Flyers 6....UGH!! Topic

Sounds like he's a tough guy. 2" shorter than Sbisa but about 15 pounds heavier (currently 6' 206lbs)

From his interview I would say not a touch guy.

3rd round JACOB DESERRES goalie. Tied for 1st in WHL with .922 SV%. Ok prospect but we probably have a couple of goalies in our system with the same talent. Don't know too much about him. This might be a reason to like him http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MxfGCXIwLRM Stand up style was rated as 6th best goalie in this years draft. Was a back up who put up better numbers than the starting goalie.

Flyers trade Triston Grant and 7th round pick to Nashville for defenseman Janne Niskala. Niskala is 26 and is an offensive D-man who only has 1 year in North American hockey (AHL). Most likely just a depth move and will play on the Phantoms.

For the 3rd straight year Brent Seabrook's name has been liked to the Flyers in rumors. If we do land him I am sure the package will include JVR along with a roster player like Lupul. But I have a feeling that just like the past 2 years we won't get him.

The cap is $56.7mil.

The Flyers are at $47.3 so that leaves $9.4 to sign Carter, Cote, Thoresen, Eminger, and Jones. Plus they need a 4th line center and get rid of 1 defensman if they want to add another puck mover. Holmgren has his work cut out for him.
6/26/2008 4:04 PM
Unconfirmed but Meltzer is reporting Cote signed. 3 years, 1.7mil. 8.8mil should be more than enough to sign the last 4 guys, question is, does the team as it stands have what it takes to go for the cup? Holmgren does still have his work cut out for him. At least we are retaining a lot of the players that got us were we are, looks like a mass exodus in Pittsburgh. Think we're still one Dman away from taking the division title back.

Still not offical on Cote yet.

Carter is now offical according to TSN.ca 3 years $15mil. So the new number is Flyers $52.3 $4.4mil in cap room. The way I figure it the Flyers have no room to bring in anybody else new unless it is in a trade.

UPDATE 6-29 Eminger signes 1 year contract no idea how much.
6/27/2008 4:19 PM
Flyers website - "The Philadelphia Flyers announced that they have signed 6’2”, 212-pound defenseman Steve Eminger to a one-year contract, according to General Manager Paul Holmgren."

I don't see any numbers other than one year though.

Another minor league deal AHL offensive defensman Tim Ramholt from the Calgary Flames in exchange for AHL winger Kyle Greentree.

Tim Ramholt is a project who hasn't put it together in the AHL yet.

Also Meltzer is reporting that he heard the Flyers will announce the resigning of Cote and Jones some time today. Reading all kinds of crazy numbers for Jones some have him at $1.2mil per for 3 years some have him at $2.7mil per for 2 years. That last number is insane but has shown up in both courierpostonline.com and philly.com.

Gautheir is back on waiver to go back down to the AHL. Don't think it is to buy him out but just to send him back down.

UPDATE- Niskala traded to Tampa for 6th round pick. So basically the Flyers traded Grant + 7th for a 6th.

I don't see 2.7 happening at all

According to the Philadelphia Daily News, Flyers defenseman Jason Smith is not expected to re-sign with the team. Smith is an unrestricted free agent and the paper suggests he will not end up with the Flyers next season.
6/30/2008 5:09 PM
any word about Hatch? I heard he was talking with Holmgren to discuss his knee/retirement.
6/30/2008 5:10 PM
Last I heard there was a scheduled meeting with the Flyers on Friday. Hatch postponed it until he gets a second opinion, I'm guessing thats bad news as far as his knee problems. I've pretty much assumed that talks with Smith would depend on Hatchers decision, think it's getting too late to wait on that at this point.
6/30/2008 5:35 PM
Yeah, no Hatcher would mean Jason Smith would almost have to come back.
6/30/2008 5:41 PM
Smith has been on his way out since they broke off talks in February. As much as I like the cap space we would get if Hatcher retired it would leave our blueline very wimpy.

Update on Niskala trade. The Flyers didn't know when they got him that he would play in Russia (he is signed there) if he didn't play in the NHL this season. So they traded him to Tampa who will sign him to an NHL contract.

Eminger's contract is rumored to be for $1.2mil
6/30/2008 6:07 PM
Don't expect the Flyers to make any signings today because they have no cap room because of way overpaying Jones.

Cote got a 3 year $1.65 total $.550per

Jones got "2 years believed to be close to $5 million" total. philly.com

UPDATE- Holmgren also learned over the weekend that veteran defenseman Derian Hatcher has no interest in retiring, which means his $3.5 million will count against the cap next season unless the Flyers place him on the long-term injury list because of an ailing right knee.

"That's an option." Holmgren said of Hatcher beginning the season on LTI. But I don't want to go into (today's free-agent market) counting on that money."

Also in the same article on courierpostonline.com they say the Flyers have around $2mil on the cap even with Jones's $$$ and they don't have Jones signed just yet. Holmgren also said he will be making some trades to free up cap room.

Another UPDATE- Jones said in a newspaper (His hometown paper) that he only wants to sign a 2 year contract and wants to wait before signing.
