re: Big Least - looks like Boise St is having second thoughts. That won't help the new tv deal...
BCS has already said that the new contract won't have automatic qualifying for conferences. So, the only reason that Boise St. and San Diego St. joined the Big East has become a non-factor. Boise's dilemma:

1) They have until June 30 to officially withdraw from the MWC;
2) The Big West, poised to take all of Boise's non-football sports, is all but dead.
3) The MWC won't allow Boise St. to stay without football.

..plus add that Boise/SD State will most likely make their decision before the BigEast has a new TV football contract.  If the BigEast somehow manages to get a deal worth $6-8 million per team, that's a lot of money (AQ or not) for the western teams to walk away from by going back to the Mountain West and it's TV contract worth a little over $1 million per school for all sports.

Sean Wood, new coach at Morehead St., said that he wants to make Morehead "the Gonzaga of the South".  Good luck with that one, Sean. There's a big difference between Spokane, Washington (pop. 208,000) and Morehead, Kentucky (pop. 6,800)

Of course, compared to his previous job at Mississippi Valley (in Itta Bena, MS, pop. 2200), Morehead is a step up.

For example, Mississippi Valley State's ceaseless need for money led to bizarre schedules. The first home game in 2011-12 came on Jan. 3, and followed road games at Notre Dame, DePaul, North Carolina, South Carolina, Arkansas, Florida and Wisconsin. They won one non-com game (in 2OT vs. Tennessee State) but lost close ones to South Carolina, 61-57, and Iowa St. ,65-63.  They then went 17-1 in conference play.
Woods would be better trying to emulate Murray St, which has standing room only in their 9,000 arena. (more than 1/2 the population of Murray, KY).  Morehead averaged 2800 in a 6500 seat gym

Binghamton, probably the worst job in D1, has interviewed two candidates:  Rider head coach Terry Dempsey and New Jersey Institute of Technology head coach Jim Engles.
Binghamton has already lost 3 freshmen from last year's recruiting class. They finished 2-27 in 2011-12 and were dead last in RPI.

They're still recovering from the scandal of their previous coach. The school significantly lowered the admission standards for basketball players. Four administrators, and the coach, lost their jobs. The coach was given a $1,2 million buyout and is now a "special assistant" at Georgetown

al, in all fairness, do you really think Zaga's success stems from being in a larger town? It's not like they're mining lots of talent from the greater Spokane area ...

Probably not, but Spokane would be  more impressive to recruits than Morehead, KY. I've been to Spokane twice and it's very nice.  Morehead's nice, too, but it's 60 miles from Lexington. There's not as much to do off-campus in Morehead. It's in a "moist"  county and only package liquor is available within Morehead itself. The rest of the county is dry.  There are no bars and alcohol isn't sold in restaurants.

"Moist" county ... I love it.

Barring a final negotiation breakdown, Binghamton is expected to hire Rider coach Tommy Dempsey.

Binghamton did hire former Rider coach Tommy Dempsey and at almost the same time Rider hired Kevin Baggett.  Baggett was the Associate Head Coach at Rider for the last 4 seasons.  Dempsey's career path seems to be moving in the wrong direction. He got fired from a 13-19 Rider team and is taking over a 2-29 Binhamton team.

...and goes down a step in conference prestige to the American East.  Dempsey is from that area (Scranton, PA, 50 miles from Binghamton) and feels he can make a winner of Binghamton. They gave him a subtantial raise in pay, too.Kevin Baggett has been their assistant since 2006. Ironically, Rider's head assistant left last season to become the assistant at Columbia. Had he remained at Rider, he likely would've gotten the job.  Rider's last three coaches were promoted assistants.

Amazing.

While Mississippi Valey State is the last D1 program looking for a coach, according to Jeff Goodman of CBSSports.com, Bob Burton, Cal State-Fullerton’s head basketball coach for the past decade, is stepping down. Just seems like odd timing for him to leave 3 months after the season ended.

Yes, the timing is odd. I hope he's healthy.  Fullerton has named Andy Newman as interim.  I suspect they'll keep him for next season before looking for a replacement.

I missed Brown's hiring. They have Mike Martin, a Brown alum who's been as assistant at Penn.

Mississippi Valley:

Interim head coach Chico Potts, Arkansas-Pine Bluff head coach George Ivory and Harvey Wardell, an assistant coach at Tougaloo College, are the three finalists for the position.

MVSU conducted phone interviews with the candidates Thursday and will release the name of the new head coach this week.
