I definitely think it's big BS. Haha. No offense gil! I love ya man! But I do just fine with.....
See good players
Sign good players
Win big games
The end.
Sometimes I think far too much analysis goes into things here. There is a ton of things that go into HD and the sets played. Knowing how to manage each set, and what attributes to look for is important. But not to the degree that gil takes ith the amount of outcomes that happen due to the (needed) random factor, all you can do is put yourself in the best position to win. And go with it. You can do 10k different formulas, but when the engine decides to say 'NAH!', you lose. The end.
As far as my players being scorers or passers for my triangle, that's because that's what I would like them to be. Triangle is the offense that is best suited for heavy distro on less players. So with that being said, I want everyone else to be able to feed it to them. Regarding my scorers (in triangle) NOT having good passing ratings, sure I'd love them to. But I was just pointing out that its an area I can sacrifice and get solid output still. Like a 85 SPD, 99 PER, 85 BH, 40 PAS guy. In triangle at D2, I'll take that all day for a triangle scorer. But I'm not a big fan of that guy (as much) with a motion offense. He'll still score but I feel his passing will bring down the overall performance of the offense
i totally get what your saying. i will just say, i'm big on the eye test, not on formulas - i don't use formulas for really anything, although i went through a phase 10 years ago where i tried to do it for recruiting. for a couple months i had a goal to write a bot that plays HD so i wouldn't have to do anything and the starting point was recruiting. come to think of it, its a little messed up how much effort i've put in over the years trying to find a way to stay connected to the game without having to actually do anything... hmmm
anyway, it never for me has been about formulas, its really about trying to understand how the engine works under the hood, and then trying to tailor a strategy to the game. most of the stuff i talk about has nothing to do with algorithms or formulas, its really like 'the engine works like X, so you should do Y'. more of a logic and reasoning based approach, than a formula/stat based approach. i've never scraped data and run any statistical analysis, for example - i always felt that was 'work' and i refused to do it. however, trying to build a concrete, logic based understanding of the flow of the sim engine and how the pieces fit together, that is something i have spent a stupid amount of time on.
you can certainly be successful the way you do things, or a hundred other ways - but i generally don't think its possible to put in the runs of insane dominance without really trying to understand the game itself to build your ability to do team planning - and then doing the team planning work itself. team planning is the #1 factor that differentiates the top tiers of teams. of course, the whole point of the game is to have fun, so whatever floats your boat!!
tl;dr - i am more about low level concepts and reasoning than statistics and formulas!
