6yr MLFAs and ratings growth Topic

Yeah, that's it. You should be thanking me for bumping this thread by responding. Otherwise, it's on page 2 already. You know why?

"This may come as a surprise to you but players with great potential don't toil in AAA(or below) for 6 seasons."

I'd go a step further .. I now expect virtually no improvement after three years. After six, fuhgedaboutit.

But, then there are the limited cases which MikeT points to, when players have been abused by relatively poor coaching, lack of playing time, lack of promotions, etc. Then I'd expect to see improvement, but by that time these guys are career minor leaguers... or possible ML pine-riders on a poor/rebuilding team.

If that's true, then people shouldn't draft anyone with more than a 20-pt gap between current and projected, because it's almost impossible for most players to make up that big a gap in three seasons.

I think people tend to overvalue the projecteds ... I'm doubtful whether there is any difference in the REAL gap at the start of a player's career. The APPARENT gap is irrelevant.

Slammin' Sammy closed that gap.

You might see 10, 5, 3. Then you're looking at 1-2 points, max, a season. But, as I said, "This may come as a surprise to you but players with great potential don't toil in AAA(or below) for 6 seasons."

Good ol' Slammin' Sammy!!! I've missed the daily updates in HJ. Sometimes even hourly.

I'm annoyed with that world. I generally don't post in worlds I'm annoyed with unless I feel like arguing about what annoys me. I don't feel like arguing.

Except with sandybear. And only with him because he's acting like there would be a flood of examples giving him hope if I'd quit posting in this thread.

But, if you want one, Slammin' Sammy isn't getting as much playing time as anticipated because Nasty Nate is just plain destroying RH pitching. The plan was for SS to get 400-450 PA with NN getting the remaining PA for catchers(strictly vs. RH).

In 150 AB, NN has 17 homers with 319/401/699 vs RH. SS has 38 homers in 291 AB(190 AB, 30 homers and 384/421/932 vs ies).

Not exactly. I think that people sometimes avoid threads where you snark and harrumph and so on.

My guy, with his old team, improved three points OVR at age 23, four points OVR at age 22, five points OVR at age 21, and four points OVR at age 20.

I wasn't expecting that kind of growth at 24 or 25. But my initial question was whether the 6-yr MLFA status affected him.

Responses given:

a) players with great potential don't toil in AA for 6 seasons (factually incorrect for this player)

b) players don't improve after four (or three seasons). (incorrect with this player, as he improved in his fifth and sixth seasons).

Still trying to get an answer to the question asked.

A) So you believe he has great potential? Based on what?

B) No one has said players don't improve after 3-4 seasons. They just don't make "substantial" improvements(which is the question asked).

I signed a solid 24-yo MR prospect, with a 58 OVR/65 proj. OVR. The guy has 80 makeup.

He had a little bump after spring training -- 1 pt. each for control and his #2 and #3 pitches -- but no increases in the three cycles since. He's getting a decent number of IP at AAA, and there's a very good pitching coach.

There's time for this guy to improve, of course. But I'm wondering whether the fact that he was a 6-yr MLFA dampens his potential for hitting his ratings ceiling. If he hits it or comes close, he should be a solid major-leaguer. As is, he's a AAA guy only.

Original question: I'm wondering whether the fact that he was a 6-yr MLFA dampens his potential for hitting his ratings ceiling.

Are you sure that was the original question? Because I just quoted the first post and it looks like it was "had substantial ratings growth afterward?"
10/13/2009 1:58 PM
Substantial meaning similar to what he had done in his 22 and 23 yo seasons.
10/13/2009 2:00 PM
That's a low standard for "substantial" if you ask me.
