Players are arbitration cases after their 3rd, 4th, and 5th full years of ML service time, period.  It has nothing to do whether they had been on a long-term deal prior to those years or not.   An major league player can't become a free agent until they have 6 years of major league service time, unless you choose to release them.

When, after a 3rd arbitration hearing, the player does not accumulate enough days at the ML level to move beyond that season of service time.
