ncih 52 mil draft XXX commentary Topic

Here's what I think I was thinking:

Hakeem Olajuwon:
I've been wanting for a long time to try a concept team high in steals and blocks - and hopefully not fatally high in stats to avoid but really not counting much on competing.  Olajuwon was the obvious place to start since he gives me both - although the right seasons also bring high PFs and TOs, which is probably what's made him a reach in the first round these days.

Dikembe Mutombo:  Creb% of 40, plus a lot of blocks and 45 Efg%.  Not the only direction I could have gone high in the second round, but he definitely wouldn't have made it to me in the third.  With these first two picks I have most of the blocks I'm looking for and the foundation of a decent rebounding team.

Terry Porter:  I was hoping Pippen would be available here, but felonius was thinking what I was thinking and so he wasn't.  I had been figuring on Cheeks as the likely PG for this squad, but didn't want him this high and none of my projected fallbacks for Pippen made sense here either.  Porter's 90-91 season is a legit third round option, and still gives me a respectable 2 spg along with way more 3s than I thought I would have at this position.

Alvin Robertson:  Along with Hakeem, this guy was a must for the experiment.  High fouls and turnovers, but an insane 4.2 st% to go with decent rebounds and assists at the SG position.  Alvin is nearly sim poison at this point, but I hadda have him.

Rudy Tomjanovich:  I was hoping Gerald Wallace might fall to me here (ahem, felonius, ya big gorilla), and had to back off a couple other (still undrafted) options since they didn't help me close the usage gap.  Rudy doesn't add much to my experiment other than - hopefully - helping the other pieces to mesh.  He rebounds respectably well for a true SF, and scores quite a bit and at an efficient clip.

Looking to the bench, Jon Barry is my third guard, playing a bit of defense and chucking from long range at a nice percentage.  Andrew Bynum grabs rebounds and doesn't miss much when he finds himself standing under the basket with the ball in his hands.  Between them, they give me a few more steals and blocks, also.

I don't expect this crew to contend and will feel lucky if they squeak into the playoffs.  Far fewer 3s than I'm used to rolling with, and light on both usage and FTAs compared to established winning strategies.  They might lead the lead in both steals and PFs.  I know what I'm buying, though, and just hope to enjoy watching some lively box scores pop up.

I think 'less than usual 3s' is a relative term in today's new sim - I got about 1200 attempts from this 7 so we'll see - as for fg%? they're not one of 98's squads but everybody that matters is about 52% efg except for Russell but he's got next to no usage so....?

you've also got what in real life would be a heck of a defensive squad (give or take Rudy T) - maybe a little light in the usage loafers?
Definitely light in the usage loafers - otherwise I wouldn't have settled for the gallant and underrated Rudy T.  No uptempo for me on this journey.

some random thoughts

sappy has 4 guards and David Lee

did someone forget to tell ncih that Sir Charles cant play SF anymore?

I think macphisto could have had a nice Bucks themed squad if he'd taken the longer view and not just tried to recreate the 09-10 squad but he's a braver man than I

banditone has 4 guards and Mel Daniels - second team like this, did someone change the way the engine works and forget to tell me?

tricky had a nice squad through the first 4 picks and then...? not sure - needs some offensive rebounding maybe?

more later when I get back from PT

70-71 Kareem Abdul-Jabbar -  Had hard time deciding between this season and his 75-76 season but usage at 28% with 57.8 eFG.  Plus he gets to the line and has 13/22 reb%

05-06 Chauncy Billiups - He does it all, except rebounding.  Gets to the line, shoots threes and has 31.7 assist % all with low TO and FLs.

83-84 Bill Laimbeer - Good rebounder with low TO and FLs plus 18.2% usage with 53% eFG doesn't hurt

08-09 Danny Granger - Firepower!  29.7% usage at 51.8% eFG.  Gets to the line 404 FTAs at 2400 mins.

08-09 Mike Miller - 20% dreb and 18.4% assist at the SG.  Plus very low TO and FLs

75-76 John Drew - More firepower! And rebounding too!  28.4% usage with a 52% eFG.  11.9/16.5 reb% and gets to the line 656 FTAs at 2351 mins.  But a little high on TO and FLs, hence the pick of....

09-10 Joakim Noah - Had other guys in mind but with the pick of John Drew need a lower TO and FL guy.  2.9 TO48 and 4.9 TO48  but with 12.2/26.1 reb%.  Plus 17% usage with an eFG at 50%

Chuck's still 99% at SF.

That's not a turrible situation.

