New Player Help Topic

You all have offered a lot of good insight, so I'm back for more tutelage...

It's a new season (my 3rd playing) and I still find myself at a loss as to what I am doing wrong.
My non-conference schedule turned out much, much worse than it looked to be when I made it last year, so discard that.
What am I doing wrong that I cant seem to win my conference games?

I enjoy the game, but if every season is going to continue to be an exercise in futility, then am I just throwing money away?

Here is a link to my Allen team:

Is my poor C- prestige rating just preventing me from getting anyone good?
Am I just recruiting terrible players out of what's left?
Am I setting gameplans incorrectly?

If you were running my team, what would you be doing differently?
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
It is very frustrating.

Thanks.

Short answer I would say is not enough defense and athleticism. Just something you need to work on when recruiting, and since you run zone don't be afraid to recruit a couple of guys who are strictly athletic defensive players who probably won't touch the ball a lot, they help raise the average on your defense so that players like Beller and Kincannon don't hurt you as much.

The roster, as currently constructed, isn't a NT caliber team.

In a zone, you want both parts to average at least 50 in DEF and ATH. The wing players should be at least 50 in Speed and your post players should probably be 60+ in SB. It doesn't matter how you get there a 60-80-20 (ATH/DEF/SB) is fine paired with a 40-30-90 guy.

You also need to improve your rebounding. In D3, you really need to have 4 solid rebounders. The rebounding formula is pretty simple. It's something like 2 parts REB + 1 part ATH. If you have two guys with a 2*REB + ATH over 200 and 2 more guys near it you should be okay.

I would focus on recruiting better post players first. If you have good defense and can rebound you'll be in great shape.

Scoring is a little trickier but if you have players with 50+ ATH they'll be at least okay at it with ok LP/PER.

Hope that helps.

Prestige doesn't mean much at D3;
Probably, Athleticism & defense are big issues. Look at the top teams in your world and see whether their players have better overall Ath/Dec ratings. You've got to recruit that; not to the exclusion of all else, but the SIM will not be kind if you ignore it.
Not the gameplan, but why the hell are you starting Brown over Clark? Beller is your PG & Clark is your SG. Clark is probably still blue in PER, no? Otherwise, remember your guys still have poor IQs, make sure you are giving 20-25 minutes in both your O & D.

Oh, I just look ed at the Melville game. 15 of 30 from 3 point land should tell you that playing bad defensive guards in a 2-3 and telling them to sag back to help interior defense (-1) was a poor strategy. Otherwise, excepting your non-con scheduling fiasco, your doing fine.

Thanks for the info, all.
I was hoping for more progress after 3 seasons.
I'll try to recruit differently as suggested, but I don't remember many players available to me that fit the criteria listed.

Look for guys that will grow to those numbers, not start there.

Yep Yep.  That's the plan anyway. Unfortunately things aren't going according to plan :)

Did you promise Clarence Brown starts?   I have no earthly idea why else he keeps find his way into your starting lineup.  Clarence definitely has good growth potential, but he can get his minutes off the bench at 1 & 2.  Kincannon is shooting 53% and you don't seem to be distributing the ball to him or giving him minutes.  That makes it look like you're working more to develop Clarence this season, than trying to win this season.  You need to commit to one or the other and accept the consequences.

Since my team is performing badly and based on advise from this thread, I have begun to start/play some younger guys to jumpstart their improvement and increase their WE for the future. Not sure what other choice I have for now since this team is not going anywhere according to responses I have received here. Kincannon has started most games. However im not quite sure how his mediocre LP/PE numbers translate to 50% shooting. As far as Brown, he has potential to become a quality player, but I did have to promise him a start to secure him as I was in a battle with several schools and was low on funds.

Thanks as always for any and all input.

That team isn't great, but it is the best team in your conference.  Quit on the season if you wish.  It's your team.

Not quite sure why you would say that. The stats and iq of the other teams exceed my own. I don't want to 'quit' on the season, but I have been told in this thread by others that my players lack the proper stats. I'd rather find a way to fix what im doing wrong. From the previous comments of others here though, my players dont have enough ath and def.
