The one thing I am pretty good at is my genealogy hobby. The primary area of my research has been to document the descendants of one set of my Great Great Great Great Grandparents. I have found about 5000 blood desecendants, plus spouses so far. Essentially l find lost cousins. I have a boat load of stories. For instance I could tell the story, the true story, of the boy who was literally eaten by wolf! You might be surprised how extensive on line family trees are. You are probably in someone's on-line tree, someone you have never met and don't know it, though information on the living is generally hidden from an obvious view.
Every now and then I discover someone new, long since dead who literally was totally unknown by anyone still living, anwhere. For a while, I'm the only person on earth who knows so and so ever was alive until I post it online to share. You know how you read about some scientist who discovers a previously unknown species? I know exactly the thrill they feel, except in my case, it has an actual distant cousin, long dead and totally forgotten.
Ever read a newpaper article about your grandfather from 75 years ago? How about finding in the basement of a county courthouse the actual last will and testment of your GGG Grandfather, with his signature?
You'll find some genealogy people on line who are just name collectors with no real focus. They will have 100,000 names in their tree and claim to trace their ancestry to Charlemagne or a 3rd century Norwegian king. They take large data dumps from someone else and just graft them onto their tree. The amount of bad genealogy data out in cyberspace is huge. Instead, I have a narrow niche, a special area of research all sourced and documented and meaningful, at least to me. It's enough for a 500 page book.
