Game 85: The Rider bullpen extends Milwaukee's misery; after Charlie Spikes' double in the ninth gives the Riders a 4-3 lead, Elias Sosa allows a single and double to the first two Steamboat batters, tying the score. Darold Knowles enters and retires the first batter he faces, but then gives up a game-winning single to Dick Allen. It's Sosa's sixth blown save of the season.
Game 86: Cincinnati gets a sweep, collecting four of their five hits in the fourth and parlaying them into five runs. The Rider bats are silent once again; the Steamboats' John D'Acquisto improves to 9-2 with the 5-3 win.
Game 87: Pittsburgh batters a trio of Rider pitchers, including Fred Norman, whose ERA jumps above 2.00 as a result of this 20-2 blowout. Pittsburgh gets four RBI from each of their 6, 7 and 8 hitters.
Game 88: The slide continues as Pittsburgh reaches double digits again for a 10-7 win. Milwaukee actually rallies from a 6-1 deficit to tie the game at seven on Bill Madlock's seventh-inning homer, but Rich Gossage has a terrible outing, surrendering three runs in the eighth. Milwaukee puts men at the corners with two down in the ninth but Frank Taveras grounds out to end the threat. Milwaukee has lost five straight and eight of ten, but has lost only one game in the standings.
Game 89: Bill Lee throws 7.1 shutout innings, but the Rider offense struggles, and he leaves with a slim 1-0 lead. Elias Sosa preserves that through the eighth, but Pittsburgh scores twice in the ninth, one on Sosa's wild pitch, and the Riders drop a 2-1 decision.
Game 90: Jon Matlack outpitches Mike Cuellar and the Riders destroy the Pittsburgh bullpen, finally stopping their skid with a 12-5 win. Milwaukee has 20 hits; the first four batters in the lineup have three hits each.
Milwaukee returns to PL competition with a visit from Cleveland.
