Listen to zhawks - I went to him for advice when I was starting out and it made a huge difference. A couple of other things I would add specifically about D3:
- Figure out what your team is going to be about. For me, I'm about 3pt shooting, rebounding, and tough man-to-man defense. So I recruit for Reb, Def, and Ath in my bigs, and Per and Def in my swingmen. PG - I start with BH, Pass, Def, and Spd.
- You're going to have to make sacrifices at D3. For PF/C, if I can get LP or decent speed, that's great, but I've had 30 LP guys shoot 55% from the field because they're getting so many offensive rebounds. Likewise, I've had 38 PER guards shoot 40% from 3pt. Focus first on recruiting players who meet your strengths, not on all-around players. There just aren't many of those at D3.
- I pay a lot of attention to WE and potential. At D3, in my system, a center who can become a 75 Reb (or a guard who can become a 75 BH / Pass) is a gem, and the only way I'm going to get those guys is with high potential and high WE.
