Game 65: Montreal gets four home runs, including Ken Griffey Jr.'s 20th of the season, as they win at Yankee Stadium 8-5, giving Alex Fernandez his eighth victory. John Wehner has three hits, including his second home run of the season.

Game 66: New York gets revenge in spades at Montreal, scoring seven off Scott Erickson in three innings, putting five more on the board off Rick Aguilera in the fourth, and then pummeling mopup man Mike Remlinger for the remainder of a 25-7 blowout. The Rynomacs get 25 hits but no home runs.

Montreal is off to St. Louis wondering what to do about Erickson.

Game 67: Chuck Finley gives the Spectres yet another spot in the rotation to wonder about.. he exits after two innings, down 6-0 and having surrendered four homers, forcing Mike Remlinger into action for the second straight day. It matters little, as Greg Maddux is nearly unhittable, improving to 10-0 with a complete game shutout. Final score: 10-0.

Game 68: Ken Griffey Jr. hits two home runs and a double, driving home six runs, as the Spectres deal Tom Glavine his first loss of the season, 9-3. Brady Anderson also goes yard off Glavine; he and Griffey Jr. each have 22 homers to lead the team.

Game 69: Alex Fernandez gives up two Blue Storm homers; Andy Ashby is brilliant for eight innings; and Montreal drops the finale, 6-3. The Spectres are 34-35, three games behind New York.

Montreal returns home to face San Diego, who started this dreadful season off by sweeping us.

Game 70: Scott Erickson pitches well (one run in six innings), the bullpen not so much. Scott Sanders has another poor outing, and Robb Nen allows four runs in the ninth (only one earned) as the Conquistadors rally for a 9-7 win.

Game 71: Chuck Finley gets shelled, the Spectres stop scoring after the fourth, and the bullpen fails late again. It all adds up to yet another 9-7 loss.

Game 72: Swept by San Diego again, and in convincing fashion. Mike Remlinger covers the last four-plus innings as the Conquistadors pound out 21 hits in a 15-8 win. Only a five-run ninth by the Spectres keeps the margin in single digits.

Montreal heads to Cincinnati to face the Stingers.

Game 73: The losing never ends when you roll with Montreal. Montreal scores three in the first but Alex Fernandez gives them all back in the bottom half, allowing two home runs. Fernandez later walks the first two batters in a three-run fifth. The Spectres manage only a solo homer by Jayhawk Owens after the first and lose 7-4.

Game 74: It's like a miracle; Scott Erickson lasts SEVEN innings, allows only one run, and Scott Sanders actually has a scoreless relief appearance. Montreal snaps a five-game skid with a 5-1 win. Jay Buhner and Edgardo Alfonzo hit homers for the Spectres.

Game 75: Montreal doesn't score until the eighth, but Chuck Finley keeps the Stingers in check until then. Brady Anderson gets the Spectres on the board with a homer in the eighth, then adds an insurance run with another homer in the ninth. Montreal wins 4-1 and Anderson has 25 longballs this season.

Montreal returns home to face Los Angeles for their last homestand of the first half.

Game 76: Ken Griffey Jr. homers, triples, and drives in four runs to back Dave Burba (5-6), who pitches six strong innings in an 8-2 win. Scott Sanders pitches the final three for his first save.

Game 77: Brady Anderson takes the team home run lead back from Griffey Jr., blasting his 26th and driving in four, as the Spectres take advantage of six walks from LA starter Pat Rapp in a 5-1 victory.

Game 78: Scott Erickson can't keep the momentum rolling, allowing 11 hits and six runs in six innings, as the Looters avoid a sweep with a 7-3 win. LA gets four scoreless innings from their bullpen.

Milwaukee heads to Orange County to finish the first half.
8/21/2008 8:21 AM
Game 79: Montreal outhits the Choppers 12-8 but strands at least two runners in four separate innings, including three in the ninth, as they drop the opener 5-3.

