THE ODAC THREAD Topic

Since I'm going to be playing a number of the ODAC teams this season....I wanted to wish you all luck. Yes, I fixed those loose floorboards...I think.
Have a good season all.

Emory & Henry - Season 27 Recruiting Summary
-Clark "Alexander Graham" Bell, PF (Trinity, AL): The 6'7", 204-pound power forward has been falsely rumored to be battling anorexia, a vicious lie that reportedly kept many of the top programs away from him. A juco transfer who's proficient in both our offensive and defensive sets, Bell is the great-great-great grandson of the telephone magnate. And the famous family extends to the present; uncle Mark Bell appeared on two episodes of "Cops", and third cousin, Lark Bell, was named "Most Likely To Sleep With A Teacher" in the 2004 Trinity HS yearbook.
Bell wowed E&H coaches during
summer workouts, benching 225
pounds zero times.
-Jeffrey "Boyz 'N The" Hood, C (Ponca City, OK): Hood's rebounding and defense will both be welcome commodities here in Emory, but his terrible asthma prevents him from playing longer than 19 seconds consecutively. Head trainer Vic Conte is currently petitioning the WCAA to allow Hood to play with an oxygen tank, which may be the only way he'll be able to be an effective cog in our infamous "40 Minutes of Unpleasantness" defense.
If approved, Hood's portable oxygen tank
would make him nearly unstoppable.

Roanoke - Season 27 Recruiting Summary
- "Private" Arthur Mericle, C (Woodstock, Virginia) - Straight out of Massanutten Military Academy comes center Arthur Mericle. He's being brought in to play PF and fortify our interior defense with good shot-blocking skills. He's not too fast and not much of a rebounder but I attribute that to the combat boots.
Private Mericle preparing to check into a HS state playoff game.
-Jesse "Mocha Latte" Delapaz, SF (Suffolk, VA) - Founder of the De La Paz coffee company and inventor of the Afro Espresso, Jesse knocks back four espressos before every game. My advance scouting determined this is the reason for his good stamina but also the reason for his lack of focus on defense. That's ok though because we're bring him in to play PF and score in the paint.
Jesse modeled for this shot on his own coffee invention.

Washington and Jefferson Recruiting Summary--Season 27

The common denominator of the Season 27 Recruiting Class for the Washington and Jefferson Presidents is that no incoming player can guard their own shadow. With a focus on athletic ability and offensive skills, the Presidents will look to outrebound and outscore opponents.

Stephen "The Frenchman" Blocher--pronounced "blow-SHAY" (6'1", 186 lbs. from Clover, SC) takes his French-American roots seriously as he looks to French Fry the Presidents' opponents this season. This speedy point guard will spend the season backing up Charles Cook.

Terry "P--"Shaw (6'3" 184 lbs. Wheeling, WV) bears a striking resemblance to his great great great great great great great great great great grandfather George Bernard Shaw.
Coach jreitz hopes that his new signing is just as talented and that he is able to drive both right and like the point guard's famous ancestor was able to write with both his right and hands. Shaw will wear the red shirt this season.

"My Name is" Earl Phillips (6'6" 203 lbs. Pueblo, CO) is expected to lead the Presidents in turnovers per minute this season. With low ballhandling and passing scores, the power forward
hopes that his high necked shirt and suit of armor won't interfere with his play and that some one of Royal patronage can play for a team called the Presidents.

Virginia Wesleyan
Ralph Cassady
PF|Freshman|6'8"|210 lbs.|(3.06 HS gpa)
Monsignor Edward Pace HSMiami, FL
Analysis:
With over $5000 in recruiting dollars but no scholarships open, Virginia Wesleyan opted to cut a mediocre Sophomore PF with a low work ethic (20) and low ratings in some of the core categories for a Freshmen with a better overall rating and ratings that met or exceeded the cut player's ratings. The biggest drawback with Mr. Cassady is his defense but his offensive skills should make him a valuable contributor in time. With a year as a redshirt to improve his ratings, Mr. Cassady should be a valuable contributor to the team as a Sophomore.
Interesting Facts:
Mr. Cassady is the grandson of the famous Howard "Hopalong" Cassady. Ralph is affectionaly referred to as "Hippityhopalong" because he goes everywhere on his trusty hippity hop.
Ralph also lives next door to actress and fellow Monsignor Edward Pace HS alum Catherine Keener. Rumor have persisted for some time that Hippityhopalong Cassady lost his virginity to the lovely actress. Here's to you Mrs. Keener.

