Meanwhile, in southern Ohio, the 5th and 6th grade classes are heavily populated with 7th and 8th graders. In 3 or 4 years, when they enter high school, a significant minority of them are projected to be able to read.

I hear ya, al, I just can't wrap my mind around it. only 5 high schoolers are better than the middle schoolers in a school that size? Hmm...

"In Kentucky, there's only one class in basketball."

That's one thing that's always ****** me off about national coverage...everybody made a huge deal when Indiana HS hoops went to multi-class tourneys, but nobody ever gives Kentucky its props for sticking with the single class format. And, quite frankly, Kentucky's high school basketball history is every bit as storied as Indiana's, straight down to the Cinderella stories. Carr Creek's 1956 title ought to be as every bit storied as Milan's, playing the coal mining equivalent of the Indiana farmboys.

I'm rambling, but KY HS hoops >>>>>> IND HS hoops.

We are talking about girls. Who knows?

Yes, it was quite an upset. After losing to Holmes twice by 28 total points in the regular season, Newport beat them 60-34. Holmes was the defending state champ and is one of the largest schools in the state. Tiny Newport makes the Sweet 16 for the first time in 48 years!

Not sure why it matters that they are girls, isack. My point was more that it would be remarkable that, what, 15 middle schoolers would be better than all but 5 players in a high school of 1200. It's not like they came from a different area, they all came up through the same system, same demographics.

Like I said, I'm intrigued by it.

Ok, so I looked around and the same site that 2 days ago (Kentucky High School Athletic Association) that had all those middle schoolers listed, now has the Henderson County roster at 3 Srs, 3 Jrs and 6 Frosh. Another site had one of those freshman listed on last year's Indiana (yup, she's listed as from KY, but played for them) Elite 7-8th grade all star team LAST year as an 8th grader, so...

Did you get that middle school info from the same site I did, al, or somewhere else, because it seems like it was corrected recently. Either way, it sounds like those freshmen stepped up.

The school Al mentioned in the OP was Anderson Co.

LOL, not sure how I mixed 'em up. Still in my quandry phase then. Why do their High Schools suck so hard? Not that the McDonald girl isn't a phenom.

This all sounds crazy to me. As a high school coach in Colorado we aren't even allowed to have middle school kids at a practice and can't coach a middle school kid except in the summer.

The field is set for the Kentucky 'Sweet 16' next week.

Two 'A' schools (defined as lower 1/3 in enrollment) are still playing. Newport (565 students) is making their 1st appearance since 1962.

In the lower bracket is Shelby Valley (599 students). At #5, they are the highest ranked team in the lower bracket. This is the 6th appearance for Shelby Valley since 2002 but they've only advanced to the 2nd round once. Shelby Valley is an Appalachain school. 64% of their students qualify for the free lunch or reduced-price lunch programs.

The largest schools still playing are #1 Louisville Ballard (1689) and Louisville Butler (1650)

On the girls' side, Marion County is the favorite. They are led by two blueblood freshmen, both 2-year starters. Kyvin Goodin-Rogers is the daughter of Tick Rogers, who played at Louisville. Makayla Epps is the daughter of former UK star Anthony Epps who starred at Marion County and won the 1993 state tournament. Epps is the assistant coach for his daughter's team.

Great info al. I'll be tuned in. We're in the greatest 4 weeks in sports right now IMO. With NCAA and high school tournaments, MLB spring training, NFL free agency, it doesn't get any better.

Both of the talented younger teams were eliminated in the opening round of the Girls' Sweet 16.

#1 Marion County fell to #6 Louisville Mercy 67-51. Anderson County, starting two 8th graders, lost 70-55 to Clay County, who qualified for the Sweet 16 for the first time in 32 years.
