Next year though, when 3.0 releases, you can take a shot at least at them, but if they are very good, it's still doubtful that a D2 team would get them. So, you would want to have backup options that are pretty good lined up.

Only if they are 70 miles or less from your campus.
Which I have a few that are listed as close to home.
the close to home basically doesn't matter, but the 70 miles does. in todays/yesterday's version of the game (the one that stops mattering a month), players within 70 miles are more willing to talk to local schools. so a player who might usually talk to an a- school, but not a b+ school, might be willing to talk to you, because they are only 10 miles away. the close to home setting will give you a slight bonus on money you spend on that player - but that only matters if you can talk to them in the first place - and basically it would be unlikely you'd see a battle decided by the close to home preference if you had 100 seasons left in the old version of the game. note, this info stops applying after this season.
