It is more of a team effect with zones. I've seen some coaches put in into perspective this way: in a 2-3, the guards' def abilities are averaged. So if you have 1 good defender and a bad one, it's like you have an OK total defense on the perimeter. Then the same goes for the 3, the Fs and C are taken as a whole. If they're all bad, then you still have a poor defense on the interior. Having high Ath/Spd and Def IQs is another way to make up for bad Def ratings. As a group, I'd want faster guards than what you have. The extra speed
should help them cover more area.
