all depends on what recruits he has tried it with - if a recruit is an easy target for you - given your school's prestige and his ranking, should work - especially with some extra effort. IF a recruit is a reach for you, it is a lot harder. If a recruit is in the very top group, it is very very hard or maybe not possible. I suppose one could try taking a top 25 recruit and toss an extra 30 or 40 home visits along with the redshirt. I have not tried that.
If a guy is a stretch for your team, then he like NEEDS to play for you during the first year anyway, right?
I would never expect 4 or 5 star recruit to accept a redshirt ... so while I have recruited them, I have never tried to RS one.
I would only RS someone who is high potential and not able to play based on current talent ... most of the time they will RS.
You do need to pick people to RS who are actually going to RS
