True. But I'd still think about it before I did it. But having roster flexibility is generally more valuabe than a point or 2 on marginal players.

I think in general people agree.

But say you have a book you no longer want. Say it's worth $100, but if you stick it in your closet for a while, it'll go down to $98. What's the harm in trying to sell it for $100 right now?

Sure, you can shove it in the closet and get only $2 less later. But if you're done with it, there's no harm in at least SEEing if someone will pay the $100.. if not, nothing lost.

I assume you'll say this was too long or stupid.. but I thought it was decent analogy

Exactly moustachee- it's simple maximization.
3/2/2010 4:34 PM
The problem with that is simple: How long do you shop your book before you put it in the closet? That's what people seem to be missing. Of course you try to sell it. But, at some point, no one wants it. Do you just keep it out forever?

If nobody wants it, you probably overestimated its value and find that it's going for 17 cents on eBay.

But if a player is actually of quality, you shouldn't advise a n00b to just demote him.
3/2/2010 5:09 PM
If a n00b has said "I want him off my books. No one will take him in trade", I'd say the player has no trade value. Demote him, don't demote him. But he's been shopped and no buyers were found. It's not different than posting the same crappy player over and over again in World Chat. No one wants him.
3/2/2010 5:14 PM
Futhermore, if he's of "quality", you shouldn't be desperate to give him away for nothing but, if you are, he's not turning into a turd because of a demotion penalty.

there's a difference between the value of a player and his trade value.

i.e. anybody would take a $500K house for free, but only a complete 'tard would pay $1M for it. when nobody does pay $1M, the logical solution is not to demolish the garage so the house is now only worth $450K.

make sense?
3/2/2010 5:22 PM
so if you have a $5M player getting paid $10M, he has positive value as a player but negative trade value because of the price.

so you kick in a prospect or cash or whatever to counter balance his negative value and you can clear the bloated salary off the books. demote him and he's now worth $4.5 mill and you have to kick in more to unload him.

it's especially detrimental for a guy with a 4 or 5 year contract.
3/2/2010 5:24 PM
Uh, we're talking about fake players. You get about 160 for $24.95. Each player is only worth about 15 cents each.

But, beyond that, you're acting as if losing a point in contact, speed, VL, VR and eye devalues the player to the point of worthlessness. It doesn't, Arlenod.
3/2/2010 5:26 PM
If you were friggin literate you would see quite clearly that's not my point.

AND STOP CALLING ME ARLEN, JERKFACE!!!
3/2/2010 5:29 PM
If you'd admit that acting as if losing a point in a few different categories was the end of a player's career is quite Arlenesque, I'd stop calling you Arlen.
3/2/2010 5:32 PM
Yes acting that way is quite Arlenesque.

But I'm not acting that way. So eat me.

Also, and it's nothing but a suspicsion, I think WifS has dialed back demotion penalties. Or I've been very fortunate. The last half dozen or so I've done did not trigger a hit.
3/2/2010 5:36 PM
Oddly enough, I've been noticing more:

I already posted this in the other thread, but Jose Cornejo actually did lose his marginal career by getting demoted. The 69 glove was pushing it at 2B and 66 is too weak for my taste. For a guy that posts a .654 OPS, losing 5/2/3/4 contact/splits/eye is bad news and losing 5 points to baserunning makes his basestealing less efficient.

Again, there wasn't much of a career for him to begin with, but I would have kept him around until arb1 if he didn't get wrecked on that penalty.
