If I plan on having Rask as my backup next year anyway, I would rather have Rask as backup through playoff run. He has proven himself capable of handling the NHL level. A run through the AHL playoffs is not going to prepare him any better.

As for Fernandez not being the calibre of Hossa, granted, I didn't mean to imply he was, was just presenting an example of a rent-a-player to refute your argument that teams wouldn't necessarily trade anything for him. Desperate teams have made desperate moves before to make a playoff run, there is no reason to believe it won't happen again. I think Chiarelli will at least try to showcase Fernandez as much as makes sense to not mess with the rhythm of the team. He WILL shop him around, and if he receives an interesting offer, he WILL move him. The Western conference is pretty well stacked up, i would imagine a move to the west. My guess would be LA, Nashville, and Minnesota in that order.

the b's ran into a real team last night

The B's ran into a bad third period. The game was pretty even after two. Of course the two B's injuries in the game didn't help (Kobasaw and Nokilienen) plus Ryder being out for a few weeks. Lucic looked back to his old form though.

no excuses!

In his career, he's played 5 games in the NHL. That's hardly "proving himself capable", especially for a deep playoff drive on a team leading the conference. He'd be better served handling the playoff drive in the AHL by playing every day in pressure situations. For a young goalie, PLAYING in the playoffs at any level is going to do more for his development than sitting on the bench through the playoffs.

I never said that rent-a-players don't happen. However, teams don't shell out much for 34-year old backup goalies coming off an injury in the final year of their contract. Honestly, if some team thinks that Manny Fernandez is the one piece that's missing for as playoff drive, then they probably need to re-examine things.

Not an excuse at all, just stating a fact. The Sharks are good. Hopefully there will be a rematch at the end of the year.

I guess we shall see.

I was stunned hearing Joe Thornton being booed and not Claude Lemieux. Are Bruins' fans that dumb?

Actually I believe Lemieux was booed also, just not as noticeable as Joe. Saw alot of Thornton jerseys is the crowd....and not Shawn's

Hmmm, apparently Montreal is shopping Kovalev. How about a 35 yr old right wing with an erratic history for a soon to be 35 year old goalie with an erratic history. I'm not a big fan of in-division trades during the season but with Ryder out for 3 weeks or so.....

NO

I wouldn't trade Shawn Thornton for Kovalev.

I also hear that the B's are interested in getting Tkuchuk from St. Louis, thought I do not think they have a need for Fernandez
2/16/2009 2:30 PM
The B's are in Carolina tonight for Glen Wesley night. That's appropriate, since Wesley was one of the pieces of the trade that is still helping the B's 20+ years later:

Barry Pederson to Vancouver for Cam Neely and a 1st round pick (Glen Wesley)

Wesley was traded to Hartford for 3 1st round picks (Kyle McLaren, Jonathan Aitken, Sergei Samsonov)

McLaren and a 4th round pick were traded to San Jose for Jeff Hackett and Jeff Jillson. Hackett as a free agent, but Jillson was traded to San Jose for Brad Boyes, who later was traded to St. Louis for Dennis Wideman.

Aitken did nothing and eventually was released.

Samsonov was traded to Edmonton for Marty Reasoner, Yan Stastny, and a 2nd round pick. Reasoner as a free agent. Stastny was flipped to St. Louis for a 5th round pick (Dennis Reul), and the 2nd rounder was used to take Milan Lucic.

So, nearly 23 years after trading away Barry Pederson, this trade is still paying dividends in the form of Dennis Wideman and Milan Lucic.
