I think the mistake a lot of people are making is doing a whole lot of individual scouting before all the camps have run. Understandable, something new and shiny, we're all eager to press all the buttons. Moving forward, I think the strategy is going to be 1) FSS states within whatever radius, 2) run camps, see what you get 3) hold off on asst coach until all camps are done and you have a feel for what you already have. Get to level 4 too fast, and you're going to waste a lot of money. No value in knowing level 3 and 4 stuff until after camps run.
I don't think users can make mistakes with the beta. It should be used to learn and enhance. No one should care who the beta NT champ is (unless it's me )
Obviously, as I've said elsewhere, beta is the place to try things and fail. I think at least some of the dissatisfaction is related to people just not figuring out best practices yet. Going one step at a time and having some patience next time around will certainly change how I feel about these levels, and how the letter grades are used.
I will say that all the recruiting practices need to be worthwhile. If the assistant coach scouting is so useless that no one ever uses it, then that's a problem. Same with camps. So I think if the beta reveals that some things are useless, then that's something that will need to be addressed. But I am generally positive on the changes so often.

Tarvolon Keep the suggestions up, I like the way you are seeing things.

I think the letter grades just add noise. The only real way to keep talent spread around is to limit how many players the schools can scout. This does allow for that option given the depth of scouting.... a coach can decide to scout less thoroughly or go very detailed which will limit the number of players he sees.

It seems like some coaches think they can win or do well with level 3 info at D3 and D2 in particular. It may hurt teams that need depth - pres teams need 10-12 solid players. If you swing and miss on a guy because the ratings are not in your favor, it might mean a weaker bench.

I'm warming to the idea but it feels like a lot of work. That may just be a function of me not really wanting to learn a whole new game play when I know the other system so well and enjoy 95% of it. If it feels like too much work, then I'll drop teams. I can't imagine giving it up all together, but we'll see.

I've argued since the developer chats that I think it is odd to say that we are increasing strategy while separating scouting and recruiting budgets. I think this can be a good scouting system that adds much more depth and strategy but a big part to the strategy is deciding how much to scout. Well with an exact amount people will analyze and determine value of scouting actions. Also at least at d1 and d2 you won't have to choose between strategies based on openings because the starting scouting budget is not that very variable based on openings. This means that it is likely that people will start to determine a 'one best way' to scout with the only variable being location/competition. I know if it stays the way it is I will just scout the same way every time and use a formula to determine what the average expected rating a player will end at and then determine which of my top prospects best fits my needs. What does that add? To me, I get the same variables as I do from the current system. The only difference now is I have to run prospects through a different formula based on scouted level that would tell me whether to scout them to a higher level or not. I lose the ability to determine what percentage of my money to save for battles/establishing interest.

The argument I've heard against this when I've previously brought this up is that people would become disenfranchised if the budgets were seperated because they would be likely to spend all the money up front. To me this is a poor argument because there is an easy fix for that if that is needed. It may not be needed because of the addition of free scholarship offers and attention points. But they could also just change how the budget is dished out. Maybe you get 50% of your budget up front, 30% at the start of the first signing period, and 20% at the start of the second signing period.

By combining the budgets, there is an array of interesting decisions that users would have to make. Do I scout these guys to level 4 or do I put that towards winning a battle for another guy? With the absence of prestige meaning much maybe a developing program decides to just scout the top 100 guys within x number of miles to level 2 to find preferences. For the few guys close by that match preferences the user goes all in on those guys without knowing much potential wise and just hopes they can develop. Maybe someone does the opposite and goes scout heavy and tries to find undiscovered stars.

I know this should probably go in the beta forums, but there is too much going on there, and everything seems to be reporting bugs.

So just curious, how do people feel about the letter grades in recruiting so far?

It just seems like a real stretch to me that this is an improvement. A player could be listed as a D for Offensive skills because he low LP, PER, but great BH and PA, and that would make him a great PG. Or guys with a low defensive score because they can't block shots but with potential could be a great defender. It just seems too random. That you can't actually know what a players potential or even current ratings are, until you scout to level 4, and then it's the same thing as the old way just with spending more money to get that info. With the new system, I would never feel comfortable signing players until I see there full numbers and potentials, and that's expensive to do for individual players. Just seems like a waste. I'm already annoyed by it, and I'm having a hard time seeing new players having the patience to figure it out.

What does everyone else think?
imo, i'm here to test a system that probably will be instituted with changes after the test..i'm looking fwd to the challenge..i agree on initial scouting of a player that not everything s/b known..esp. potential..judging potential can only be determined by many contacts/scouting trips letter grades>

I'm not a fan of the letters. It's a personal preference thing for me and I'm not sure what it is exactly. I just prefer numbers. I'm able to remember the exact ATH, SPD and Def of my players but I can't for the life of me remember if they're FT shooting is B-, B or B+. So, not a fan there but I can live with it.

Still hating on the physical/offense/defense thing tho. Worthless.
