What do I do with this guy? Topic

should've proof read that a little better. Basically, we play in an overwhelmingly strong offense league with only a handful of strong pitchers under the age of 30. I have a strong farm system with 2-3 all-star caliber players just chilling in AA. Thought it was worth the risk of taking a guy like this who could be lights out if I need a strong outing in the playoffs.

Here is a decent comparison: http://whatifsports.com/HBD/Pages/Popups/PlayerProfile.aspx?pid=4630570

It was a new world, but in his 2 years, he has thrown just shy of 200 IP. I used him as a starter...starts about every 9-10 games.

Others are right, this guy is a 50-inning setup pitcher. This is unsolicited advice, but whatever: in a world where pitching is scarce you need to maximize your value from the draft -- not draft for perceived needs -- then you can allocate the necessary resources for pitching because you are producing high end talent in your minors. Drafting this guy with the 8th pick hamstrings you because now you have to replace the talent you could have gotten in the draft through either trade or free agency. Plus, looking at your team stats, I am not certain pitching is your actual need right now: your guys rank 10th in runs allowed despite playing in one of the top three hitters' parks in your world. On the other hand your offense ranks 27th in runs scored despite playing in one of the top three hitters' parks in your world. They don't walk much, they strike out a lot and they slug a meager 400 in a park with +2 factors across the board. And they run into too many outs, with a 72% success rate in stolen bases, far too many CS for a team sporting a 317 OBP. Also your defense could use an upgrade, ranking below average in errors and in plus plays. Like I said, this is unsolicited so feel free to ignore, but I think you are turning over the wrong stones in your search for more wins.

Sorry, I know you mentioned that your team struggled to score runs despite having a good lineup, and I meant to add that I do not think your lineup is as good as you make it seem. Perhaps it is not so bad as your results might indicate, but I see a lot of guys with low splits or low contact or low batting eye or all three. Obviously your SS and CFer are out machines and you need the rest of the lineup to perform optimally, but the remainder of that lineup has too many holed to score a lot of runs.

An update here. Carpenter seems to be able to get 50 innings/ year in the pen, which is serviceable, but definitely not worth a top 10 pick in the draft.

As for my seemingly weak offense - it's currently ranked #2 in the league, despite the fact that I play in the NL. At least it reaffirms that I definitely needed pitching - even if I took the wrong pitcher in the draft.

I had a similar guy (not quite as good with 5 dur and 75 stam,) as an experiment I did everything I could to max his innings at AA by keeping him in a setup role and then inserting him as a SP whenever he was 80+ and was able to squeeze out about 65 IP. My best advice is see if you can find someone that places some type of value in him and make a trade. Otherwise...while I don't use a closer...that might be the best spot.

DUR is a physical rating.  It's impacted by your training budget and the player's makeup, not by their playing time.
I think playing time impacts all ratings.

But no matter. Players with 4 DUR don't make it to 8 DUR.  My training is almost always at 20. Doesn't move them.
