Bill James and "Jomboy" on Tatis Jr. Topic

This post is GOLD!!!

TY Steven!

HOWEVER, that does NOT mean that we should deny players the "JOY" of baseball/competition.
Express joy, just don't be a jerk/hot dog and "show up" your opponent.
Have some class.

If you score a TD, act like you've actually done it before, even while expressing your joy!

The problem is we Americans have been reduced, reduced, reduced. The LCD approach to civilization.
We are NOT all the same.
Strive for greatness----not the LCD/dumbed down version of humanity.

Gosh, a couple more posts and I'm going to be convinced Tatis is a war criminal!

Seriously, I think italyprof might be overthinking this just a tad. This thread is about a 21 year old kid, less than a full MLB season under his belt, who swung on a 3-0 pitch and clobbered it for a grand slam, and briefly felt good about it. Bizarrely (to me, at least) everything would have been okay if he waited one more pitch and hit the grand slam on a 3-1 count. Such a fine line between disrespectful punk and class act.

EDIT: Just wanted to add, I give Tatis or any young player more of a pass on "unwarranted exuberance" than a veteran. If 40 year old Albert Pujols, with his team leading by 7 runs, swings on a 3-0 pitch for his 660th home run and as a result is grinning from ear to ear, yeah, that's maybe unseemly.

I just don't see a correlation between letting boxers kill one another and allowing professional athletes to enjoying their success. The whole "act like you've done it before" stands against what most people want when they're watching sports.

So often you here people say "I enjoy watching college sports more than pro because they actually act like they love the game", or "college kids just play cause they love it, and haven't been ruined by the $". Well, once those "kids who play cause they love it" go pro, they're told to "stop having fun", "act like you've done it before", "stop being such a thug".

Sure, there can be a level of respect. One of those is just going "station to station" if you've already got a huge lead, not stretching singles to doubles, not stealing bases, etc. But never have I seen this "you can't swing 3-0 but it's ok to swing 3-1" nonsense.

And hey, if you wanna throw Albert a 3-0 fastball down the plate and he crushes it, that's no ones fault but the pitchers (and I say that as a former pitcher)

Next fans won’t be able to applaud or do the wave. Or have signs.

Everybody hated the no fun league punishments.

I agree on not liking those plays either - but the guy who gets tackled at the 1, or fumbles before scoring, or gets stuck with a 400ft single - they pay the price on the field as well as in the locker room after the game. So as long as it's not MY team screwing up I don't get too upset.

Well yeah but I also can’t respect the professional athletes who handle things like clowns.

always sickening to watch . I’ll take it if the moron is on the other team but it cheapens the sport.

I hear crazystengel's distinctions, and don't want to overdo this, I just wanted to make a point, not about murder and sports celebrations, but about market behavior (increasingly unregulated) and recent changes in sports behavior expectations, which, as laramiebob points out, are consistent with a lot of other elements of our degraded culture (cults of celebrity for instance, etc.).

But, I still think it is a slippery slope to this: (see the 3.28 point and watch the winner):
