Stay with an empty Conference or lateral move? Topic

Not necessarily true...
Not likely tho (and even if it is it requires back to back to back good seasons, etc.), they made it harder to go D3 to D1 after it happened in Phelen early.

Like I said earlier: I have no interest in D1.  If I did, I already have a D2 team to use as a stepping stone.  So that's a non-factor in my decision.

My priorities:

1. Have fun
2. Recruit
3. Win games
4. Get to the NT
5. Have fun

Sorry I must have missed your comment on not interested in D1. In that case I find human conferences much more fun than Simmy ones. (my personal opinion)

To avoid the loyalty drop you could allow your seasons to expire and apply for an open job while unemployed.
That's sort of what happened with Hardin-Simmons, but even after a 35 season lapse, I came back with a B loyalty.  That disappeared after a couple of active seasons, so maybe it doesn't take that long unless your account is inactive.  But it's not true that allowing your account to lapse will side step the loyalty hit.

Right now I think my favorite choices are either to stay put or see if I can move up to another D2 team.  I'm probably 60/40 on staying put, thanks to the advice here.

It use to side step it but I believe that was addressed at some point a while back when they opened the two newest worlds.

I am in three of the most competitive DIII conferences (Naismith CAC, Wooden Upstate, and Knight SoCal). I love the challenge of competing against good coaches in active conferences. Each of my three conferences has coaches that pass through. I guess some departing coaches get frustrated keeping up. Despite the struggle to compete, I like the challenge. Back in the freehd days, I would sign up for random teams in mostly empty conferences. It was tough for me to stay focused. I would probably recommend going for something in the middle. Find a conference with a few strong teams and a few random humans. I think Rose-Hulman's conference or Piedmont's conference probably have some openings in Naismith.

Rose-Hulman (barjaz) is in Midwest. Piedmont (ARomano) is in USA South. Also, check out Upstate with bunkerbuster and gasparre.

Midwest has a couple, yes.  Last night, Rose-Hulman and Monmouth, both from the Midwest Conf, played in the D3 Title game.  It looks like a strong conference, though for some reason their Conf RPI is ranked #28 while my ghost-town ODAC is ranked #25.

I contacted a couple of their coaches and they'd like to have me, but I still need to decide if I want to basically start over and leave Bethany.

Oh, the anguish!

With 5 graduating, Bethany is not going to be extremely competitive next season, especially without any 650+ players returning and only 1 600 player returning.

If you are looking to join a more full conf, give Northwest a look. We usually send 5+ to the NT; this year sent 3 because 3 teams got bubblebursted (2 ended up playing in the PT Championship against each other).

Yeh, I expect next season to be a down one but I'm prepared for that.

Geez - just looked.  Northwest has the #3 D3 conf. prestige on the server, and there's only one team run by Sim!

North Coast Athletic Conference in Naismith has a couple openings. Its a good conference with a several good teams. I have been there starting on my fourth season and we have always had a couple teams make it to post season.

Wilkes is open in the Freedom Conference. They are a B+ prestige school comming off of back-to-back NTs. They have 4 seniors graduating and a solid core of returning players. They are open only because the longtime coach there had to leave due to family issues. This is a rare opportunity because this conference hardly ever has openings. Why? Because everyone has too much fun to leave.

Thanks for all the input, you guys.   I was bracing myself to stay at Bethany and weather a couple more seasons of mediocrity, but yesterday I got a message from Tianyi pointing me to George Fox in the Northwest Conference.  After some serious pondering, I applied for the job and this morning was moved over from Bethany.

As sad as I am to let my "pet" school go (I used to date a girl named Bethany!), I was attracted to this lateral move because GF has a solid roster that hasn't been weakened by any Sim recruiting, it's a full grade higher in prestige and the conference has the #3 RPI on Naismith/D3.   Further, there are only 3 Sim teams in the conference so it's active with human coaches.  I only have 1 Senior so I won't even have to do much recruiting my first season.

My biggest fear was that loyalty would drop to F as zhawks thought.  But apparently when the FAQ says that loyalty adjustments are moderated by relative prestige, it wasn't kidding - or they've tinkered with loyalty adjustments.   Going from a C+ team to a B+ team, my loyalty only dropped to A-.  The school prestige fell from B+ to B.   I can live with that.

The biggest difference I noticed immediately was that my scouting list for OR-WA isn't nearly as large as it was in the WV-OH-PA area.  The schools aren't jammed together quite as tightly so it all evens out, I imagine, but it felt weird to have a scouting list less than half the size of what I put together most years at Bethany.

I expected to feel some remorse doing this (don't tell me I'm too serious about HD), but this is like finding a $10 bill on the sidewalk.  I'm excited about D3 all over again and looking forward to doing some damage in the Northwest :)

There's basketball in the Northwest?

The U. of Oregon's mascot is the Duck.  What's that tell you? :)

You got a problem with the Ducks?
