I decided to check for "Stupid fielding substitions" just to "prove" my point.   I chose Coop(since we just finished S14).  I didn't find a single pitcher used as a fielding sub in those 14 seasons.    I found several 1-2 inning appearances by DH/C/LF-types at middle infield positions.   I'm assuming these were replacements due to PH appearances.  In truth, I/we can probably fix those by changing our PH settings when we know we don't have a back-up SS/2B/CF on the bench.

yeah, honestly I think this is the first time I have ever seen it happen (P for SS).  My only gripe is that is something that would never happen in real life, therefore I shouldn't have to protect myself from it.

How in the world did you check all that data??

I know most of my players.   So I just looked at who played 1-2 games at a position in each season's fielding stats.  If I wasn't sure(and it got tough 4-5 seasons back), I'd check his listed position.

I read this thread earlier today and thought, "Man, that would suck.  I don't think that has ever happened to me..."

Then, the pm2 game today in CAPB: "S.Bedard enters the game at C following an injury."  Sam Bedard is a pitcher that had started the last game for me.  With my pitcher catching, I blew a 2 run 10th innnig lead and lost.

My team sucks this season, and it wasn't an "important" game, but that does suck when it happens.

Now I'm wondering if it was one of the wonderful "unintended effects" from this update:

And finally, we have made some engine improvements:
  • Improved logic for choosing relief pitcher when all relief pitchers are below auto-rest level or resting (desperate situation).  Manager compares those that can pitch in relief, then those that can pitch in the inning, then fatigue difference (20 points better will give nod), then statistics.  Previously, fatigue check was not in place.
  • Improved late inning pinch-running logic. Manager is no longer so stringent when looking at the incumbent baserunner.
  • Improved logic for deciding to play the infield in. If it’s past the 6th and team is trailing by more than 5, the team will no longer play the infield in.
  • Improved logic for deciding to take the extra base in the 7th or later.  More cautious baserunning, better decision making tied to overall logic rather than just baserunner skill.
  • Improved logic for pinch-hitting for a pitcher. Previously manager would consider PH for pitcher even if no healthy, non-resting pitchers were available in pen despite a tie game in the 9th and the pitcher still had innings left in his tank

Coop's season, for me, ended on 6/22.   You guys have had an extra 20+ games to have it happen.

Well, looking at another team, I found one on 6/3.   Extra inning game, injury replacement.  A pitcher pinch ran for my injured SS and another pitcher came in to play the final inning at SS.

At least it's not a by-product of the 6/22 update.

I went back and looked closer at the boxscore - I still had my regular DH on the bench.  Which means Simmy went to the bullpen for a SS replacement before my bench.  Granted, I would actually rather have my RP playing SS than my DH, but that still seems like the wrong order.

In a perfect real world situation, here is how that would have happened - my SS goes down with an injury, the current DH (who normally plays 2B anyway) goes to SS and the pitcher hits for himself.  Isn't that how that works in the AL?  If you move your DH to the field, the pitcher has to hit for themself?  I've never seen that happen in HBD.

But man, programming for every different situation where you have thousands of possibilities...
7/1/2010 8:34 AM
That's how it works in the AL.   If the DH is put in the field, you lose your DH.

Of course, and I have to say it, how many owners would start a thread with "WTF?  SIMMY puts my DH in the field and I lose the DH position!!!  How does the game end?  WITH MY PITCHER STRIKING OUT WITH BASES LOADED IN A 1 RUN GAME!!!!!"

I had a similar game the other day.

Sim subbed in a back up 2B to play SS.  My starting 2B and CF are also backup SS in my defensive heirachy.  I'd like to have seen Simmy move one of them to SS, since they are able to play that position, and sub in that backup 2B to either 2B or CF.

At least that happens in real life though.  At that point it is a complaint about team performance and not unrealistic management.

got a reply to a ticket...nothing spectacular, but kind of informative

"Currently, the engine cannot handle moving around players that are already in the game, it can only replace specific players. It's something that we hope to add in a future update."
