(ttjackson's other id) So Mike, with that size of a budget going into the season ($80 million) with great pitching depth, how high should I have my player budget given the arbitration issues, etc.?

I'd have to look at the players in arb but if you're locked up at 80m before it, you're going to need 100m+.
Sounds like you've got a set team and won't need FA. But injuries are going to happen. You'll have to call players up so you need some room. Otherwise, you'll have to trade out some quality to create it.

I wouldn't release a player I could use. Worst case, you'll have to pass him thru waivers to send him down. Then, if/when injuries occur, you can bring him back up.
I let a pretty solid C go because I couldn't get him for a reasonable amount and I had some depth in the minors. So if a guy wants too much and you have a cheaper, suitable replacement, send him packing.

i think the comments on FAs a few pages back was really useful. I'm guessing there's an assumption that FAs will be plentiful (and good!).
but typically, how that often works out is just as someone described, the few actual good ones go for really high dollar, and even mediocre guys are overpaid. that's often how it is in RL.

I spent considerably more than I intended.

In regards to international scouting, when the international report comes is it for players to sign as FA right away, FA for next year, or players that are eligible for the amatuer draft?
6/7/2006 4:09 PM
IS is independent of the AD. We haven't reached that period yet. I understand that they're for immediate signing.

Thanks Mike.
For coaches, should I assume a Hitting Coach's skills in baserunning, patience, etc. is just gravy on top of their hitting expertise?
For example, a Hitting coach with 50 baserunning will help my team's baserunning more so than a hitting coach with 10 baserunning or are their other skills sets not factored in if they are slotted for a specific role (ie Hitting, bullpen, 1st base coach, etc.)
6/7/2006 4:18 PM
I did. I'm hoping it's true because I used it as a guideline when two coaches were fairly even in their designated specialty.

Is there a way to promote coaches? Could I offer last year's bullpen coach the pitching coach job and then look for a new bullpen coach?
Also, to what extent did you guys adjust your minor league rosters? Have you noticed any harm in say, putting hitting prospects in extreme pitchers parks or vice versa?

Does signing international prospects come out of your prospects budget or your regular payroll?
6/7/2006 5:12 PM
the bonus given to the prospects comes from the prospect payroll. His actual salary is the player payroll.

if you trade for cash, your player payroll budget goes up by that amount, and the $185 isn't a hard cap. in other words, you're right... except you might as well use the "stash," because it doesn't roll over to the next season.
Fantastic info. Thanks!

If I go over the hard cap for season #1, will I need to get back under $185 in season #2? Before or after season #2 starts...

When is the rookie draft? Is it in the middle of the year much like RL?
6/7/2006 5:17 PM
the rookie draft for us is 6/22, and we started on 5/15. we get to see the prospects on 6/18.

you'll need to allocate $185 at the beginning of season 2, so there's no way to be over it going into a season.

The Amateur Draft is in the middle of the season like RL.

You will have to allocate enough money in your budget to cover the contracts to which you've committed. I don't think you'll be able to acquire a player if his season 2 contract puts you over your season 2 limit, so your scenario can't occur - I believe you can only spend up to 80% of your budgeted Player Payroll on season 2 salaries, regardless of the amount you acquire through trades.
