THE ODAC THREAD Topic

At this point I'd say we're looking at multiple PI bids and double digit NT seeds.
NT: Lynchburg, Washington & Lee, Virginia Wesleyan
NT Bubble: Guilford, Eastern Mennonite
PI: Randolph-Macon, Washington & Jefferson, Bethany
PI Bubble: Emory & Henry
I only see one team that I think can only find their way into the postseason by winning the CT: Hampden-Sydney. I think Roanoke and Bridgewater are close to the same position at this point in the year, but with the strong RPIs in this conference, a 7 or 8 game winning streak could certainly bump these teams into the postseason picture. Not likely, but possible.

Postseason prospects:
East
Guilford - Has worked its way into lock status after clinching the East title
Emory & Henry - will likely battle VW in the second round for a chance to solidify bid for PI and keep alive hopes for NT. Should be in PI even with a loss.
Lynchburg - Sliding the wrong direction, but still looks good for a NT bid, could use a strong showing to improve seed.
Eastern Mennonite - Needs win in first round against Bethany and possibly a win over WJ to feel secure. Likely headed to NT.
Bridgewater - Needs a long run against quality competition to have any hope for a PI bid. Likely needs to win the CT to see postseason play.
Hampden-Sydney - Longshot. Needs to win the CT.
West
Washington & Jefferson - Strong finish puts the Presidents in good position to the NT. Likely second round matchup against EM could determine NT hopes, but probably will be in even with a loss to solid RPI EM. A loss to Bethany, should they knock of EM, would put the Presidents squarely on the bubble.
Washington & Lee - Sitting on the wrong side of the bubble right now, but potential second round matchup against Lynchburg could help. One win should be enough to make the NT.
Virginia Wesleyan - No longer on autopilot, the Marlins are a team to be reckoned with. First round win may not be enough. Showdown with EH in the quarterfinals may determine their fate. Not likely to see NT without CT crown.
Randolph-Macon - Needs at least 2 wins to have some hope of PI, but likely needs to make final to truly have a chance. Drawing a red hot Guilford in the second round will help RPI, but may be too much to overcome.
Bethany - Likely needs a run to CT final to have a shot, draw is good enough to improve RPI, but probably not enough to make PI. Dangerous team...watch out hoosier (upset alert!)
Roanoke - Needs CT title to make postseason. Gave Lynchburg fits two days ago. Can they do it again?

ODAC Season 26 Conference Tournament 1st Round
Eastern Mennonite 63
Bethany 47
Royals defense suffocates Bison
Eastern Mennonite used stifling defense holding Bethany to 36% shooting from the field to win their first round matchup. The Royals were led by Robert Shoup with 13 points and Steve Elliott added 11 points in the victory. The Bison were led by Michael Moroney who hit two early threes in what looked like a promising start, but an 11-0 run by Mennonite put them back in front for good.
Randolph-Macon 74
Bridgewater 66
Yellow Jackets survive scare
Randolph-Macon made just enough free throws last night to hang on to defeat Bridgewater. The Yellow Jackets struggled to 51.9% from the foul line, but hit just enough at the right time to pull away late in the game. Sam Agan and Brian Grant led the Yellow Jackets with 17 points apiece and Todd Goodwyn chipped in 14 points and 10 rebounds. Carlos Rogers led the Eagles with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Randolph-Macon used an 8-2 run at the end of the 1st half to take a 7 point halftime lead which it saw evaporate late in the second half as the Eagles tied it with 4 minutes . The Yellow Jackets responded to the challenge and pulled away for the 8 point win.
Virginia Wesleyan 77
Hampden-Sydney 59
Strong shooting helps Marlins pull away
Virginia Wesleyan shot 55% from the field, 61% from beyond the arc, and 82% from the line and steadily pulled away from Hampden-Sydney in the second half. The Tigers played with the Marlins in the first half holding a slight edge at the break led by Robert Williams' 10 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists, and 3 steals off the bench. Virginia Wesleyan just had too much using a balanced attack led by Kenneth Bow's 15 points and a 15-1 run midway through the second half to stretch a one point lead to sixteen and continued pulling away from there.
Lynchburg 80
Roanoke 53
Hornets roll over Maroons
Lynchburg found the balance it was looking for early in the first half using a 16-5 midway through the period to take control of the game and dominate Roanoke. Christopher Godinez led the Hornets with 16 points and James Atkinson and John Gregoire added 15 each in the win. The Hornets used strong free throw shooting and a 34-22 rebounding advantage to steadily pull away from Roanoke. The Maroons were led by Jerry Kline's 15 points and 9 rebounds off the bench. An 11-0 run very early in the second half essentially sealed the game.

