Ok, thanks for the patience everyone. I have had time to go through the posts. I think it is clear that my original intention was not communicated well and I take the blame for that. I also feel that the way it was interpreted may be objectively more fair anyway. We'll continue the draft (timeslots will restart tomorrrow) using the method that it seems was how people interpreted the rule. If you're interested, I included more detail below.
Unnecessary detail:
What I intended was for all picks to be based on the rank of the nominated players you've selected previously in the draft. The common interpretation seems to have been that it is based on the rank of the nominated player you picked in the previous round and then the order you picked in. In Jtpsops's original example, this was unclear since it only showed 2 rounds, not 3 (where the difference between the two interpretations becomes clear).
Example:
Let's look at myself, redcped, and jfranco as an example since we all took a Collins teammate in R2.
R1:
7. jfranco takes a teammate of 3
15. redcped takes a teammate of 4
18. ozo takes a teammate of 5
R2:
4. jfranco takes a teammate of 6
5. redcped takes a teammate of 6
11. ozo takes a teammate of 6
R3 (intended way):
10. jfranco (still rewarded for his R1 pick)
11. redcped (in middle regardless)
12. ozo (still punished for his R1 pick)
R3 (assumed way):
10. ozo (drafted last among the 3 in previous round)
11. redcped (in middle regardless)
12. jfranco (drafted first among the 3 in previous round)
It's fairly clear that the assumed way is more objectively fair -- otherwise jfranco would be rewarded twice (or, indefinitely if he, I and redcped continue to pick from the same player each round) for a single pick. That's probably too much.
BTW - I apologize for my lack of clarity. My focus has not been on this tournament enough this year. Not to bore you all with the details but I have recently ended a 6 year relationship as well as taken on increasing responsibility at work. It's been a lot to balance this year and at times this has felt more like a chore than a fun hobby as a result. I'll make sure things are more clear and I'm a bit more engaged next year.
