rj..I was only going for detectives from books...otherwise Monk is incredible as is Shawn spencer.
regarding, Nero wolfe...red, I totally agree. he is a worthy contender for the top honor.....sometime in 16 I hope to start reading that series..i also have the television series which I have never watched. it is a unique concept...he trades food for holme's cocaine....great great character.

One vote for Chandler's Philip Marlowe.

Greatest detective movie (okay, not a book but someone had to have at least wrote a script):  MURDER BY DEATH.  A comedy classic!

Should not be considered a classic, but I really enjoy author John Sandford's Virgil Flowers series. The most recent book in the series is called Deadline. Flowers is a detective with an obscure law enforcement dept in Minnesota. He's a former college baseball player who wears boots, jeans and concert t-shirts as a uniform. Most of his cases are in rural Minnesota settings. Plenty of humor and action as he interacts with the locals. AKA - That effin' Flowers.

this does sound interesting, and I'll check it out. Never thought books had to be classics to enjoy.
