What is the Point of Rookie League? Topic

The easiest way to fix it is to fill from the bottom levels up, rather than top down.

I was somewhat late to the "not-recruit-RL-coaching" bandwagon, but once on it, have gotten some AA level coaches at RL.

If you want to call that "cheating", go ahead.

The simple solution is to not have more than three "extra" coaches available at any level at any time. If there are 8 BL PC positions , drop all but 11 PC to the minors. Owners can always "hire up" if they think a LoA coach is better than what's available at HiA or AA.

Then assign the worst available coach at that level when hiring ends to those who chose not to participate in coach hiring.

I don't follow the "cheating" argument. There are rules to the game. Things happen when you do or don't do something. If the result of action or inaction provides an advantage, to me, proper game play would dictate that you take (or as the case may be do not take) that action.

If people are going to classify certain actions as cheating, how is one to know where to draw the line. Is managing service time and your 40 man roster to the best possible outcome cheating because the game does not follow real life MLB rules?

i don't see how anyone can make a sound argument that having the AI hire your coaches is gaming the system and/or cheating...
10/21/2009 2:08 PM
Well I suppose the arguement goes something like this:

1)having the AI hire your coaches is supposed to give you less desirable coaches than what you could have hired your self as a bit of a punishment for not getting the job done:

2) It has been learned by expirience that alot of the time you actually get better coaches cheaper that way.

3) Therefore if you take advantage of this coding flaw you are cheating.

The hole argument reminds me a fight I once had with my brother-in-law regarding the practice of check raising as a bluff in poker, you only think of it as cheating if you didn't think of it first.

i guess i would buy into that argument provided WIS has confirmed that AI hiring coaches is "supposed" to net you worse coaches...is that true? or just assumed?
10/21/2009 2:27 PM
i guess i look at it like this since we're using poker analogies:

let's say 6 of us sit down to a game of hold'em

as it turns out, there's a mirror behind you and i can see your cards. well that's against the rules - so that's cheating and you don't have the same ability to do this. so again, cheating.

let's say they change the rules though and now you CAN look at a mirror. but only i have the mirror - so i would say it's gaming/cheating because it's only available to me.

now let's say the rules of the game say you can do it this way (look at your opponents cards) AND everyone has the mirror. in this case, even though what a dumb game it would make - it's not cheating or gaming because it's something everyone can do and it's been said it's not against the rules.

sure there's a fine line between gaming the system and cheating but someone else brought cheating into the mix - not me.

until WIS tells me it's broken and we've fixed it - considering it's available to all - i guess i have a hard time buying into it being anything other than a feature of the game (potentially unintended at that)

i think the better and often made argument is that coach hiring sucks and needs fixed.

jj, you don't seem to know much about poker.

If there's a mirror behind you, and I look at it to see your cards, it isn't cheating. It's your own damn fault for sitting in front of a mirror. Same goes for those idiots that wear reflective sunglasses.

Now, if I put a mirror up that you don't know about (or put a spy behind you to give me signals), that's cheating.

Maybe you have better coaches at RL. It happens. Gives you one more level.

Yeah, that might happen sometimes, but not too often for owners who don't do the auto-assigning thing for coaches. Even so, an IFA signed before the draft should go straight to Low A, imo, instead of wasting time not getting PT in RL.
What is "the auto-assigning thing for coaches," please?

Anyone?

I didn't read all that but, at the end of the day, I've found that I get better LoA/RL coaches if I don't hire them. Occassionally, I'll re-hire one because he was assigned the season before and is pretty good. But, for the most part, there's no reason to hire LoA/RL coaches.

I hardly think it's cheating or even having a "cheating mindset". If I discovered that LH 90+ power guys hit a homer every time they faced a RH, I'd tell WifS that there's a programming flaw. If they gave me the "Thanks for the ticket. We analyze suggestions, blah, blah, blah", I'd load up on LH 90+ power guys.

Is that cheating?

todd - yes that was a more apt analogy but you get my drift

I usually do the same with my "college prospects" but some of the HS prospects need the seasoning (present 42, projected 82) and are not ready for A ball.

However the generalization holds for most HBD "players". Those assigned to rookie ball will not make the bigs. The reason for this is the absence of true DITRs who improve beyond anyones dreams. Until WIS figures out how to run DITR so that some true stars are created from low draft picks there is no reason for a draft past 10 rounds or to have Rookie and Low A ball other than that is what is in MLB - but MLB has rookie and Low A ball because some late rounders DO beat the odds.

I've got a few guys that are projected 80+ in range, glove, arm and accuracy... that are probably a 50 across the board right now. They have to play somewhere. Rookie league it is.

I think the promotions bump IS a real thing and not just the usual increase IF it is done at the end of the year. You can get a 6th cycle development cycle out of guys that you wouldn't usually get that year, so it accelerates development a little bit.
