The Old Shoe: Monopoly Discussion Thread Topic

I've said it before and I'll say it again.  As commish, I believe my job is to do what's best for the league.  I felt fines were in order for the violations of the rules (and the time and energy I had to expend in order to sort it all out), but I felt it was best not to cripple the owners with these fines.

I understand this whole process is complicated and mistakes could be made, but I believe we all knew that going in.  Ct stated in the rules and I reiterated clearly that no bids could be deleted or altered.  I gave everybody a process for anything that needed clarification.  If you made a bid and had buyer's remorse, I think deanod said it best yesterday when he basically stated, "Think before you bid".  That's the guiding principle.  And I would highly suggest this is something you take to heart, as we'll be bidding on 2001 rookies after the first season.

Yes.  The fine for that is 1 jillion dollars.

I know this may sound a little strange given the last 24 hours or so, but on the eve of the last two teams' units opening up, I'd like to thank everyone for making this relatively pain-free.  This was a ton of work as it was, and if we had had several incidents like this last one, it would have been insane.  So I think it could have been far worse.  I knew I wouldn't be able to spot each and every little thing, so I relied on your guys to bring stuff to my attention if you saw something, and people did.  Except for maybe a few heated moments (we won't name names here), all the discussion I've had and seen has been, at the very least, civil.  I think we've all pretty much done what needed to happen here in order for this league to be run the right way and be fun.

If only you had known beforehand that I was willing to spend my entire budget to sign Tanyon Sturtze

On a different note, how much dough do you guys think will be needed to win this?  I would be real happy if I could bank $60 million each year for 12 years.  That would be $720 million.  Do you guys think that is enough?  Too much or too little?  Any other thoughts?

That's impossible.  You need to spend at least $25M a year to fill out your roster.  There will be $1944M disbursed in wins, $110M in playoff bonuses, and $44M in award + stat bonuses.  That's an average of $87.4M a person.  There's no way that you can maintain an average roster without acquiring any decent FA's.

I think $500M will definitely be enough.

I'm trying to win A-Rod and Bonds here so I can package them for Sturtze.

Banking $60M a year will be tough to impossible. $20M for your keepers plus $5M for FAs to fill out your roster. That's about 85 wins per year, not counting any Cy Youngs/MVPs/All-Stars. Winning that many games without getting any FA talent would be very hard.

what makes you think I would give up Sturtze in that deal?

Wishful thinking, of course.

I could always throw in my supplemental picks.  Tanyon Sturtze will win 1 vs 25.

The master plan!  Can't believe I didn't see it before.

**** me.

Yesterday, when I was outbid for Seattle IF I thought it would be a good idea to wait until umdterp was saddled with SD IF before outbidding him.  Instead, I lost patience and toddleduc ended up winning SD and unleashing a crazed contest of IF musical chairs between myself, stepmom, and the two fans of second rate ACC basketball programs.  **** **** **** **** ****.
