Sure.

When we developed the original power formula in HBD, Bonds was hitting 73 HR / season. All our data and formulas were based on a time period that is no longer valid in the MLB, so we brought the upper end down. The change we put in place only impacts the upper echelon of HR hitters and only impacts HR. We, and many users, did not like seeing players blast 70,80,90 HR in a season.

What occurs many times after we put out an update is that teams experience normal losing streaks or rough patches and the immediate reaction is that the "update" caused it. We feel that ourselves sometimes. But it's just not the case.

The only change was the chance of a player hitting a HR, so it did not impact OBP other than the HR aspect. And those would be turning into 2B and 3B and 1B.

And then this was my question in response:

So basically, the only thing that should be affected is players who were blasting unrealistic HR totals, thus resulting in a decrease in SLG % for them. What about 20-30 HR hitters? Should we expect an across the board decrease in SLG %

WIS response:

No, the change will only affect the top power hitters in the game. All other players should be unaffected.

And for the record, I'm definitely not one of those guys who sends a ticket to WIS whenever one of my players is slumping. As you can judge from my track record, I've been a successful owner. I'm just noticing some very, very unusual performances from very high quality hitters.

For example, I have a 88/67/69/72/99 player (25 years old), who's been my leadoff hitter for the past 4 seasons, and this year he's hitting .228. I have another player (also 25 years old) with ratings of 43/88/79/83/55 who's had 3 straight .900+ OPS seasons who now has a .689 OPS.

I find this very weird.

Hopefully, you're right. I never seen such dramatic dropoff before in a star player, especially at an age where he should be improving not declining.

One season isn't a trend. Although, and I've said this many times, WifS' updates almost always have unintended effects. But, as I detailed in one of my previous posts, the results are all over the place right now.

Yes, I have players, on every team, that have dramatic drop-off in production for one season. Then they return to "normal"(provided ratings haven't taken a big hit).

Yes, I have players, on every team, that have dramatic drop-off in production for one season. Then they return to "normal"(provided ratings haven't taken a big hit).
That's good to know. However, it seems contradictory to how WIS always strives for "realism." Great hitters in MLB may have a down season, but those down seasons aren't like these. Seems way too random.

You have to keep in mind that the quality of your league may change dramatically between seasons. Some owners simply aren't trying to win in any given year. Some owners just don't "get it". If you change those owners out with owners trying and capable of producing legit BL teams, the stats can change quickly.

Happens all the time.

See: 1998 Frank Thomas, 2005 Jim Thome, 04/06 GayRod (for a less extreme example).

That's in 30 secs off the top of my head...give me a few minutes and I can come up with a bunch more.

Final post on the subject, because I have grown totally bored with it ...

swamp, the light's on but nobody's home, is there? See if this sounds familiar ... You cannot know the impact the change will have. You can GUESS, as you have, but to rail at WIS because your guess appears to have been wrong is just your usual foolishness.

Oryou can wait a few seasons and see what the changes bring, adjusting your team composition accordingly, like an intelligent person.[like swamp's gonna do that, riiiiight] If you know that is far beyond your reach as you seem to acknowledge, it is okay not to even try, but it is still utter foolishness to whine in a 20 page thread about how the change may not work like you guessed it would. Especially before anyone knows what effect the change will ultimately have.

Wis makes an update. Strange things start to happen. We should wait A FEW SEASONS to see if there is a problem? And no one should talk about it until then??
