cut the lead to 48-33, Lynchburg went on a tear. The Hornets dominated the next nine and a half minutes with a 24-3 run to effectively end the game with still 8:49 to play. The starters got to rest as Lynchburg rolled to a 89-50 win and a spot in the quarterfinals against Aurora.
Virginia Wesleyan 83 Hiram 81
Marlins survive against #1 seed Hiram to reach quarterfinals
Virginia Wesleyan leaned heavily on their big men to outshine the perimeter play of Hiram to narrowly advance with a 83-81 win. Shawn Burton and Edwin Hebert lead the Marlins with 15 points each, Burton added 10 rebounds, and James Scrivner contributed 13 points as Wesleyan shot 60.9% from the field. Hiram got excellent effort out of its backcourt as Richard Dominick poured in 28 points and Quentin Markland added 21 points, but a 47-19 advantage in the paint helped the Marlins to the win.
Virginia Wesleyan got off to a hot start with a 7-0 lead only to watch the Terriers scrap back to tie it at 17. The Marlins then went on a 14-5 run to take control of the 1st half and eventually hold a 54-47 edge at the half. Wesleyan answered every run the Terriers could muster with a balanced attack as all 5 starters scored between 7 and 9 points in the opening frame.
The second half started well for the Marlins as Burton and Hebert scored to go up 12 quickly. Then the fouls started piling up. Wesleyan picked up 4 fouls within a minute. The seventh foul came at 10:53 and lead to a three-point play for Markland to make it 66-58. Hiram slowly whittled the deficit down to four points before Dominick took over hitting a basket, getting a steal and a lay up, and another steal. However the Terriers could not convert and that the game tied with 1:09 to play. Burton answered for the Marlins with a bucket and then converted 1-2 free throws for a 3 point edge with 23 seconds . After two Dominick free throws, Scrivner hit 1-2 free throws with 13 seconds and came up with a huge rebound of a Markland miss to seal the win. Hiram converted 29 Wesleyan fouls into 30-40 free throws to keep the game close. Wesleyan moves on to face #2 seed D'Youville in the quarterfinals.

Transylvania 52 Guilford 46
Pioneers' late surge eliminates Quakers
Alan Patten was quiet most of the game, but came alive when it mattered most scoring nine points in the last 2:36 to lead Transylvania to an upset of #1 seed Guilford. Patten finished with 11 points for the game and was aided by player of the game Oliver Haugh's 9 points and 5 assists. Transylvania also was aided by a 24-15 edge in rebounds and 12-3 edge in offensive rebounds. Guilford got a solid effort off the bench from Nicholas Planas with 12 points and James Warren added 10 points in the losing effort.
The game started well for Transylvania as Alfred Kyle opened with two threes for the early advantage. Planas got Guilford going and the Quakers tied it at 15 on Joshua Adams' steal and lay up. Later in the first half, Planas capped a 7-0 run for Guilford with a tip in to take a 22-19 lead, but the Quakers were held scoreless for the last 2:41. Still, they took a one point lead into the half at 22-21.
Defense dominated the first six minutes of the second half until the teams traded baskets leaving Guilford up 30-20 on Curtis Gamble's bank shot. Planas converted to increase the lead to three, but Guilford could not convert its chances as they made just 2-4 from the line. Transylvania missed two free throws and things look promising, but again the Quakers could not capitalize on the opportunity. A Robert Rymer tap in tied it. Planas and Warren scored to regain the lead, but another Kyle three tied it again at 411 with 3:44 to play. Once again Planas answered the call and scored and Adams got a steal and was fouled. Unfortunately he only converted 1-2 free throws and Louis Bailey, who struggled all night, missed both of his chances to keep the Quaker lead at 46-45 with 1:04 . Patten then hit a three for Transylvania's first lead since the 12:20 mark. The Pioneers would go on to convert 4-4 free throws including two more by Patten to complete the comeback for a six point win.

