The Alliterative Draft League - My Teams Topic

Round 13:

Team A:
Bruce Berenyi - SP

I needed another SP for this squad and Berenyi was the best combination of innings and skill available. His 5.5 BB/9 is definitely a red flag, but he has a good K/9 and HR/9 rate, so he'll be fine. The hope here is that Stratton+awesome offense+solid bullpen means that the other 400-500 SP innings are not that important.

Team 1: David Dellucci - OF

Again, there was a run on bats in the picks leading up to me, so I decided to get Dellucci before he could be snatched up by another team. He is by no means perfect, as noted by his mediocre defense and lowly .251 average. But he has 29 homers and 79 walks, which means that for a mid-round pick, I am happy to have him. He will mostly start at first, but he can also be a 4th outfielder in a pinch.

Round 14:

Team 1:
Marty McHale - SP

I really needed another SP here. McHale only has mediocre normalized stats, but his raw stats are good and he's the kind of mistake-free pitcher that I can hopefully get 200+ decent innings from. Another benefit is that I can now move Bill Butland to the bullpen full time, which will fortify what is shaping up to be a pretty good bullpen.

Team A: Dell Darling - C

Since the draft is more than half over and I still don't have a first baseman for this team, I figured I would just acquire a few bats and rotate them in as necessary. Darling will be the first bat. He only has 219 PA, but he's a fantastic hitter. Plus he can spell Alex Avila for the 12-15 games he'll have to miss.

Round 15:

Team A:
Brian Bruney - RP

Team 1: Greg Goossen - 1B

Both of these picks were in the name of quality over quantity. I'll get maybe 40 innings from Bruney, but they will be fantastic ones and with an already fairly deep bullpen, I felt like I was in a position where I could splurge. As long as I draft 4-5 more pitchers and 200-250 more innings, regardless of quality, my staff is pretty well set.

I wanted to take Goossen at this point because 72 players will be taken before it's my turn to draft again. And while there are at least a dozen pretty good relievers with 40-60 IP, there really was only one Greg Goossen left. He'll get a few starts at first, but his main role will be as a pinch hitting "ace" off the bench. 10 home runs in 157 plate appearances and a 175 OPS+ = ace.

Round 16:

Team 1: Scott Schoenweis - RP, Gabe Gross - OF

I made an idiot mistake a few rounds ago. I drafted David Dellucci thinking that I could use his D+/D+ outfield defense to make him a mediocre first baseman. But his default position is DH for that season, meaning playing him at first would be a disaster. Instead, I needed to use his next best season, which has 200 less plate appearances. Luckily Gross was available and he will be the last portion of my three-man 1B platoon. He's a similar player to Dellucci, but will play better defense. I could have done a lot worse this late in the draft.

As for Schoenweis, he is a servicable reliever, who should provide 60-70 solid innings.

Team A: Heinie Heitmueller - OF, Scott Service - RP

I'm scrambling to build a good first base platoon for this team. Heitmueller will be the first part of that. His raw stats are only so-so and his defense is bad, but he normalizes very well. I'm hoping to pair him with 1-2 additional people who play better D.

And Service will definitely be a Service-able (har har) long reliever. My only concern with him is with 84 real life IP and 1.13 IP/G, I may end up not using him as much as I could.

Round 17

Team A:
Mike Maroth - SP, Ham Hyatt - OF

I wanted to get another starter to give me 15-20 starts and I'm glad it's Maroth. Nothing about him pops out, but he normalizes well and throws a relatively mistake-free game. In a league with this shallow a talent pool, I'm happy to have him as my 4th starter. In Hyatt I get a pinch hitting ace for my other team. Since I plan on using a lot of pitchers, it will be good to have someone like Hyatt off the bench to pinch hit.

Team 1: Don Dennis - RP, Mike McNally - IF

Dennis adds more bullpen depth to my staff. I didn't really have any other pressing needs for this team, so I took McNally. He provides excellent defense at third, 2nd, and 1st base. I like that he can replace my two weakest links defensively in late-inning situations. His offense, however, is horrible.

Round 18

Team 1:
Yam Yaryan - C, Glenn Gardner - RP

His name is Yam Yaryan. There isn't much to say about Glenn Gardner other than it doesn't hurt to have extra innings, but Gardner shouldn't expect to see very many meaningful ones.

Team A: Delos Drake - 1B, TJ Tucker - RP

The Drake pick makes me pretty sad. Unless I get a good AAA bat or I switch Ham Hyatt's season to one where he has more at bats--and ruin one of my strengths--I'm looking at giving around 200-250 at bats to a replacement-level player. Yikes. As for Tucker, he will be a servicable long reliever.
2/13/2012 10:56 PM
Round 19

Team A: Larry Lintz - IF, Boof Bonser - SP

Team 1:  Bobby Brown - OF, Bob Babcock

Now we come to the pinch runner portion of the program. Lintz is pretty much useless other than his baserunning, but Brown should get some play at outfield and as a pinch hitter. Bonser and Babcock probably won't throw too man innings, but depth is depth.

Round 20

Team 1:
Robert Ramsay - RP, Bernardo Brito - OF

Team A: Lyman Lamb - UT, Billy Bowers - OF

Now we are at the end. It's doubtful any of these four players will be on the final roster. But both teams have 23 other players who should make both of these teams competitive. I'm very excited to see how both of these teams fare.
2/17/2012 4:36 PM
The draft has concluded and the season is underway. I named Team A The Fighting Mongooses (Google it if you don't get the reference). Team 1 is The Docile Mongooses. Don't let the name fool you, their plan is to lull you into a false sense of security before biting your still-thinking heads off. I'm excited about the prospects of both teams. Let's see how things play out.
