It's not like the ratings are a secret on the very good teams in your world. You can click it and compare the #3 team to your 7-18 teams and, if you're feeling froggy, check the projected 137 team. Doesn't really matter if your team is good or bad. You have access to all the ratings of every team.
very good recommendation - look at good teams. Pay attention to things like

- what offense and defense do they run and what are their IQs
- do they have a long history of success (or does the coach)
- who are their best players - look at both ratings (including IQs) and stats
- how does the coach use the players - who starts - who comes off the bench - who gets lots of minutes and who gets little

I guess my point was that it takes work but you can figure out what is good/bad in HD regardless of your team's success/failure. Everything is there for everyone to see. And you detailed what work is required. It's not quick and easy but it's there.

Thanks everyone for the comments. Super helpful.

I think looking at other teams is a helpful start but I don't think it can really replace what you will learn by doing it with your own team. It's about 1,935 times better and easier with your own team.

A big reason is that you don't know what the other coach is doing with his inputs and settings. You don't know the distribution, fatigue settings (or target minutes), entire depth chart or the reason behind why they're doing it. If it's your own team you can tweak and change things and then see the results of what you did. You know all the inputs and the output.

I know we aren't building rocket ships here but the learning curve is pretty steep so just giving my 2 cents on what I think would work best.

That's disputable. As least the 1,935 times better is. Nothing beats experience but you can easily compare good/mediocre/bad teams and immediately know why each is in each category.

I'll add that I said what you said months ago. Knowing what you need to build a good team isn't that hard to figure out but the veterans will always have an advantage over others because they gameplan better. You can only figure that out with experience. And that's also the reason I don't fully understand the panty-wadding over 3.0. The cream will rise and it will likely be the cream that's got 124 seasons under it's belt.

It's change. Most people don't like change. I get it, I'm not a huge fan of change myself. But it will work out the same way it always does. You'll adapt or you'll move on. It was time for a change. WIS opted for the BIG change, and that's that. I don't like a LOT of the things about 3.0 but I also didn't like potential either. I adapted to potential and I'll adapt to 3.0 as well, eventually. One of the things I DO like about 3.0 is the way it mellowed the costs of scouting for Potential by opening the rest of the world back up to coaches, as that was always the biggest drawback of potential for me, personally.

I'm no longer tied by short distance to the sh*t potential recruits in my local area, randomly, year by year. It also hasn't reverted back to the really old days when I could recruit a guy in Yugoslavia for 3 phone calls and a scholoarship either. And, yes, I know, I wasn't *really* tied to sh*t potential recruits because they were close, but my options for alleviating that problem were fewer and much more cost prohibitive than they currently are. It also doesn't hurt that good or bad recruiting isn't so tied to the random factor of recruit location either.