Hopefully, uva will give us some evals.

now sappy has David Lee, Danny Fortson and 5 guards, what am I missing?

apparently 98average thinks efg is important, i believe he's right -

I'd really like to see Gerald Wallace and Scottie play perimeter defense with Russell and Robinson behind them - it would be a thing of terrible beauty

mikee1 has a solid squad, so do jakotay and as per usual uva (2 in fact - although I kind of like his second one better than the first) - one of my teams is pretty decent, just not sure which one

take it away uva

I'm on vacation now, but will try to get something up soon.

Round 1 reach:  Troy Murphy.  I know it's a $52 mil league, but he's a low scorer as first rounders go and the fact that his signature season is now only 90% at SF removes a key factor that ever made him a first round consideration.

Round 1 steal:  Arguably Dwyane Wade.  I wouldn't call him a lock to go higher than he did (at 18), but I could argue for taking him over at least 2-3 of the players selected ahead of him.

Round 2 reach:  There are a handful of candidates, but I'll go with Kevin McHale since (like Murphy above) his status as a 100% SF has been revoked, diminishing his recent value as a low 1st / high 2nd round pick.  His ability to score quite a bit with outrageous efficiency without committing a lot of egregious sins still makes him valuable in this sim, but top of the second seems high to me.

Round 2 steal:  I see a tie here between Tracy McGrady and Chauncey Billups (whom I would've taken over the last two PGs taken in the first round).

Here are some evals.  No hurt feelings, as always.

1) captainzen - Wilt Chamberlain, Mookie Blaylock, Ray Allen, Harry Gallatin, Kevin Martin, Connie Hawkins, Tim Legler  Grade: C+

Wilt is Wilt, but everything after that was not so good.  I appreciate the effort to draft high FTP to balance out Wilt, but Gallatin and Martin are probably not draftable players (and Hawkins and Legler are definitely not).  The overall team might be pretty good because Wilt is so much better than everyone else and there are a lot of drafted threes.

  2) sappy - Michael Jordan, Peja Stojakovic, David Lee, Rajon Rondo, Reggie Miller, Danny Fortson, Seadale Threatt  Grade: C+

I’m not sure I like the 4 guard lineup.  Rebounding will be a huge problem, as will defense.

  3) ncih (1) - Charles Barkley, Ben Wallace, Gary Payton, Emeka Okafor, Mike Dunleavy Jr., Greg Anthony, Chris Gatling   Grade: C

Barkley is probably not worth being picked this high now that he’s no longer 100% SF eligible.  Relying on Mike Dunleavy to carry the scoring load in a 52 mil league is a recipe for disaster.

  4) xxevilivexx - LeBron James, Paul Pierce, Deron Williams, Tyson Chandler, Jerome Williams, Kyle Korver, Udonis Haslem  Grade: B

Lebron is pretty clearly the second best player in a 52 mil draft, so getting him at the fourth slot was a good move.  Pierce is not a good complement, since he takes away one of LBJ’s primary advantages (100% SG eligibility).  Chandler and Williams are serviceable, but both were probably picked a round too early.  Korver and Haslem are probably not draftable bench guys.  This team will be pretty good, but could have been great.

  5) macphisto Moses Malone, Andrew Bogut, Brandon Jennings, John Salmons, Carlos Delfino, Ersan Ilyasova, Kurt Thomas  Grade: Incomplete

Ha ha ha.  Very funny.

  6) banditone Kevin Durant, Mel Daniels, Walt Frazier, Maurice Cheeks, Jameer Nelson, Bob Pettit, Jason Collier  Grade: C+

Durant was not worth the high pick, but what I can sympathize with the thrill of taking a whirl with his 09-10 season.  Daniels and Frazier were great bargains.  Cheeks is not a good fit, and Nelson was taken too high; they will be a below-average PG combo, which is not what you want from investing 4th and 5th round picks in a single position.  Pettit is a bad choice, and Jason Collier might be the least productive non-Buck drafted.

  7) uvasooner (1) Chris Paul, Clyde Drexler, Donyell Marshall, Zelmo Beaty, Zach Randolph, David Wesley, Kevin Love

I don't grade my own teams, but I'm pretty satisfied with this one.

I found it interesting that you took Z-Bo (@113) over Al Jefferson (taken @118), comments?

Ha ha ha.  Very funny. "

It was a free team.

I'm gonna get bit by the "you draft em, you start em" rule.  Forgot about that when picking Moon.  I was uncertain about what I wanted from the SF position. I like Moon except for his lack of fta.  Welcome to the big time Jamario!

longtallbrad:

Why no Bobby Jones on your team? 2 blks and 2 stls per game for a season there...
10/19/2010 3:12 PM
Loved Bobby's game, but I needed more scoring and usage by the time I got to the fifth round.
