Sorry to disappoint you, hutch, but he signed his 4-year, $8.1 million offer. I gave him a mutual option, but not the no-trade clause.

Final verdict: A 50 percent increase over his asking price did the trick. But I'm nearly certain, given his low patience, that he would not have signed anything if I had taken him to that second year of arbitration.
damn it

I've gotten players back just by adding a year at their asking price.

I've got a SS who will be a FA at the end of the season.  We're still in ST right now, so I've got awhile before I need to make a decision on him, but, is there a chance I can sign him during the "sign your own FA's" phase, or will he be dead set on going the FA route no matter what?  Right now, he won't even discuss an extension with me.

The good news is, he will be a type A player, but I was just curious.  Right now it appears like I'll have no shot at resigning him, but I didn't know if that would change at the beginning of next season.  Thanks.

I have seen a player change his mind after roll over.  The player I have seen do it (same player twice, actually) was ages 32 and 34 when he did it, and both times he lost a point in OVR over the course of the season after which he changed his mind, which may or may not have mattered.

I'm guessing the decline had an effect.  He realized (through programming logic, of course) that he couldn't demand as much in free agency, so he decided to give you a chance.

I am thinking if he won't re-sign in ST that he won't re-sign period.  He may change his mind after rollover though...

I saw this once, too.  Pleasant surprise.

If he loses overall ratings points during the season (such as from an injury), check again - he many change his mind.

He's only 28, but he's right on that line where he won't be able to play SS much longer, requiring that move to 3rd or somewhere else.  He has dropped two points on his overall, from 91-89 over the last 2 years and he lost a point on his range & a couple off his power.  He had some minor injuries, but ones that made a 15 day DL trip needed, which is probably why he dropped those points.  His other offensive #'s have all stayed consistent.  Makeup of 88 & patience of  48.  I'm assuming I'm looking at those draft picks, which wouldn't be all bad.

I have a guy, Steve Guerrero, who was willing to sign a contract all season.  I didn't, and then in the next preseason, he didn't want to sign with me in the resign free agent period.  Luckily, I got him back in regular free agency

I have never had a guy not sign long term after year 2 of arbitration.

I'm bumping this for personal relevance (I've got three offseasons gearing up).

This what I've done instead of raising the per year value.  I've offered an extra year to the deal and that has usually worked.  Not always, but I've had pretty good luck doing that.

That worked for me this morning, but not with the player who originally inspired this post. Both are closers, but the guy who re-signed with an extra year has a 49 patience vs. 38 patience for the guy who needed additional inducement. Not sure if that's the reason for the difference, though.