Lynchburg 71 Aurora 59
Hornets continue run by knocking off #2 seeded Spartans
Lynchburg advanced to the semifinals using strong free throw shooting and more good defense for a win over Aurora. Terry Lambert lead the Hornets with 16 points, Michael Smith added 14 points, and Todd Nathanson scored 9 points and pulled down 13 rebounds and the team converted 22-26 free throws en route to the win. Aurora got balanced effort as 3 players scored 10 points each to lead them.
The first half saw Aurora go on an early 7-0 run to take a 7-4 lead and seemed to be in control after taking an 18-12 lead. That advantage was reduced to one on Todd Nathanson's two free throws. Aurora built it back up to five before Lynchburg finally took over. John Lee's two free throws followed by Smith's steal and lay up cut it to one. Then Smith converted two free throws to regain the lead at 10:33 as part of 9 straight possessions with a score. Lynchburg went on to lead at the half 46-39.
The second half saw the Hornets quickly build their advantage to 11 on a Lambert three. From there, Lynchburg never let Aurora back in the game keeping at least a double-digit lead and extending it to 18 at one point as they held on for a 71-59 victory. Lynchburg moves on to face West bracket champion and conference foe Virginia Wesleyan in the semifinals.
Virginia Wesleyan 60 D'Youville 59
Marlins' furious comeback leads to semifinal appearance
Virginia Wesleyan continues to pull out close wins advancing to the semifinals of the PIT by knocking off #2 seed D'Youville on a tip in at the buzzer by Shawn Burton. James Scrivner had a monster day with 13 points and 14 rebounds and Edwin Hebert chipped in 12 points from the perimeter to lead the Marlins to the win. Virginia Wesleyan held a 39-23 edge on the boards, but the real difference in the game was the Spartans poor shooting from the foul line as they only managed 5-14. D'Youville got 15 points from Derek Stewart, 12 from David Hidalgo, and 11 from Hugo Meeks. Meeks however really struggled from the line going 1-7 which played a big role in the one point loss.
Wesleyan got off to a good start with an early 7-0 run and John Jackson increased that lead to 9 with a basket at the 8:45 mark, but a Stewart three cut the lead to 4. Later a William Viens three trimmed the lead to one, but VW got hot and finished the first half with a 9-2 run for a 36-28 lead at the break.
The second half saw D'Youville begin to assert itself as they pushed through to a two point lead capped by a Stewart three. Wesleyan retook the lead and the teams suddenly struggled over the next four minutes to produce much of anything. The Spartans then broke through again with a 6-0 run to take a 47-43 lead. After a Scrivner lay in, Viens hit two free throws and a bucket to up the lead to 6. Hebert hit a big three to keep the game close as the teams battled down the stretch with D'Youville holding a one to three point lead for the last 4 minutes.
Then it got interesting. Down one, Virginia Wesleyan's Joseph Simmons blocked a shot with 21 seconds that was rebounded by Shawn Burton. Scrivner hit a short floater for the Marlins to regain the lead with 16 seconds . Viens missed, but Stewart was there to bank it in for a Spartan one point lead with just 8 seconds . VW's Jackson missed, but Burton was in the right place at the right time for the tip in at the buzzer and allowed the Marlins to escape with the upset victory and a place in the semifinals against ODAC rival Lynchburg.

Hornets win rubber match with Marlins and get title shot
Lynchburg faced Virginia Wesleyan for the third time this year and for the second time in postseason play, the Hornets came out on top. Lead by a wide margin in fouls and free throws, Lynchburg held off the Marlins for an 80-72 win and a spot in the PIT final opposite Eureka who defeated Endicott earlier. The Hornets were lead by Todd Nathanson (19 points) and Michael Smith (18 points) and hit 32-43 free throws compared to VW's 11-14. The Marlins got quality efforts from John Jackson (15 points), Edwin Hebert (13 points), and Ivan Foulks (13 points, 10 rebounds).
The first half saw Virginia Wesleyan come to play with an excellent gameplan as they opened an early 11-4 lead capped by an Hebert three. Foulks later jammed one down to increase the lead to 9 with 13:04 in the half. Lynchburg battled back only to watch Hebert bury two more threes around the four minute mark to regain the nine point lead. Wesleyan continued to pile it on as Jackson nailed two more threes for a 16 point advantage with 2:29 in the half. The Hornets slowly cut into the lead from the foul line as they trimmed the deficit to 43-37 at the half. The Marlins surprised Lynchburg by hitting 8-11 threes in the first half which lead to a fortunate defensive adjustment for the Hornets.
Playing more on the perimeter, Lynchburg shut down the Marlins to start the second half and fought back to take a two point lead to begin the half. The turning point of the game occurred at the 15:27 mark as Hebert picked up his 4th foul on an illegal screen. The Marlins were down two at the time, but the Hornets upped it to 7 without the leadership of Hebert in the game. However Wesleyan did hang tough as Foulks' three-point play cut the lead to one, but a 7-0 run by Lynchburg re-established the lead and the Marlins were unable to recover. Hebert did return, but picked up his 5th foul with 3:40 leading to 2 Smith free throws and a nine point lead for the Hornets. Wesleyan was able to cut it to five late, but just didn't have the same firepower in the second half. Lynchburg advances to its second PI final in the last 6 years.

Hornets claim PIT title!!!
Lynchburg overcame some poor foul shooting and benefitted from a 2 to 1 foul ratio in defeating the Eureka Red Devils 92-78 to claim their first ever PIT championship last night. Senior center Todd Nathanson capped an up and down year by scoring 16 points, senior guard Robert Hinnenkamp also scored 16 points, and senior guard Michael Smith added 15 points to lead 6 players in double figures for the Hornets. Eureka was lead by Joseph Baldwin's 19 points off the bench and Fred Martone's 16 points and 13 rebounds.
Lynchburg got off to a slow start, but Nathanson provided the spark to cut an early 6-1 deficit to one. Four early misses from the charity stripe and solid Red Devil play lead to a 12-5 lead that Eureka pushed to 25-12 as Martone seemed unstoppable inside. The Hornets battled back until, down 6, James Puzinski came off the bench to hit 2 free throws and a short jumper followed by a steal by John Lee and a Hinnenkamp three put the Hornets on top. The teams then fought to a tie at the half at 41-all.
Lynchburg came out strong in the second half behind Nathanson and Hinnenkamp for a 51-43 lead. The Hornets kept the pressure on and lead by six when Terry Lambert, who had been quiet, nailed a big three for a nine point cushion. The teams traded scores until Puzinski hit two free throws and John Gregoire got a big steal and lay up for a 13 point lead at 3:44 . James Atkinson hit 1-2 of two free throws to complete a 16-4 run that put the game away as Lynchburg rolled to a 92-78 victory.
