Agreed. I look at it like this, if a school like Fairleigh Dickinson hired a D2 coach it would be much easier to sell to their board, alums and fans that the D2 coach they just hire won NCOY over some other D2 coach who while having good success at D2 never won it. Either way nobody will have ever heard of either coach, but being able to say this guy won NCOY will make people more readily accept the hire. I guess since nobody has any solid evidence either way I guess I'll just wait and see
Again, I just think it's a blip on the radar compared to the meat-and-potatoes of a coach's resume. I'm a Wisconsin fan, and when they hired Bo Ryan, I could've have given two craps if he's won NCOY at UW-Plateville. His multiple national championships and most wins of any program in the 90's, however ... that intrigued me.

And I've had previous conversations with CS about promotions ... NCOY is a nice cherry on top, but it does not have a major impact.

It's a solid tool to use as a tie-breaker IMO. If two coaches are very close maybe same recent success, 20-30 wins difference in their career and one has 3 NCOTY to none. Sure that very likely could sway my choice if I were an AD, otherwise it really doesn't matter.

To be honest, I don't think it should have a huge impact. I couldn't even tell you who won NCOY the last 2-3 seasons in real life. It's just not something that carries a lot of actual weight/importance.

daalter is correct. I won back to back NCOY awards at Marquette and lost out to bmckay @ 'Rado who had a better last season. that previous season trumps all in job promotions.

LOL, I was sure eventually somebody would say this. But this isn't even close to true, do you really think I'm trying to impress a bunch of people I have never met and probably will never meet by telling them I won NCOY (in D2)? It was legitamate question because I've never applied to a D1 school and was hoping I'd get a nice boost from it, and wanted to see if people had any experiences with this. BTW this isn't the first time I won NCOY and you won't find a post about the 1st time anywhere. So it's not like this is the 1st time I've won something and I'm trying to flaunt it.
someone's a little too defensive...