Lynchburg 78
Washington & Lee 65
Atkinson leads Hornets over Generals
James Atkinson poured in 22 points on 5-6 three-pointers before fouling out to lead Lynchburg to a quarterfinal victory over Washington & Lee. Paul Dever added 11 points and 10 rebounds as the Hornets overcame foul trouble to hold off the Generals. The Generals were led by Robert Mark with 18 points and 11 rebounds and Robert Stucker's 16 points, but W&L struggled from long range hitting just 2-15 3s. Atkinson scored 7 straight points for the Hornets early in the game to establish a lead that they would not relinquish. The Hornets seemingly were in control of the game with a 10 point lead at the 6:21 mark of the second half, but the Generals trimmed that to 4 with 3:41 . The Hornets used a 9-2 run over the next 2 minutes to seal the victory.
Emory & Henry 63
Virginia Wesleyan 48
Wasps prove too much for Marlins to handle
Emory & Henry used a strong defensive effort and inside play to win easily over Virginia Wesleyan. The game started slowly as the teams felt each other out until Robert Sturgis hit back to back buckets to give the Wasps the lead midway through the first half that it would not give back. Albert Ayotte led the Wasps with 17 points and Randy Perry and Michael Heard added 15 apiece for the victors. David Knecht led the Marlins with 13 points. The Marlins survived Emory & Henry's vaunted "40 minutes of unpleasantness" with only 10 turnovers, but couldn't manage to find the basket being held to just 32.5% from the field. The Wasps used an 11-0 run over the first 7 minutes of the second half to put the Marlins in the cooler.
Guilford 68
Randolph-Macon 53
Quakers eliminate Yellow Jackets
It was a tale of two halves for Guilford as they used an outside attack to take the lead in the 1st half and an inside attack to finish off Randolph-Macon. Allen Gauvin led the Quakers with 15 points and 10 rebounds, 8 offensive, and Matthew Smith and Chuck Bitner contributed 14 and 13 points respectively. The Quakers only had 4 turnovers for the game. Guilford found themselves down 1 when they began pouring on the 3 pointers, hitting 3 3s and converting a 3 point play on its way to a 10 points lead and control of the game. Randolph-Macon was hindered in its comeback attempts early in the second half when Brian Grant when down with a dislocated shoulder. Todd Goodwyn led the Yellow Jackets with 18 points.
Eastern Mennonite 52
Washington & Jefferson 41
Defense leads Royals to quarterfinal win
Eastern Mennonite once again used a tremendous defensive effort holding #1 seed Washington & Jefferson to 35.7 FG% in beating the Presidents to advance to the semifinals. For the second straight year, there will be an all East finals. Robert Stevenson led the Royals with 10 points and Glen Constance helped out with 13 rebounds, but it was timely outside shooting by Steve Elliott and Sidney Heard that proved too much for W&J. In the first half Elliott provided the spark with 2 three-pointers to help the Royals out to an early 10-0 lead. Steven Jeanlouis kept the Presidents close with two buckets before the half to kept the deficit at 6. W&J had chances early in the second half, but couldn't convert their free throws. Heard then hit 2 three-pointers in less than 30 seconds with under four minutes to play to effectively put the game away.

ODAC Season 26 Conference Semifinals
Lynchburg 74
Guilford 48
Hornets' defense surprises even coach
Lynchburg's players took it upon themselves to change up the defense running a man-to-man that they haven't been schooled in to hold Guilford to 41% FG shooting and got a strong offensive effort in shooting 56% to roll into the finals. James Atkinson and Paul Dever both nailed all three of their three-point attempts and combined for 28 points to lead the Hornets into the finals for the second straight year. Matthew Smith paced the Quakers with 11 points.
Lynchburg's offense got off to a great start with an early 10-0 run sparked by Atkinson with 5 of those points. Atkinson finished off the first half with a three to extend the advantage to 20 at 41-21. The second half was much of the same as the Hornets increased their lead to 30 in the first five minutes of the half and cruised to the win.
Eastern Mennonite 58
Emory & Henry 44
Royals rough up Wasps
Eastern Mennonite continued its strong defensive performance by holding Emory & Henry to 41% from the field en route to a 58-44 victory and a spot in the finals setting up an all-chap brothers final for the first time since they joined the ODAC. Glen Constance led the Royals with 12 points and Steve Elliott hit 3 of 6 from three-point range to provide the offense in the low scoring affair. Michael Heard knocked down 12 points off the bench for the Wasps.
Mennonite got off to a quick 9-2 start and then staved off repeated comeback attempts by Emory & Henry to hold a four point halftime edge. The Royals put the game away early in the second half with a 9-0 run the start the half. The Wasps managed to cut the deficit to nine once, but never really mustered a serious challenge against the Royal defense the rest of the way.

ODAC season 26 Conference Final
Lynchburg 73
Eastern Mennonite 70
Hornets repeat as conference tourney champs!
Lynchburg never trailed in the battle of the brothers as the Hornets held off the Royals for a 73-70 win and a second consecutive ODAC title. While the Hornets never trailed, they also never lead by more than six points in a very tight game throughout. John Gregoire lead the Hornets with 15 points including 8-8 FTs and James Atkinson and Paul Dever added 14 points apiece as the Lynchburg torched the nets (relatively against Mennonite's stubborn defense) for 43% shooting from the field. Robert Stevenson scored a game high 16 points and Steve Elliott added 13 points for the Royals. Free throws made a big difference in the game as Lynchburg converted 29-35 to Mennonite's 24-39.
The first half got off to a slow start as Lynchburg held a 6-5 over the first six minutes and only 14-12 at the midway point. The offenses finally came to life for both teams as Lynchburg opened up a brief 6 point edge only to watch the Royal big men dominate the post to tie it with 3 seconds in the half, but Dever nailed the halfcourt shot to keep the Hornets in the lead at the half.
The second half saw Mennonite work back to tie the game over the first 3 minutes. The game then set into an ebb and flow as Lynchburg would pull away slightly only to see Mennonite reel it back in, but the Royals could never quite get over the hump. Free throw shooting over the last ten minutes proved the difference as Lynchburg hit 13-15 while Mennonite managed 10-16. Up two with 30 seconds to go, Gregoire buried two free throws. Mennonite came down the court and missed 3 three-pointers before Elliott finally canned his three to cut it to one with 4 seconds . Gregoire stepped back to the line and calmly hit two more free throws for a three point margin. Robert Shoup's buzzer beater missed and the Hornets had pulled off the repeat.