ODAC Season 27 Predictions
East
1. Lynchburg (361) - Returns 10 players from a Final Four team, preseason #1, preseason 3rd team All-American James Atkinson may be the 2nd best SF on the team. NT bound
2. Eastern Mennonite (358) - Junior and center dominated team will play strong defense and rebound well as usual. Stevenson looks to be an All-Conference selection. Can guard play keep up with post play? NT bound.
3. Guilford (353) - Reigning nat'l champs look to reload. Bitner, O'Bannion, and Gauvin hope to return Quakers to NT, loaded with big men should be strong on the boards, but has similar problem as Mennonite...guard play is questionable. Likely NT bound again.
4. Emory & Henry (345) - "40 minutes of pleasantness" may finally be in full effect. Strong guard play and lots of experience (5 Sr, 3 Jr) plus a coach who will get the most out of his team could turn this into an ODAC title contender. Listed at #4 based on numbers and therefore PI nomination, but probably will exceed these predictions and bump someone else from the NT.
5. Hampden-Sydney (308) - Lots of experienced PFs on this team, but only one C who is not ready for the depth of big men in the East. Can the Tigers compete without a quality C? Sr SGs William Todd and William Constantino may hold the key to their success. Not likely to make the postseason. You jumped into the fryer vml13.
6. Bridgewater (293) - Very young team will be a player in the ODAC in 2-3 years, but this will likely be a struggle. Rebounding and FT shooting just don't compare with East opponents and youth in the low post will hold them back. Strong rebounding guards may be an equalizer, but probably not enough. Not a likely postseason contender.
West
1. (tie) Washington & Lee (358) - POY candidate Jeremy Jeffrey should dominate in the post and Robert Stucker will push Lynchburg's SFs for 1st-team honors. whunt has brought more balance to his team by adding SFs which will return his team to the top of the West. NT bound.
1. (tie) Virginia Wesleyan (358) - theniteowl inherits a quality team lead by 5 SR and 4 Jr that is primed for success. Don't be fooled by theniteowl's seemingly innocuous name, he's had lots of success in THE top conference at Franklin. Lots of quality depth, but not huge rebounding (though good at every position). May give whunt a challenge for the title. NT bound.
3. Washington & Jefferson (342) - Banking on defensive ratings not making a huge difference. Has good balance and depth in the middle positions, but will put a large load on C Leon Mitchell to carry the post game which may make him the player of the year. Not much quality depth at PG due to youth, but that shouldn't hinder this team. PI is likely, but could challenge for NT. I see a bubble in the future, may want to finish strong.
4. Roanoke (323) - billa is finally climbing the ladder. This year's version also seems fairly young, but behind a high quality PG Ernest Rudnick, solid PF Jerry Kline, and C Donald Bacher this team can compete on a nightly basis. Not a lot of depth will hinder their chances, but will pull a few upsets along the way. Probably not quite ready for the postseason.
5. Bethany (315) - Dangerous team....next year. 2 Sr and 5 Jr look to provide spark to get back to the top of the West. 3 of those Jrs are at the PF position and all could be key the frontcourt's success, but Nolan Robbins is the key down low. Michael Moroney will carry the backcourt. If Michael Birt can turn in a Dan Abbott-type year, this team may surprise. I don't think he is at that level. Not likely to see the postseason.
6. Randolph-Macon (308) - mjacobs moves over from Sul Ross St. to take over a team that needs a major makeover. 5 Sr return, but there is precious little depth at either guard position. Will lean heavily on Sam Agan to take care of the ball and provide some firepower from the outside. Not likely to see the postseason.
CT: Lynchburg
COY: dalter, Emory & Henry
POY: James Atkinson, Lynchburg
NT: Lynchburg, Washington & Lee, Eastern Mennonite, Virginia Wesleyan, Guilford
PI: Emory & Henry, Washington & Jefferson

Lynchburg Season 27 Recruiting Recap
Jeffrey "Mama's Boy" Ornelas (6'0" 179 lbs, Brookville HS, Lynchburg, VA) - This local kid has decided to continue sleeping in his Jeff Gordon racecar bed down the hallway from his "madre" instead of staying in the athlete's dorm. His mother has become the official chef of the team every Sunday night feeding authentic Mexican food to the players. Practices are now cancelled every Monday.
Jeffrey is only an adequate defender, but in the zone it shouldn't make a great difference. He's actually one of the better defenders on the team already. He has good point guard skills, speed, and shooting ability. He will likely not see a lot of PT this year, but will be the primary backup next year behind James Hutton.
Arnold "Hee" Hawley (6'6" 203 lbs, William H. Taft HS, Bronx, NY) - Also answers to "The Governator," his lisp throws off both opponents, the media, and the coaching staff. We are convinced either his first name is Awnold or he is actually related to Ed Harley....of Harley Davidson (Fletch Lives fans out there?).
Awnold brings a very balanced game to the Hornets. He does not really shine in any area including foul shooting, but he won't hurt us either. He will be taking a redshirt this year to improve all aspects of his game and could turn into a high quality player by his senior year. He will likely be backing up Paul Dever next year at the SF position.
Arnold Hawley smiles for his Prom picture
