If I understand correctly, if you have 1st pick, you are correct.  But, if, for example, the 1986 team drafts before  you, that team could draft a 1987 player who later played in 1990 and you would lose him.  Also, if I understand correctly, my 1952 team need not draft '52 Mays because I could draft him in 1954 and no other team could come up ahead of me in the draft to claim him.  Interesting twists and turns to this one...

You don't have to draft players as rookies. So couldn't the 57 Braves or the 64 Cards draft him?
