I've found that you can get a quality SP in the 1st or supplemental 1st. Or you can get a quality player at a tough defensive position.

Round 2 and 3 you can get a stud 1B/LF/DH or a quality RP.

Round 4 and 5 you can get a decent RP and a platoon hitter. I've sometimes found speedy guys with no power and who would be below-average defensively at 2B/CF.

Round 6 and 7 you can still find a quality defensive C, RPs with a deficiency (like mediocre pitch quality) and platoon 1B/LF/DH types.

After that, pray for a DITR.

Just so mike doesnt feel alone i looked at my team in Addicted Users also in season 13. I only did the 1st 5 rounds, after that is gets really bleak. I have never drafted higher then 21st.

1st Round
8 picks/8 pros
2 pitchers (1579 Innings) 6 batters(9426 ab's) 2xSS, 1x1st, 2xCOF, 1x2nd.

2ndRnd
7 Picks/6 Pros
3 Pitchers(633 ip) 2 active batters(1279 ab's) 1 x CF, 1 X COF.
1 retired 3rd baseman (1470 ab's)

3rd Rnd
8 picks/6 pros
1 retired pitcher (36ip) 6 Batters (2929 abs) 2X CF, 1 X C, 1 x 2nd, 1 x 1st

4th Rnd
7 picks/3 pros
2 pitchers (297 ip) 1 x2nd baseman (7)

5th Rnd
7 picks/ 3 pros
no pitchers
3 batters (1672ab) 1st/2nd/C

i am far better at drafting batters then pitchers.

My "best" are a 5th rounder in Mantle who made the majors with another franchise, and a 4th rounder who's now starting his sixth season on the big league roster for me in Coop.

I also have a 16th round DITR who has a chance to make my major league squad in another season or so.

This is an interesting exercise. I've done it for two teams, and though both were great with first round picks, one was 0/15 with second though fifth round picks. Not surprising, that franchise is very difficult to maintain a high quality, and depends much more on aging veterans to succeed.

First round (Shtickless and HR combined)
14 picks/13 pros
7 pitchers (6200 IP) and 6 PP (14,000 AB)

Second round
12 picks/6 pros
4 pitchers (1800 IP) and 2 PP (400 AB)

Third round
13 picks/6 pros
1 pitcher (300 IP) and 5 PP (1600 AB)

Fourth round
10 picks/2 pros
2 PP (2000 AB)

Fifth round
12 picks/1 pro
1 pitcher (375 IP)

I've also had one 6th, two 8th, a 12th and a 19th round pick make the majors for those two teams.

I've got a catcher drafted in Round 20 of Season 2 who is currently on my major-league roster in Season 13 at age 31 (not through any great attributes on his part but because I've done a horrible job of developing catchers ever since) and has 254 career ML atbats (3083 minor league at bats).

I remember him because he was "not scouted well enough" for me to see any ratings before I signed him and he turned out to be much better than the typical 20th-round pick.

Draft results for my longest running team (Fargo in Happy Jack) from Seasons 1 to 8:
1st Round: 13 MLers/13 Signed Picks = 10 pitchers giving 4651.2 IP and 3 positions players getting 3675 AB over 29 complete seasons
2nd Round: 2 MLers/6 Signed Picks = 2 pitchers giving 262.1 IP and 1 position player getting 66 AB over 2 complete seasons
3rd Round: 2 MLers/7 Signed Picks = 0 pitchers giving 0 IP and 2 position players getting 1627 AB over 3 complete seasons
4th Round: 0 MLers/8 Signed Picks = Big fat goose egg
5th Round: 2 MLers/7 Signed Picks = 1 pitcher giving 80.2 IP and 1 position player getting 2315 AB over 5 complete seasons
Solid contributions from my first rounders, but wow.... gets pretty thin after that.

Funny. I thought marriage meant having less time on your hands to waste. My bad.

I did some research on all of Cobb World a few months back on the first five seasons of the draft for the Cobb blog. Cobb is now in S14, for reference. Here is the link to the wrap up post with info pretty similar to what is in this thread:

a peeve of mine with no easy solution is that i have a draft with 7 picks in the first 2 rounds (#27, 3 comp picks, 3 2nd rounders) and i would trade 'em all for the #12 overall.
