Yeah, well this first season is experimental. I clearly did not spend enough on pitching. Looks like you need to spend between 34 & 40 M on pitching and between like between 38 and 44M on position players. My next team at the moment is 42.5M position players and 37.4M on pitching.
You can win any number of ways and with virtually any team setup... I'm not going to look for now, but a little over a year ago I entered teams spending the lest amount of $ possible on hitting and pitching. Spent somewhere around $8m on hitting and around $9m on pitching if I remember right (I'll bump later for you). In any case, to your point on pitching, the team with the $9m pitching staff won 82 or 83 games.... And, I felt like I could've even improved that performance by changing a couple of my hitters for different hitting/defense types.

It's all about understanding the way the different pieces fit together and how the sim handles those stats.

Except I DO want my starter pinch hit for in the 8th or 9th of a tie game or a game where we are down a run or 2. I just don't want him hit for so early.

In Diamond Mind you can set "pinch hit for" at 5 different levels, so the player can be hit for earlier or later.
You can set pinch hit for 5 different levels here as well under 'manager settings'
No, I mean setting it for each individual player. Here you can only have a team setting.

At the moment my plan is to use the extra money provided to get upgrades on one or both of the cheap pitchers, Adams and Nagle.
.
Much improved from the first team. What I love about this is everyone can build teams their own way. If it was me, I’d make a couple changes, but obviously it’s your team:

1) I’d change 75 North to 73 North. One of my favorites and will perform very well.
2) Honus is great, but there are better $10m seasons in the sim if you want ant to spend that much on a single player (Foxx, Ruth), someone like 79 Templeton is a stud at SS and costs $4m less.
3) The full season of Roger Conner 1894 is one of the best/most used 1B seasons and isn’t that much more than your trio of 1B.
4) Pitching isn’t horrible - I wouldn’t use ERA+ as the main component to draft. #Whip, #oav, #hr9 #erc, #bb/9 are really only stats I look at. The + stats are good for some things, but the # stats do a better job of showing how a player normalizes
79 Templeton only has an OPS+ of 113. I hate guys with no power who also don't walk. You may be right about ERA+. With all of the other problems this sim has I suppose I can't expect it to normalize properly either. 73 North would be an extra million that I don't have. If the normalization is as you say, I guess nobody should EVER use and 20s or 30s pitchers, or any 1968 hitters. Looks like it may be worthwhile to try and get up the extra $ to get the full 1894 Connor. By the way, Connor has only been recognized as being a switch hitter in recent times. In the past he was always listed as just a left handed hitter.
12/23/2022 12:25 PM
By the way, in the old STATS game that the career players game here is based on, instead of waivers you could cash in a player on your roster for ANY PLAYER in the catalog, with a similar 10% surcharge. That would be nice here, instead of only being able to pick up other owners' castoffs.

I know Templeton’s raw stats don’t look amazing, but if you put him in a +2B/3B park he’s an xbh machine. He also gets a ton of + plays with his A+ range.

If you can find a way to get 73 north, he’s worth the cost

Just finally got back from food shopping. Nutley Shop-Rite was a mad house, and the roads are full of cars, AND it started snowing. Anyway, came back to a very nice surprise as we flogged the Yard Dogs this afternoon, 9-0. Patsy Flaherty, after resting for almost a month, went all the way on a shutout. We hammered Cole for 9 hits and 3 walks (4 runs) in 6 innings.

https://www.whatifsports.com/slb/Boxscore.aspx?gid=40527634&pid=1&pbp=0&tf=10

Actually, it was 1-0 through 5 before we started putting it away. We got 3 in the 6th, 3 in the 7th, and 2 in the 8th against a succession of puss slingers. Leach was the hitting star with a HR and 2 singles and 5 RBI. Helms, Flaherty, Murcer and Speaker each had 2 hits.

THREE STARS
1. Patsy Flaherty - complete game shutout
2. Tommy Leach, 3 hits with a HR and 5 RBI
3. Roy Cullenbine - 1 for 2, 2 walks, 2 runs, RBI

Back to .500 at 22-22, 11 games back, and 8 games out of second. Finale of this 3 game series tonight, we face 2022 Dylan Cease (2-3, 4.47). We've got Geoff Zahn (4-4, 4.18) going. Unfortunately I have to now dump Flaherty after this great game that he pitched. I can't afford to wait another 25 days before he is rested.

Okay, thinking about this I switched to a cheaper Wagner season, 1903, where he is actually a better fielder and not so much less of a hitter. He also can play 1B and OF too, with good ratings. The money I saved on SS allowed me to get better starters at 1B and 2B. Not a huge step up at 2B, but definitely a step up, and a big step up at 1B. I was also able to drop the third 1Bman and pick up another cheap pitcher, so I now have 7 guys in the bullpen. Several real high OBP guys now.
