OK, let's chat with our advisors or a second shall we?

The entire league's players have an average overall value is 70.37

Pretty self explanatory huh? 40s are going to get killed. An AVERAGE player has a 70 overall. Getting into digging for diamonds in the rough whose sum of their parts is greater than their whole (which will correct after a practice -i.e. drat picks) is more advanced and beyond the rookie coaches right now.

Now... An elite defenseman will have a DEF of 100 or better, STR 80 or better, and SPD 70 or better.

An elite scorer will have an OFF of 100 or better, SPD 70 or better, and SHOT 70 or better (favor accuracy over power if you have the option).

All skaters need to have STAMINA >70 to stay off the injured list.

Basically, except for OFF and DEF (where you're looking or triple digits), anything over 80 is good for this league.

brian, how do we see if we can cut guys for "free" or whatever?
4/6/2010 2:35 PM
guys like the ones I described about should be signed until they're 36.

they don't grow on trees, so you'll be filling in your roster with imperfect guys. They get two or three year contracts depending on potential, age and attitude.

Goalies: the 20th rated goalie in the league (theoretically, the WORST starting goalie in the league) is a 67 overall.

Now a guy may have an underrated overall which will correct upward after they gain skill through practice or playing time. I you can ind a guy whose sum of his parts is equal to a higher rated overall player, he may be a bargain.

I want to overhaul my apporach.

There also was a comment earlier this thread about not adhering the monetary suggestions regarding cap/total cost.

Any advice would be appreciated...

unload one of your cheapest hacks.

when it says "it will cost X amount of dollars to buy out his contract, click yes, and see if it's deducted form your bank.

If no money comes out of your bank, you're still under newbie protection, and can start from scratch if you want.

every $10M in salary equates to about $233K per game, not prohibitive to swallow. May slow you down upgrading your inrastucture, but won't bankrupt you either.

Gilyard will get picked up before the end of the season, of course. Several of us need to make enough money to pay off contracts to clear cap space and then have just enough to pay him.

It will be interesting to see who gets there first.

Yea thanks for those two. I really needed a goalie and a good stop gap to play on the top two lines. As you can see by the guys i cut my team had a lot of old declining players. i now only have 3 guys over 30 on my team.

I don't know what the keys to success are but one of the keys to failure is impatience.

I waste at least $10,000,000 each season dumping players early because they are not advancing as quickly as I would like.

It would be better to take a beating and wait until their contract expires but it eats at me and I find it tough to wait it out.

so true.

I have 24 players on my roster (skaters + goalies). Only 3 of those 24 are 30 or older. Now I just need to focus on training and hopefully them growing into a good team.

That's been my plan too. But last season I had a decline. Have to wait to see how it plays out this season. I resigned guys that are getting better and had no room for any FAs, so it might be back to the drawing board if it doesn't pan out.

Of the 8 guys I cut, Wylie signed one (at least I believe Wylie is the Bug Squashers) and apparently the other 7 are now in a different league.

I signed a big winger off the WW to a 2-year deal. I wanted to go grab Gilyard but I already have 3 goalies all w/4 year deals.

I have like $11mil, how much money can I spend conservatively?

I only signed that big winger b/c of the posts here about being able to go over what the engine recommends...

In my open league I won my first game 11-0. I was 10-for-14 on the PP, and two of those non-successful ones were one where I took a penalty 18 seconds after the PP started, so it was cut very short, and a 5-minute PP on which I scored twice, so officially I was 2/3 on that PP.
