Season 25 National Tournament Sweet 16
Washington & Lee 81 Elizabethtown 77
Generals hold off Blue Jays
In a game of runs, Washington & Lee got the last one and then held off a furious Blue Jay rally to advance to the Elite 8. Alex Hoffman came up big with 20 points and 6 assists and Lee Houston added 12 in the win. Elizabethtown was led by Steven Evans who had a game high 24 points. W&L used their pressure defense to force 17 turnovers to help gain control of the game.
The game got off to an ominous start as the Generals couldn't muster much of a defense falling behind 7-0 early. However, they finally got going with a 7-0 run of their own to tie it and the teams settled in. Washington & Lee broke away midway through the first half after a James Woodson three to go up by five during an 11-1 run finished off by a Hoffman pull up jumper to lead 30-20. The Generals held a 38-30 halftime lead.
After an early second half run by the Blue Jays, Washington & Lee went on a 14-4 run to go up by 14 points. Then Elizabethtown went to work going on a major run taking the lead at 54-52 after a 16-0 tear. Houston hit a three to end the run and start one for the Generals as they ripped off a 12-2 spurt to retake the lead. This time the Generals held on answering every Blue Jay attempt to close the gap for the four point victory.
Adrian 84 Eastern Mennonite 64
Bulldogs dethrone Royals
Eastern Mennonite was willing to try anything to slow down the Adrian juggernaut, starting three centers which worked to keep the rebounding even, but also created more turnovers as the Bulldogs eventually wore down the Royals for the 84-64 victory. Tim Clontz poured in 18 points and Donald Black wrapped up his collegiate career with 13 points on just 3-12 shooting in the loss. Richard Page and Gary Michael each scored 23 points for the Bulldogs.
The first half saw the teams stay fairly even early with Mennonite holding a five point edge when Adrian started to heat up taking that five point deficit and turning it into a three point lead. Adrian then really applied the pressure in going on a 12-4 run to end the half using mostly strong offense to gain the advantage. Page knocked down 6 of his 16 first half points during the late run. Donald Black started well for the Royals with 8 points in the half.
The second half began well for the Royals as they battled back to be down only 3 on Gerald Williams' jumper at 17:24 in the game. From there, the Mennonite defense just couldn't stop the high-powered offense of the Bulldogs as Adrian steadily extended the lead to 23 before finishing off the Royals with the 20 point victory.

Generals upset Bears in battle of Washington's
Washington & Lee withstood a barrage of three pointers in the last minute to hold off Washington (MO) and advance to the final four. The defense came up big again forcing 20 turnovers and the Generals knocked down 11-25 threes to drive the offense. Lee Houston led the Generals with 19 points, Robert Mark provided an inside presence with 14 points. Off the bench the Generals got excellent contributions from James Woodson adding 18 points and Jeremy Jeffrey with 12 points. The Bears were led by Kevin Mason who had a game high 22 points and 14 rebounds and Jeremy Dunmire chipped in 16 points. Starting shooting guard Raymond Johnson was hampered by foul trouble and exited the game at 6:41 remaining in regulation, but his replacement, Peter Eilers, nearly pulled the game out for the Bears hitting 3-5 three-pointers in the last minute.
The first half was all Generals early as Washington & Lee bolted out to a 33-14 lead over the first 10 1/2 minutes behind Houston and James Woodson's threes and a pressure defense that led to turnovers and easy buckets. Washington finally began taking care of the ball and finding holes in the defense finishing the half on a 23-11 run to trim the lead to seven at 44-37.
The second half was a continuation of how the first half ended as the Bears came out strong and burned the General defense in a 10-0 run over the first four minutes. Mark put an end to the scoreless streak with 1-2 free throws and both teams finally settled in and battle back and forth. With the Generals down 2 and Johnson fouling out, Washington & Lee finally got a foothold and built a four point lead. Houston was fouled while shooting a three and only managed to hit 1 of 3, but Woodson picked off a Lester Mishler pass and converted to put the Generals up 7 with 2:31 .
Then it got interesting. With under a minute to play and Washington & Lee still playing a sagging defense, Eilers heated up knocking down 3 of 4 three-pointers, but W&L answered by hitting 8 of 8 free throws. With a three point lead with 4 seconds remaining, Mark went to the line with a chance to ice the game, but inexplicably missed both free throws of the double bonus opening the door for the Bears. Fortunately for Mark and the Generals, Eilers last second heave was no good and W&L had advanced with an impressive win. The Generals will face yet another Iba powerhouse in SUNY Oneonta in the final four. In back to back games Coach whunt1 will have faced the two winningest coaches and programs in the DIII overall and national tournament history in kelby_03 and oldave.

Red Dragons retire Generals
SUNY Oneonta used strong rebounding and excellent three-point shooting and were helped by Washington & Lee going cold at the end of the game to upend the Generals in a thriller. Roger Johnson scored a game high 25 points on 7-10 from long-range and backcourt mate Henry Campbell added 23 points on 5-8 from deep doing most of the Oneonta damage as the Red Dragons hit 12-23 from three point range as a team. The frontcourt provided support as Mark Williams had 16 points and 12 rebounds and David Vance added 8 points and 17 rebounds. Washington & Lee got strong efforts from James Woodson with a team high 15 points off the bench, Donald Allen with 13 points, and Alex Hoffman with 11 points. The Generals forced 23 turnovers but were outrebounded 49-30 by the Red Dragons.
Washington & Lee got off to a good start hitting their first five free throws and took a 10-5 lead before going on a cold spell from 14:28 to 9:18 and losing their lead. Robert Mark got a steal and a lay up at the 9:18 mark to tie the game at 12, but Oneonta had the momentum. After Campbell buried two threes, Johnson scored to put Oneonta up 32-21 with 3:08 to play in the half. A Lee Houston three cut it to six, but the Red Dragons answered quickly to take a 39-27 lead into the intermission.
In the second half, Woodson finally got the Generals going with two steals and lay ups over a one minute span and later nailed a three to trim the deficit to six. After two Oneonta free throws, Joseph Lee buried a three and Derek Maloney got a steal and a bucket to make it a 3 point game with 11:42 to play. A Hoffman steal and lay in cut it to one as the General defense was really heating up. Woodson knocked down a big three at the 7:22 mark to give W&L the lead. The teams then traded the lead seven times as both offenses suddenly got hot. A Mark steal and lay up tied the game at 72 with 3:18 to go.
Then W&L went cold at the wrong time. Campbell got a steal and a lay in, then knocked down a three to give the Red Dragons the lead for the last time with just 1:02 to play. Mark got a tip in to trim it to three with 35 seconds and Williams only managed 1-2 free throws leaving the door open for the Generals, but Lee and Houston missed threes. Vance converted 4-4 free throws over the last 15 seconds to seal the victory and a spot in the National Championship game.