Game 80: Montreal scores three in the first, then shuts it down for the rest of the day. Orange County continues to pile run upon run and ends up with a 13-3 win, with six scoreless innings from their bullpen.

Game 81: Ken Caminiti is a single shy of the cycle as he drives in four runs to key a 6-2 win for the Spectres. Alex Fernandez wins his 10th game and Scott Sanders picks up a save.

Montreal ends the first half with a 39-42 record, seven games behind the streaking Cosmos, who have won seven in a row.

Despite the pathetic record, Montreal boasts four All Stars: P Alex Fernandez, 3B Ken Caminiti, and OFs Brady Anderson and Jay Buhner.

Montreal starts the second half at home, with a visit from San Francisco.

Game 82: Has Scott Erickson turned a corner? He tosses six shutout innings at the powerful 69ers, and the bullpen finishes them off. Montreal scores only once, on an RBI double by much-maligned (and .239 hitting) Carlos Delgado, but it's enough on a day when the stars are aligned for the Spectres.

Game 83: Frisco shows up somewhat more prepared for the second game, evening the series with a 10-2 win. Wilson Alvarez and three 69er relievers combine to strike out 14 Spectres. Montreal pitchers don't walk any batters, but allow 15 hits.

Game 84: Frisco's Shane Reynolds continues his remarkable season with 7.2 two-hit innings, improving to 12-1 on the season, as the 69ers take the finale 8-3. Brady Anderson hits his 28th home run for Montreal.

Interleague sets against Oakland, Baltimore, and Seattle are next.

Game 85: Montreal comes to bat in the first already trailing 2-0, but Dwight Gooden walks three of the first six batters and Carlos Delgado hits a two-run double as the Spectres rally to score five in the frame. Oakland continues to walk Montreal batters, running the total to nine, and Montreal wins 9-3 behind Alex Fernandez.

Game 86: Scott Erickson looks good for four innings, not so good in the fifth. Oakland's Jack McDowell baffles the Spectre hitters and limits them to one extra base hit, a double by Edgardo Alfonzo. Oakland evens the series with a 5-0 shutout.

Game 87: Edgardo Alfonzo and Randy Velarde each take a liking to Camden Yards; they drive in three runs each as the Spectres beat Baltimore 9-4. Chuck Finley gets the win, improving to 8-10 on the season.

Game 88: Scott Erickson throws eight innings against the Aureoles, a season high, and Ken Caminiti drives in four runs as the Spectres beat visiting Baltimore 5-2. Erickson improves to 5-10 on the season.

Game 89: Montreal hits five home runs in the first two innings, including Dave Burba's second of the season, and seven overall as they overwhelm host Seattle, 12-5. Rick Aguilera gets the win in relief.

Game 90: Montreal commits three errors, leading to five unearned runs, and that happens to be the final margin as Seattle evens things with a 9-4 win.

Montreal heads to Wrigley to face the Bootleggers.

Game 91: Montreal has had trouble at Wrigley before, but the opener was ridiculous. Chicago scored seven times in the second off Chuck Finley and then teed off on mopup man Mike Remlinger for the remainder of the game, cruising to a 22-4 win. Remlinger threw 148 pitches.

Game 92: Scott Erickson has a decent outing (six innings, three runs) but Scott Sanders and Robb Nen allow three runs in the eighth and ninth, sending the game to extras. It's Nen's fifth blown save of the season. Randy Velarde leads off the 10th with a single, goes to second on a walk to Willie Greene, and then moves to third on a fly out. With two down, Bryce Florie uncorks a wild pitch, scoring Velarde with the lead run. Eddie Guardado pitches a scoreless bottom half for his first save and the Spectres win 7-6.

Game 93: Montreal scores in each of the first two innings but is befuddled by Donovan Osborne afterwards; Chicago takes the series with a 5-2 win over Dave Burba.

At least the Spectres won a game in this series.. their next trip takes them to San Diego, 6-0 against us this year.
